So now I'm a beta tester. Let's see where this goes.

Sorry if this is off topic but it must be cool to be a ninja hired by the Almighty Bungie seriously. Everytime I see orange text it makes me so interested in looking at all your comments, theres just something about them that makes so much sense.

They're not really hired because they are not Bungie employees. They are community members that, based on their actions and words, have been selected to hold power over the rest of us.

[Back on topic.]

Yes, more mods wouldn't hurt. No, since the spam button is working we probably aren't going to see any new mods for a while. Yes, there will be another thread about it inside two weeks. No, we probably aren't going to get a response from Achronos due to the face that he has responded to threads of this nature before.

My two cents from the other thread.
Posted by: LordRavenBlack
I find many of the Mods here have an "I'm here to punish you, not to help you" attitude. Mods that are more helpful, when asked a question, would be nice. People that keep the masses informed would be nice. I'm not sure if it's more mods that b.net needs or just more active mods that b.net needs.

I know mods don't have to be active to do there job, but it makes for a better forum in the long run. People seeing active mods on a daily basis discourages bad behaviour. What's the point of creating a 'troll thread' if it's only going to last 2 mins? Or what’s the point of trying to flame someone, if you know a Mod is going to come ban you before you even get a response. This also creates closer community, if people are able to regularly interact with the Mods.

Mods should be friendly and helpful. You don't need to be all "I'm a big bad ninja" all the time. Save that stuff for when someone gets outta hand.

This post is entirely opinion, take it as you will.

All of the moderators that post in the forums are helpful.

Last night Recon was being fairly active in the Halo 3 forums of all places :\

I'm glad we have the moderators we do, however few of them there are. Whenever I visit these forums, they are always peaceful and kept in check (usually.. :D). There are always going to be idiots, but rest assured that they will be dealt with. Also, don't forget that you have a say in the matter now with the "report as spam" button.

I know faster is better, but rest assured that the "report as spam" button does start the remorseless juggernaut of banhammerdom rolling and will lead to the eventual crushing triumph of justice.

I don't agree. The moderators are friendly and do answer questions (except Pez, who's answer to everything is "Shut up", but people love him anyway).

We do have to step in, and pretend to be "big and bad" when trying to steer a derailed thread back on topic. When people start up a new fad or meme, we need to make a stern, public message in order to stomp it out. It's unfortunate that this is our public face, but that's just a necessary part of it all. We need to inform people that their crap won't be tolerated. If the moderator's were overly lenient and push-overs, I have no doubt you'd be complaining about a whole new problem.

That said, I know I spend probably half my time on here just answering my PMs and helping people with their queries about the site. However, does anyone see this? Not really, only two people have access to it.

I think most of what you expect is happening, it's just not very apparent. Afterall, we're "Ninjas"... apparently.

I agree, but I can give you such an example. Just look at this thread. I am very disappointed that I ever viewed it and I think that many other people are, too. It took a while for a moderator to get there, but threads like those cause serious problems.

But what miraculous work was performed by a moderator that made everyone "safe again"? What amazing feat did we do that was so different than what members could have done themselves?

The thread gets locked, preventing any further posting. Similarly, any member can choose not to visit the thread and the end result (for them) is exactly the same.

Anyone posting offensive links is eventually banned by a ninja. But long before that, someone posts, "OMG, don't click!". So any and every member who innocently visits that thread has the ability to avoid seeing the offensive content.

If there was an example of a properly handled (by the members) offensive thread, I would love to show it to people as a way to say, "do this people". If someone could find a thread where the OP made a bad thread, one person responded with "guys, don't click, it's pr0n (or a shock site, or a screamer, or a scam)" and then no one else ever replied except to silently click on the "report as spam button" and never visit the thread again... I would LOVE to make something like that a bronzed sticky for everyone to see. It hasn't happened. Yet.

We ninja clean up after the offense has been made. But each and every member is responsible (and has the tools) to protect themselves and their experience here. If someone wants to say that we are not doing our job (or there are not enough of us around) I would ask.... when have the members done what they are supposed to do? How many people still respond to spam? How many still try to dance with trolls? How many still think "in before the lock" is a valid contribution?

Seriously. If people want to play in the elephant crap before I get there.... hey, that's their concern. But they cannot complain to me that they now smell bad and can't enjoy the rest of their evening.

