I used to be able to play Halo.
Did some upgrades on my system and now I get an error message.
I have tried everything (I think)
Did the update to version 106
Upgraded my Bios
Upgraded all MB and Vid card drivers
tried "pasting strings.dll patch"
tried "pasting binkw32.dll patch"

I even tried putting my system back to the way it was and still I get a message "gathering ecxeption data" as I load the program. Then a message can be sent to Microsoft.

The game does work on an older computer (not well as it is slow). Am at the point where I am considering scrapping this computer because I can not figure this out......Other low end games work on this machine.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Tell us your system spec, and also any other programs which you run at the same time as Halo, like Zonealarm, Teamspeak, X-fire etc.

Wow,
I appreciate the fast response.
I had built this system about a year ago and loaded Halo as well as many other things on it....many more programs than what is on there now. Upgraded to SP2 and was no longer able to play. Then tryied re-doing and bringing everything back to clean SP1 install with only Halo on system......and still no success.
I hope this is the type of info you are looking for:

Pardon my obviousness, but have you tried re-installing the game??

This might be drastic, but i would recomend a reformat. That should clear up any software problems

Lol perhaps a little bit too much system info there, if there is such a thing as too much info. Anyways basically as your options, there's re-installation, upgrading/re-installing drivers... fiddling with graphics options, defragging or the ultimate solve-all, re-formatting. You might want to put your RAM in DIMM 1 not that it should make much difference. The only programs I know to cause exception errors are zonealarm (sometimes) and x-fire.

If you have a manufacturer's application recovery disk (if you got it from a company and didn't build it yourself), insert it into the cd drive. Instead of doing a hardcore reformat, as I like to call, It removes everything but the OS and then reinstalls the software that came with your computer. Back up all of your important files, as you wont ever get them back after the reformat. I did this last night, and man does my computer run fast again. I would suggest the uninstall/reinstall, though.

Before you go through the pain of re-installing or refreshing the OS, you may want to try adding a user profile in windows and installing Halo on the new profile.

I’ve had exactly the same problem you describe with other applications on my XP system and what it turned out to be was that the main user profile was corrupted. The only real way to correct it for me was to add a secondary profile, and then delete the first one. In XP, you can export your icons and re-import them into the new profile. Once I did this, I no longer received the exceptions.

This should be relatively easy for you to test and is far better than a full system refresh.

Thanks to all that replied.
I have gone as far as re-installing my system (not to mention re-installing the game) and have continued to have difficulties.
Nrtheastah,
I will try the new profile suggestion as I had not tried that one yet and it seems simple enough. Will try moving my ram to DIMM 1 as suggested by Skippy TBK.

If there are any other ideas, please post.

I think I have run out of things to try. Maybe a new Motherboard?

Fjd0,

Good luck! By the way, my problems started immediately after loading SP2 on my system as you had also mentioned doing before you saw rhe first problem.

Heyyo,

I don't think you have to go as far as a new motherboard... the game doesn't seem to like your setup, so it's not your fault, it's the fault of the creators of HaloPC for lack of your hardware support...

Ok, install Service Pack 1, but leave off Service Pack 2 if you can. That thing sucks anyways, causes more problems than solving them...

also, you can try running the game in compatibility mode for like, windows 98/me, or 2000. That helped me on Counter-Strike back in the day when windows xp was first released and sucked on older games, so ya never know....

if that fails? contact M$ tech support, and tell them what's up, if you're lucky, they might add support for it in the next patch, or somehow fix whatever's causing the error...
