on each side of the laser is a tension meter set at so many ohms (resistance) After so long they will adjust themselves. Essentially you would need to open the xbox and put a tension meter on that and literally turn the screws to a certain ohm. i have done this many times with xboxs on ebay. and made some money. I have the instructions if ya feel comfortable of opening your xbox. . .

Dude so what about the CD-Rs. Does anybody know if it ruins your xbox by trying to use a CD-R. I know my original xbox doesnt sound healthy when a CD-R. and i wont put anything in my halo xbox besides the halo copy it came with, and halo 2 when it comes out.

cd-rs are a thinner cd , the laser has to adjust a lot more in comparison to a thicker dvd , the cracking and scratching noise you hear is the laser eye hitting the cd try to adjust to read it. which makes the laser eye cloudy and have a tougher time reading the actual xbox cds./dvds.

CD-Rs don't work. CD-RWs do.

Quote from a random website I found after searching a bit:

grug2k:
There are three different DVD-ROM drives used in the Xbox, depending on your model...Samsung, Philips, and Thomson, in order of preference (and newest->oldest) ... The Samsung drive will read pretty much anything, including CDRs and most DVD media. Philips tends to be picky, but is OK with DVD-R media. The Thomson drive sucks.

As such, not all Xboxes can read DVD+R.

As for games, there is no way in hell whatsoever.

a) The only thing capable of reading Xbox games are the 3 models of Xbox DVD-ROM, which only work in an Xbox. As such, without a modded Xbox, you can't read anything off the discs.

b) All Xbox executables are signed with a 2048-bit key. Without a modchip, theres no way you're bypassing it.

c) They also have a media check as well to make sure they are being played from a pressed DVD, which once again requires a modchip to bypass.

There are also pictures somewhere, to tell which drive you have without opening up your Xbox. Ill look for them later.

As ST said, there are three types of drives on Xboxes; one in from Thomson, and it sucks. Unfortunately, it seems like most Xboxes have that kind of drive. Mine does; I bought it in Dec. 2001, I think. You should be able to read CD-RW's on any Xbox though. I guess that would work for putting music from your computer onto your Xbox: just use the same CD over and over. Otherwise there is no to make an Xbox with a Thomson DVD drive read CD-Rs without replacing the drive itself (if that is possible; it should be!) and putting new drivers and whatnot on the Xbox, which, of course requires a modchip. I'm sure there's plenty of info all over the web about how to do this if you are willing to void your warranty!

Here is a site that you can buy various Xbox drives from (such as the Pioneer and the Samsung). This is for informational purposes only, and I accept no responsibility to bad stuff that could happen if you buy from here.

Also for information only, this site has many threads about the Xbox DVD drives.

Same disclaimer, here is a picture on how to tell what kind of drive you have:

I hope that helped!

I thought this was old news but just to clearify CD-R's dont work on the xbox but CD-RW's, DVD-R's and DVD-RW's all work.

DVD-Rs don't work, at least on older Xboxes.