Want an example?
Here's one:
Four (at least) of us said "Don't click!"

Yeah , but right now .. like right now 3:46pm
There seems to be a lot of spam ..
I wish there was a couple of new mods that could come here every other day =/
I really do ..
And the spam button doesn't really seem to do much ..
especially when there aren't any mods online . =/

But in the end I guess it works out .

I find this issue to be one that divides the Bungie community. On one hand, I read a lot of posts complaining how strict mods are in B.net. However, other members complain about a lack of mods. Maybe we have the right number of mods. Some members may want stricter forums and others want more casual forums. The status quo is open to critism from both sides; however, I think the mods are doing a good job.

New mods? Yes, but only if I get to be their superior. If you thought I was on a power trip before, "you ain't seen-a-no no no nothin' yet!"

I think most of what you expect is happening, it's just not very apparent. Afterall, we're "Ninjas"... apparently.

I'm posting from personal experience. The majority of the time I have messaged Mods with questions, I have not received answers, or anything for that matter. In a recent example, I had a problem with an account being banned on my PC while I was at work, I was subsequently banned as well when I came home and logged in. I didn't understand what had happened. It appeared that I was banned by someone who was not even a Mod here at B.net. I asked for an explanation from two Mods that were online at the time. I received no answer or explanation at all. I was ignored. I had to wait out the ban, post on the forums and get the answer I wanted from regular members.

Regarding the second part of your post. I agree that Mods need to step in and thwamp the bad guys when necessary. I was just saying that Mods should be friendly and helpful, unless there forced to go into big bad ninja mode due to someone’s disruptive behaviour. I just find some to always be in big bad ninja mode, and it just doesn’t come across as welcoming.

I'm not, in anyway, saying that the Mods here aren’t doing a good job. With the number of people that come here and the insane amount of spam and flames that pass through b.net in one day, It's quite amazing how clean you guys keep things. Some of you crack me up with each and every post. We all appreciate that.

Regardless, trying to find an answer to a question that should be easy can be quite difficult. The forums can get overloaded with junk that could be avoided with a Mods intervention. Small example; When the playlist update was delayed, a mod could have posted a sticky with an explanation. I know people should not have reacted the way they did over the update, but much of it could have been avoided. The sticky would calm most people down, and only needed to be on the forum until the update was ready. (24 Hrs?) It wasn’t a huge problem, It’s just the only example I can think of off hand, but things like this seem to be a trend.

Again, these are opinions take em’ as you will.

Which is true. However, asking them to "help by being a mini-mod/temporary mod/etc" doesn't apply, as that choice isn't theirs to make.

Edit: Looking at the Halo 3 forum, now, it's taken quite a bit of will power not to switch sides and say that more moderators are needed.

I just wanted to let this point of my own perspective in what I think is a good mod or what a good community member is. In order to be good on here you must be able to have the ability to determine what a lying complaint/compliment with an honest complaint/compliment. Not all complaints in the halo3 forum are necessarily Bull made up complaints. It seems that community member stereotypically throw the complaints in one category and call it a day. From what I’ve seen. It’s somewhat difficult for me to see the actual expression of the user creating or responding in a post . It is sometimes hard to determine the user’s mood under the text.

Sometimes you actually have no clue if their serious or not because of the adaptation everyone has made in here to see everything (some what stereotypical) as one expression. The reason I am saying the word “stereotype” a lot is because the fact that a lot of users in here actually tend to use this sort of behavior about certain things.

That is also what should be determined as well. What else could be determined? A lot of things. So many actually that you must understand that the list will go further than I can type this. Basically you must have the ability to judge for your self wisely about what responsible decisions should or must be made.

Oh by the way. Sorry for sort of changing my response to a different discussion. I just felt like saying, I mean typing this. The language on the forums is so different than the words spoken out of your own mouth. I’m always learning something new here everyday.

-Ep!

I was wondering, is it possible to "localize" moderators? For example, appoint someone new to moderate strictly in the Halo 3 Forum, as it is, seemingly by most accounts, the trouble spot here.

You could always take a gander at the Halo 3 Forum, there's plenty of freelancing to be done there. Heck, assuming you click "Lock", putting on a blindfold and selecting a thread at random has a conservative 10% accuracy yield. That's shooting fish in the proverbial barrel, compared to elsewhere.
