Subject: An idea for changes to the Community Files Forums.

I have an idea that may help fix some complaints about "Community Files". Many people complain about seeing the same type of user generated content in each of the Files forums. Many others complain about not getting their hard work looked at without resorting to bumps and cross-promotions.

I'm thinking you could fix both problems by breaking down into further sub forums. For example:

In the "Map Variants" forum, you could have a sub-forum for classic remakes. Then, within that , several sub-forums for the various classic maps. That way, people sick of sifting through posts of remakes wouldn't have to. Likewise, people looking for map remakes can go straight to those forums and find the one they want (such as MY amazing Warlock remake... sorry). This would also encourage people to make more original maps, rather that wasting time remaking the same maps that have been made many times over. There could also be polls inside those forums where people vote for the best version. That way, people know which version is considered the best, and see how high the bar is set before spending hours attempting their own remake.

In the "Film Clips" you could have sub-forums for different types of video: amazing kills, funny deaths, stupid suicides, full-games, kill-tastic sprees, Rube Goldberg-esque contraptions...

Again, breaking them down would reduce the time spent wading through the sea of posts. It would also keep new posts higher to the top of each forum longer, so the really good ones don't get drowned before they can be seen.

Thanks for reading, and please feel free to comment.

So I think Jun's a master chef, because he takes off his helmet and your like whoa, I think he's a chef.

So to shorten this up, Jun is master chef.

It sounds like it would be nice, but I'm not sure exactly what it takes to power a forum. It might be too much work for the servers to handle to have such a multitude of forums, but I really don't know. I'll wait for someone who knows something about that kind of stuff to chime in.

You could be right. I know nothing about creation/management of forums either. I would think that it shouldn't take up that much more resources, since it would in theory contain the same amount of posts, just more organized. In fact, it may even have less posts due to less bumps and less people complaining. I could very well be wrong though, and will hope one of the moderators will respond. I imagine if they could do this, then they already would have, but it never hurts to ask.

I agree with your idea to organize the forums into sub-forums. I too do not know the mechanics of the forum engines but it does not seem like it would take any more work except for the initial creation of it. We need to push discussion on this issue to show Bungie that we are serious about the player created content in Halo 3. We want everyone to enjoy each bit of it and not let it vanish into the abyss at the end of the forums. Jagendorf signing off for now.

I'm sure it wouldn't be to much work to create sub forums like the idea proposed. Consider that every group on Bungie has its own forum and their must be at least 100,000 groups. Most of them are small and don't get frequented a lot but I am sure that the forum software can handle a few sub forums. Now the question of whether Bungie would be willing to do this is a completely other issue.

It wouldn't strain the servers. Achronos said that the Stats part is much larger then everything else combined.

only eat one small snack a week to save money on food and just have water toilet and lights to save money thats my plan

Though the Earth is dying we must enrich her body, for the ground we tread is hφly.

I'm a lion in a world where everybody's content with being cats.

Text is almost nothing in the world of data.

For example, around 24 Kilobytes for a paragraph times(*) oh say...2 million paragraphs, total, of all the posts on Bungie.net, it would only be 48 million Kilobytes= 48 thousand Megabytes= 48 Gigabytes...Which is just 2.4 times more than the Xbox 360's Hardware space, relatively nothing. Now my stats alone probably take 40-100 Megabytes of space (At least, let's put it at 60 Megabytes) so it would only take 8,000 people with my amount of data (when they are over 100,000 people on Halo 3 a day) to reach the amount of Bungie.net's post data.

That shows that in just one day stats take up more data than Bungie.net's entire post data.

Please note, this was pulled out of where the sun don't shine and has no real numbers, that I know of, and was made to show how easy it is for a game tracker's, as complex as Halo's, data to surpass simple textual data.

I am a proud user of correct spelling and grammar.

If only the game shipped with completely empty maps, then we wouldn't have thousands of the same canvases floating around the forums, nor would it be adding to our custom content limit. *sigh*

That is a good idea, but couldn't someone just post their remake in the other forum instead?

You are right, though. The forums here are surprisingly small. Well before the release of Halo 3, Achronos confirmed that the actual posts in the forums (not including the software and such) only take up about 5 or 6 gigabytes (gigs) of space. Obviously, the forums have exploded with activity since then and I wouldn't be surprised to find that they have doubled in size -- but still pretty small, eh?

I like this idea a lot. Like you said, there are too many people posting in the file forums and what we have is currently too general.

All map variants here - Bam

Busier than the Halo 3 forum even. :o

My only concern is that one category won't be as used as the other one..
Betrayals in the suicide forum. It wouldn't work. A new set of rules would have to be set for members not to post in the wrong category.

It wouldn't work out. If people aren't getting replies and downloads then their only option if to take the file off the file share and put it back on. Then they can re-publish back to forums without it getting locked.

Yah, i thought about that later. There would be more policing to be done to keep people from posting in the wrong threads. Policing requires people. People cost money. Companies don't like spending more money that they have to. So unless the same number of moderators could handle that, it likely won't happen.

Doesn't this happen already anyway? I know i've seen the same user repost the same map with a new description and a slight change and call it "V2.0" I think it is part of the current problem and a symptom of the "my map wasn't on the first couple of pages long enough" disease. The disease that might be healed by using my suggested treatment. (Did i take the medical analogy too far there?) Less posts on a forum means more exposure for your particular file, which should lead to more downloads, replies, and ratings. Then, people wouldn't need to try to cheat the system. Thats my theory anyway. Thanks for all the replies, and keep them coming. I'm looking forward to hearing from someone "in the know".

Is it ok to bump in this forum? If not, delete this and i won't bump this again. Thanks.

  • 01.01.2008 1:57 AM PDT

Since i did not get any response about bumping being bad, i will bump this just this one final time. I really want to hear from a moderator that can pass this along if it is a good idea, or tell me otherwise. Thanks.

Edit: Ok. Sorry about the bumps. I checked the stickies, but did not check them thoroughly enough i guess. Won't happen again. Please delete this and the previous post. Shame i won't get a response on the topic itself, since it seemed to catch the interest of several people. But i guess no answer can be interpreted as confirmation that my idea cannot or will not happen. Thanks, and sorry again.
