I myself have wondered for a very long time what drives people to flame, swear, and act immature.

Then I came to the conclusion that they want you to get angry at them. Because somehow, they take joy from people yelling back at them. However, if you ignore them, it's easy to imagine their little faces turning red with frustration that no one cares. That is the code that these idiots operate on and I believe i just broke it. By breaking this code, I realised that they're naturally angry so they want to make other people mad as well, kind of as an outlet for their anger. By ignoring them, we are not bending to their purpose, thus infuriating them even more.

I recommend you try it next time some racist idiot decides to let loose. Just remember, the louder and ruder the get, the angrier your silence is making them. This could prove helpful in averting a brutal flame war one day.

The best way to fight fire? Silence.

Of course. Its in human nature to want to say the bad instead of the good. Thats why more people respond to a spam post then a intelligent discussion.

I'll have to agree here. This being my new account I am making an effort to stay away from flaming/trash talking. I only flammed maybe 10 times on my other one, which I have had for almost two years, but each time I did I found myself actually angry. This supprised me as I'm ussually helpful and keep my calm. Srange how that works.

So I think Jun's a master chef, because he takes off his helmet and your like whoa, I think he's a chef.

So to shorten this up, Jun is master chef.

Well, of course. I've always told people this. If it appears that they want you angry, don't get angry. In fact, never get angry. I try my hardest to stay comfortable, but sometimes I'll get a little pissed. Anyway, these people want attention. What I do when I see someone wanting attention nowadays, is report as spam and not respond. They'll be banned and you won't contribute to their joy. I suggest that anyone else do the same.

People just need to learn to control themselves. I get frustrated and angry at people on these forums all the time, but I avoid spamming and flaming and just close out of the thread. It's ridiculous how much flaming there is on these forums.

It's a good point, but I think another reason people flame is because on the net, you are faceless. If everyone had to post their adress online no one would flame. (Don't ever post your adress online, you might get yourself robbed)

Congratulations, you have found the meaning to the term "Don't feed the trolls." You're only about 3 to 4 years late but it's good that people are beginning to catch onto the idea once again.

QFT. That is why I do not feed the trolls. Treat flamers and spammers the same way. Ignore them and report them. Let the ninjas take care of them. They are chained in some dark room in the lower catacombs of Bungie, so they need something to keep them from getting bored.

Not to sound rude, but the reason I created this thread wasn't due to a realisation how to avoid trolls, but rather my discovery of how they might (possibly) think. It's one thing to know how to deal with them, but it's something completely different to understand what makes them tick.

I can understand that you know how to deal with them, but there are always those that ask the immortal "why?" This thread is simply an informative something -can't think of a name- for those people.

I've been doing that for years. Most don't realize that it is effective. A think another part that helped with b.net was not to allow politics or religion. From past experience on other sites, these "arguments" always turn into flame fests where people "flame" the person and not the topic. This is especially relevant when the average user on b.net is probably between 15-17 and striving to make themselves known.

SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

I agree with you. I encounter quite a few trolls, spammers, jerks, etc, and I believe that they do all of it solely to get a reaction out of people. By ignoring them, you're taking their power away from them. Also, it does not hurt to send them to a ninja, or simply report them via the shiny new report feature as some of posters above me mentioned.

Its just so hard NOT to say something, when you have kids who arent even old enough to purchase this game legally, talking about how much you SUCK because your exp. doesnt match your ranked matches and your social matches and blah blah blah.
"OMG SHUT UP" just always seems to come out, and then as everyone in this thread has pointed out, i feed the trolls and they go crazy. Flaming is hard to ignore but i agree with Ninja its something I def. need to work on. So what if i wear hayabusa, who cares that i have a katana and im only a 36. its still just a game. play for fun

Precisely. It's just a little unfortunate that some people take it so seriously.

It always seemed obvious to me why they do it; for enjoyment. But I never considered that to be particularly important. I dunno, I guess I figured trolls weren't worth my time.

Shh. He am learning.

Yeah, the idea is old, but it's good to see that another one got the concept. Applying that concept can catch you off guard though.

Better just stick to the Report as Spam button. Bumping a thread with more spam is a two-fold bannable offense.

As this is definetly true, Many Popes was referring to Pregame/Postgame Lobby flamming that constantly happens in this game. swaaaaaaying off topic some what.

Now, does anyone have anything else to add?

I think this thread has really served its purpose. If anything, now it is going to just turn into a "vent' thread, everyone just complaining about what someone said to them last night instead of making relivant points like Ninja did in the very first post. Ninjas might as well lock it up

  • 12.16.2007 12:29 PM PDT

Good point. This thread has served it's purpose, and maybe someone reading it managed to glean some valuable information out of it. If that's the case, then the thread has indeed done as expected.

Thanks to any/everyone who replied but now, it is time for this thread to disappear.
