Subject: Awarding custom avatars to good community members.

Old school Bungie, born and raised,
In the Septagon is where I spend most of my days.
Relaxin', maxin', posting all cool,
Talking about Halo, life and some school.
Got in one little argument, and the mods got scared,
they said "You're gonna get banned and your member title'll be bare!"

I definetly don't think that it should be run solely on an automated system such as the trust system, rather you can be nominated for it my mods & Bungie personel.

Again, that would add more of a load to the work they already have and I'm not sure they would be up to that task.

Well, unlike monitoring screenshots, nominating members wouldn't be demanded of them, and so it might not be as much of a drag. Though I do agree they might not be up to it.

What if they just give out the reward to five people a month? Maybe as a Moderator or Ninja is browsing, they see a poster that they like, write his name down and continue on their way. At the end of the month they would just do a quick check of their post history and trust rating and decide from there. That would keep the work load off the Ninjas, and make sure that only members who really do derserve it get it.

Yeah, it could work. Not wanting to sound flip-floppy, but it's not elitism I'm worried about, but favoritism. There are some concerns that I have with the moderator-choosing idea, though they aren't particularly appropriate public discussion.

I actually kinda agree with this. Rewarding set members/month might be a good idea, but again, how might people react to it? You've all seen the number of people who tried to kill themselves with a cone to mimic the ONE guy who got the Armor of which we do not speak. It would be the same thing all over.

Hmm, I will have to agree with you. Though it is nice to give treats out to the members who are better than the others, it will probably evoke even more spam threads. Seeing as how making Heroic, Legendary, and Mythic members was a risky decision, I don't know how this would go over now.

Now here's a truely unique and good idea! I really like this suggestion.

Seriously?

I don't think there should be any more "special" privelages. The member rating is more than enough. All a custom Avatar will do is promote more elitism and another way to spam.
Achievement Unlocked with astonishing speed!
Wort Wort Wort!

Hahahahaha. (You only would have gotten Fomans post if you have read the forum achievements thread)

Anyways, back on topic. I don't really think this is a good idea. Custom Avatars are used to recognize Ninjas and Bungie people easier. They are above trusted here. Like Panzer said, the member title is enough. Plus, you can make your own custom avatar. Its called your Halo 3 symbol.

You mean people would see that some users were well-mannered and polite community members for a few years and got rewarded so they might try it themselves? You know what; I would love for them to try.

You are right, Nedge, that a healthy portion would, but certainly you must be able to understand that there would be ample members (all members, not specifically the Member title) that would demand the quick-fix way of trying to cheat the system. I see three particular ways of them trying to do this.

1.) Complain, complain, complain. Either in groups, on the public forums, or in peoples' PM boxes.
2.) Trash-talk those who have the privilege, directly or indirectly, claiming they don't deserve the reward because of so-and-so.
3.) Try to "boost" the system; claiming they are good community members, or, much worse, by creating alternate account(s) to "proclaim" their goodness and contributions.

Each of those are able to be countered in their own way, but I just wanted to bring them to everyone's attention.

Although I'm sure it would convert one or two of them; my remark was half sarcasm. As for your points, yes they would happen but seeing as they would all decrease the odds of those people getting what they wanted I don't think they would really cause a problem.

Or I could be completely wrong and it would the first step to the demise of the forum.

Note: I would just like to mention that most of the time my sarcasm isn't directed at anybody. I just do it because I can and see the opportunity.

Oh, no. I'm not too worried about them being successful in their attempts (though one or two may come close at best). I just think it would be annoying if it were to happen.

Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

My Message Policy

This is adouble edged sword. Sure some people might get accused of elitism (thanks foman that was a good laugh) and even favortism. In the end though isn't that just jealousy rearing its ugly head again? Besides everyone is too busy complaining about recon armor and forum ranks rather than arguing about custom avatars. Either way, awesomeness will ensue.

  • 12.19.2007 9:12 PM PDT

You say tomato; I say potato.

In one hand you have member recognition and a chance to individualize.
In the other hand you will be taking away from the almost faceless banter that leads to the sort of bonds that community members tend to make.

These are the arguments I have for either side. I can not decide if I entirely like the idea.

I don't think custom avatars should be available to only Mythic or even Legendary members...but Heroic members and up. Because it takes about a year with a good community record to become a heroic member, two for legendary and so and and so forth.

People like me will probably not be here long enough to see ourselves as a Legendary member.

I couldn't believe it when Achronos actually granted member roles. I think custom avatars are a bit too much, if you ask me. Let's just leave things the way they are. The last thing we need here is elitism.

This is a horrible idea. This forum looks great without them. Any custom avatars that are used need to be submitted and reviewed to work well with the forum so it does not look horrible. If anyone gets a custom avatar, it should be Mythic Members and them only.

Heroics are common enough. If someone's gonna be uploading a dong, I wanna make sure it's a good one; One that could be described with the same adjectives that most people use to describe a nice ham.
