So I'm not sure this is the right thread or what but I was thinking of ways to improve the bungie.net site. I happen to code and know what it would take to do and wouldn't really be that much..Integrate a video player to play downloaded films off user's Xbox 360. You're already able to cue up downloads. So I'm pretty sure all it would take is to make a new database or something for all the downloads to go to so they will be on the server and able to be streamed from there. It would just take ALOT of time to code, AND make the database and upload ALLL those video files..but yeah I think that'd be the awesome to have. Thanks for listening...

That would be like a geevee/hypercam integration, cool but not sure if its worth the trouble.

If you are talking about playing videos from peoples halo 3 file shares, you are out of luck.
The videos aren't saved in a conventional sense. Its more of a reference to "rebuild" what had happened in the game.

The site would have to host an emulation of the game and an emulator of the xbox 360 to run the emulation of the game.
(xbox 360 emulators do not exist)

On top of that the emulation would have to run on a server for hundreds of thousands of people.
The servers would crash mighty quick.

I'll be on my own side.

Yeah, it's tough just getting the videos to be played back without the game engine on the site. Getting a web version of that would be tricky, I think. Add the fact that there would be massive bandwidth costs and the need for a BIG increase in server capacity....the cost outweighs the benefits.

Most likely not going to happen.

I've always thought this too, but then again, how does GeeVee do it? It can obviously be done, and it can obviously be done on a large scale, considering the traffic that GeeVee sees already (and they will pull videos from more than just one game, too). I would be willing to pay a small one-time or monthly fee to have this service available on BNet.

Geevee and others like them take the file share a manually upload it (screen capture it) for a fee.
Its not like you can take a halo 3 video and download it direct to the net. you have to play it in halo 3 theater and capture it onto your computer and upload it to the net.

GeeVee how to

I think more than anything, this is a proprietary issue. Being able to stream videos on site would mean we could upload them to just about any video sharing site. My guess is Bungie and Microsoft made a concerted effort to keep our file sharing limited to the 360 as much as possible.

I think that (based on the frantic way that many people are promoting their creations) more than a few people might be willing to either pay for (or use a sub-site that had ads) in order to use this service.

It seems at least possible that such a business practice (off to the side) might help offset the operational costs of this entire site (as discussed in Sketch's sticky).
Yeah I saw your post in the sticky and I agree with it. I would be willing to pay a fee to be able to get my videos online in a relatively simple fashion without having to go through three different websites (as discussed in the "how-to" in the Halo 3 Forum).

PKF -- I understand how it works. The service can be and has been done completely online without the need for capture equipment in your house. What I (and I think Recon) am/are saying is that it might be cool to have this service available on BNet for a fee. The fee would be to discourage people putting every stupid video they come up with on the site and slowing it down. But, say, I'd pay $10 a month or something to have a 20-slot fileshare of actual videos available online.

I also understand the features and the cost...
What I am saying is it isn't all automated.
People do what we don't want to do or don't have time to do.
It will be a slow process once the million people who want the service all request a digital copy of their videos.

Nice idea, but the files are game data. Not video files. As such they can only run on an xbox 360.

But then if GeeVee can do it...

Essentially, all it would take is the Halo3 Engine over the internet. (and a number of them)

Having a sub-page full of ads for this feature would be a good idea.

I'll be on my own side.

The thing is though, Bungie's costs of operating this site are part of the rest of their expenses developing games, ans since they're independent now, a service like this seems increasingly unlikely.

GeeVee is able to dedicate all their resources to this purpose, and this purpose alone, right? That's probably the main reason why they can do it and Bungie doesn't.

  • 12.18.2007 9:25 AM PDT

Frank O'Connor is a 12-year veteran of the videogame magazine industry and has therefore never worked an honest day in his life.

GeeVee had the idea that many Bungie.net users had in july when this file sharing was announced. Have a few guys with cap cards download videos from other people's file share and record it from theater mode and then shrink the file size and upload it onto the website under your account.

That idea could easily be redone to make a Halo3 youtube but the question is will it ever turn into anything like youtube and we could sell it to Bungie (or google) and that manpower will always have a step in the process, which unlike youtube means your site will always need to pay a guy full time to record all these videos.

Now Bungie doesn't have a version of the game engine that could run on a server, remember it's built to run on a 360. So having to port it to a server isn't worth it. The amount of work by developers engineers, IT leads, Web developers and the testing department plus the amount of time it would take to complete the task doesn't seem justified.

I'll just use a red vs Blue line that best sums it up:

"Admit it, the programming budget hasn't been the same since you left microsoft" Without the huge cashflows of microsoft paying the server bills, well it's not going to happen. And even with it.......still not going to happen.

I am a network person and can tell you that allowing someone to watch a video off of b.net, will kill the connection speed. B.net is a very popular site with over a million registered users. Already, the site is constantly grabbing info from XBL and 360's. Implementing a streaming video would slow down the bandwidth.

But, I don't exactly know b.net's network set up, so they may be able to support it.

I wonder if setting up another site would be a viable idea then. Like, bungievideos.net, or something like that. Just wondering as I have no programing/ coding knowledge.

Possible. But it would probably be easier just to expand their bandwidth. However, like I said, they may already have the bandwidth to do so, but I will never know as I don't know their network set up.

Live for nothing die for something.

Well this is very unlikly, but never doubt anything....just look what we have now for videos (forge/theater) to make them better. They already have constant information flooding their servers, but it is possibility.
