The new maps are a success.
To quote Frankie:
"Look – we’ve had it for one day and we have no idea if it has any long term appeal – but that’s the point in a way. After one single day, a map came along and made us say, “Wow, that’s cool, charismatic and upends many of our design conventions in an interesting way.” If that’s what we get after one day – what are we going to have a month, three, six months from now? I’ll tell you: Classic user-created maps."
An interesting point is raised there, we have incredible user-created content already being passed around Bungie Online. Can you imagine how incredible the games will be once the Halo Nation gets the time to be REALLY creative?
Foundry has made a lot possible and extended Halo 3's life by more than you might think. However, I wouldn't mind a larger sized version of Foundry just to expand our sandbox and therefore our possibilities. A Foundry type-map which is roughly 'Hang 'Em High' sized would work brilliantly with a large budget and few limits.
It is unlikely that Bungie will do this, though, as they may not be able to justify releasing another 'Sandbox' level.
Nevertheless, some truly memorable moments can evolve from Foundry. I've begun work on a few projects that are shaping up well, if you haven't started work, I urge you to dig deep for a great idea and begin building.
