I'm just going to chime in for a moment and respond to the responses related to my elephant poop analogy.

When I used the term "elephant poop" I chose it for a reason. It is a mess, it is large, it is smelly, and it comes from an animal that when it produces it, most people notice. In other words, "elephant poop" are true disruptions.

There is not "elephant poop all over the place". What people are seeing is "all over the place" and want cleaned up are simply peanut shells, popcorn fallout, and candy wrappers. The droppings of the audience as they enjoy the show, not the output of some enormous beast who has decided that it wants to use these forums as its toilet.

"can I has recon?" "I don't like THC" "sign here if ____" and so on are not elephant poop. They are the result of what happens when our members are told "share your thoughts". I am sorry, but look at our demographic and try to tell me (while maintaining a straight face) that you expect well considered manifestos from them. Go on, I am waiting.

No. They can't. What was mistakenly mislabeled "elephant poop all over" is actually what our membership is capable of when left to their own devices. It's not malicious, it's litter. There is a difference between a 50 lb. steaming pile of poop and someone littering. We all can remind people that there are trash receptacles and that it makes sense to use them.... but most people don't even think when they brush their peanut shells onto the floor. Especially at the circus.

More guys with wheelbarrows and shovels are not going to help (much) with the litter. Especially since a guy with a shovel coming up into the stands to remind an audience member that there are trash cans.

That is (in most cases) more disruptive than letting the candy wrapper fall to the floor and picking it up (lock the thread) when we see it.

I'm sorry, it is kind of hard to keep a strait face when we are refer to moderators as Poop shovelers and Forum trolls are Elephant Poop :\

Now that you do go into it with more detail, I can see your angle more clearly. Maybe at the start 10 more moderators would be abit too much but atleast 1 or 2 more active poop shovelers would be nice. Unfortunately there is little everywhere and when litter piles up it basically becomes a 50lb pile of elephant poop.

More mods is not necessarily the answer. Could they then police the site better? Probably yes. But the more people there are with power, the more likely it is that someone will abuse that power. Also, I completely agree with Recon. Everyone has the ability to not click on the thread that says "Look! My cat is playing PS3!!!!!lol!!11!!1!!". I got banned for responding to spam a while back and then challenged it. Naturally I was slapped back to the ground and really straitened out. Its our responsibilities to police this site, not the ninja's. And now that we have that handy dandy report as spam button, we can do our jobs better. You don't want to become a product of your environment. You want your environment to become a product of you. This site can be whatever people want it to be, so its time that we start acting like we deserve that responsibility.

To use another Analogy, these forums are sort of like simcity.

When it was a small community practically no moderation was needed. Then it became a large community and a few Police stations (Moderators) were needed to keep things calm. Now it is a very big community, we were verging on out growing our police coverage and got a Neighborhood watch program (Spam Report) but it only helps so much.

Unfortunately, SimCity doesn't take into account individual resident behaviors, attitudes, and actions. In a realistic community model, you can limit, quite successfully mind you, the "crime" in the city by not bringing in the people that will cause trouble and reducing the benefit of those crimes that do happen.

Spam is used to draw attention: period. People don't want to work for fame, so they go for infamy. If members don't acknowledge that it's there, specifically by not responding to them, then all that ill-meant work the poster had done has now accumulated to nothing, absolutely nothing. If someone wants to take action against a thread, use the spam-report; don't waste your time, my time, and the moderator's time by bumping the thread.

SimCity (For the record, I know its capatilised, I have SC4 on my computer) was a loose analogy, but if you want we can go back to elephant poop.

Oh, I wasn't trying to stress the spelling difference, I just try to always italicize proper nouns in my post.

"Elephant poop" was a proper analogy for Foman/RN54(?) to use. I just wanted to convey the subtle, but necessary, differences between SimCity and a real, functioning societal community.

There is a reason I am user ID 1 and my account creation date is before this site came online.

As far as I'm concerned Simcity has always been poop! =)

I agree with Foman's sentiments. More moderators are not really needed. Would/could it help out? Maybe. Finding the right people is always the issue, and that's always been the issue for Tom.

Yea, we all saw what happend when Pezza's account was hacked. We deffinetly wouldn't want that to happen again.

I believe it would help. If you look at the Mod finder you will see that very few are actually active in moderating.
those are
TGP
Yooze
Recon
Ash
Anton
JaF
and to a lesser extent
Achronos
Gods Prophet
Stosh and a few others.
But there are also quite a few that havn't used the forums for quite awhile.

Which is why it makes sense to have 1 or 2 more Mods that are more active.

Exactly. This is the point that I brought up before. However, I've realized that we don't truly need more moderators. If we had a few more, it would help, but we don't need them. The guys who do go on are very efficient for how many there are, and I think that the other guys actually lock threads and check up quite a lot, but aren't as social and don't post as often. The only exceptions I can think of are stosh, Maka, and GJJ.

Just because you don't see the mods working doesn't mean they aren't there. Remember, they are ninjas.

Even still, I don't think it's our place to judge the moderators or their activeness. Tom knows what he's doing, and he'd take care of things if he believed things needed taken care of.

I'm more active than most. The fact of this thread is; most of you don't know how we operate thus you do not know what it takes to keep this place running.

Thus it is silly to pine for new mods when you don't have all the facts. If we want more, we get more.

Also, suggesting people is the ONLY way to ensure they won't be chosen. So lay back on the 'Foman/Zag/Mabian/Twitch 4 mod' stuff.

I don't have to go "public" at all anymore, and I like that option. As so many of you have said, we are called ninjas for a reason...though I'm not being very sneaky with this post.
