Subject: We need more moderators.

It has been getting worse lately. I have been seeing more and more people doing -blam!- like what this is doing and practically getting away with it.

I mean, 30 something moderators trying to moderate more then 2 million members? kinda ridiculous if you ask me.

Please, don't take this as a request for me to be a Moderator, I would not be fit for such a duty. but we still need at least another 10 mods and also perhaps more active mods.

It IS as bad as you think and they ARE out to get you.

We don't need more mods, just more responsible and helpful members. You can also use the report as spam button.

Oh, and Hellfire, The reason I made this thread was that the guy had made atleast 15 post's and there was not a single moderator online to ban him. it's like those Pillage spoils Halo 3 threads awhile back, when he started there were no mods on...

All his spam was in the H3 files forum, which is not one of the forums that is monitored that much. Were he to do that in a different forum (H3, Optimatch, or this one, then he would have been called out.

All you can do is report as spam and not participate. While not as quickly as you may like, that feature IS working, and is your best outlet. We don't need more mods IMHO, we need more responsible community members.

I do know how the report spam buttons work. They normally end up in a speedy lock/ban. But, I also used the Mod finder and no mods were online at all.

I know faster is better, but rest assured that the "report as spam" button does start the remorseless juggernaut of banhammerdom rolling and will lead to the eventual crushing triumph of justice.

And the Shadow fell upon the Land, and the World was riven stone from stone. The oceans fled, and the mountains were swallowed up, and the nations were scattered to the eight corners of the World. The moon was blood, and the sun was as ashes. The seas boiled, and the living envied the dead. All was shattered, and all but memory lost, and one memory above all others, of him who brought the Shadow and the Breaking of the World. And him they named Dragon.

The problem really ain't that big. See some spam? Report it and then move away.

I don't really see the big problem here.

I agree. I've suggested before that we get more moderators, but I didn't get a response from Achronos.

there aren't 2 million member only 1 million and which a good part of never psot.

Also there is nowhere near 30 active mods on everyday it is more like 3 - 10.

They do a fine job and most ppl cant even breathe anything wrong on these forums before it is swallowed up.

It all boils down to perception of service in regards to response time.

If someone expects/anticipates/requires that anything unsightly, unpleasant or disturbing is gone (or dealt with) before they click to the next page, there is nothing that I can say or do to dissuade them from that expectation.

But my big question is this.

"What is occurring in this text-based environment that could possibly be such an emergency? What sort of posting or link or statement is so hazardous, so dangerous, such a threat that it every moment it remains, more and more people are at risk of serious harm?"

If someone can show or explain to me what would constitute such a danger to the membership, then perhaps I could understand the desire to "know there is someone here to protect us every moment of every day".

The ninjas aren't super heroes. We're not here to stop muggings, bank robberies or murder. We review and respond to text messages.

If anything we're the guy in the Circus with the wheelbarrow, sawdust and a shovel who comes around after the elephants. If some elephant takes a big dump in the ring, everyone sees it. Everyone knows it's there. Everyone should be wise and self-aware enough to know not to step in it.

It's not going to go away, it's not going to change into a bowl of petunias, but it certainly isn't going to kill anyone. The guy with the shovel will be along sooner or later and it will be gone. Certainly no need to make a fuss and draw attention away from the trapeze act that everyone else is enjoying.

The report feature means that shovel-guy now has a pager. More efficient? Sure. But it doesn't change the nature of the elephant poop. And nothing makes the poop a threat to the people in the tent. Some squeamish (or pre-disposed to complain) guests may wish that it was cleaned up sooner... but they are not in ANY danger if it isn't gone the moment it splats on the ground.

I agree, but I can give you such an example. Just look at this thread. I am very disappointed that I ever viewed it and I think that many other people are, too. It took a while for a moderator to get there, but threads like those cause serious problems.

Seriously. If people want to play in the elephant crap before I get there.... hey, that's their concern. But they cannot complain to me that they now smell bad and can't enjoy the rest of their evening.

Well, that was an unexpected visual picture.

Unfortunately, like in any community, there will be the town idiots as well.

But what miraculous work was performed by a moderator that made everyone "safe again"? What amazing feat did we do that was so different than what members could have done themselves?

The thread gets locked, preventing any further posting. Similarly, any member can choose not to visit the thread and the end result (for them) is exactly the same.

Anyone posting offensive links is eventually banned by a ninja. But long before that, someone posts, "OMG, don't click!". So any and every member who innocently visits that thread has the ability to avoid seeing the offensive content.

If there was an example of a properly handled (by the members) offensive thread, I would love to show it to people as a way to say, "do this people". If someone could find a thread where the OP made a bad thread, one person responded with "guys, don't click, it's pr0n (or a shock site, or a screamer, or a scam)" and then no one else ever replied except to silently click on the "report as spam button" and never visit the thread again... I would LOVE to make something like that a bronzed sticky for everyone to see. It hasn't happened. Yet.

We ninja clean up after the offense has been made. But each and every member is responsible (and has the tools) to protect themselves and their experience here. If someone wants to say that we are not doing our job (or there are not enough of us around) I would ask.... when have the members done what they are supposed to do? How many people still respond to spam? How many still try to dance with trolls? How many still think "in before the lock" is a valid contribution?

Seriously. If people want to play in the elephant crap before I get there.... hey, that's their concern. But they cannot complain to me that they now smell bad and can't enjoy the rest of their evening.

Okay, you win. You always do.

Everything Recon has said so far should be common sense. We all know that replying to a thread brings it back to the top. We all know that replying to spam/troll threads keeps them at the top. Why do people feel compelled to reply "1..2...3...LOCKED!" or other stupid things like that? The report as spam button is amazing and it makes every member a 'lesser-mod' to an extent. If you abuse the power given to you, you'll be justly punished, but it's a great feature which will keep the number of moderators we have adequate.

Do nothing.

There are no set prerequisites and not application form to be a moderator. They are chosen, every now and then, when the need arises. Those who are selected are usually those that have been here a bit and who have been seen doing notable good in the community. Usually.

As far as this topic goes, moderators are not needed. True, there are some holes in the proverbial net, especially those in the early morning local time, but if you absolutely can't survive those times, then don't visit the site those times.

As Recon said, personal responsibility is not the domain of the Moderators, nor anyone else but yourselves.

Yes, and I love it for that reason. Previously, no action would be taken against the person unless the thread was seen, but now that we can report it, I can sit back and relax and just go through the forums as opposed to worrying whether or not the person will be blacklisted or not.

Thank you, Achronos, for this wonderful feature!

Could we use more moderators? Perhaps, but I think they are doing a pretty good job already. Like Recon said, they are not necessarily saving our lives or what not. This is the internet. People will be pricks because they can pretty much hide their identity on the internet. It doesn't matter were you go, you will always find a prick in every site that has a forum or chat. There will never be people that can immediately hid you from these guys. How you deal with them, defines your character. Personally, I just go with the ignore them technique. People who respond to the pricks generally make matters worse.

How about just report the post as spam , don't post in it anymore , and then never think about it anymore ? It works wonders.
But in other words , I'd be up for mod.
