Subject: Colored text for members (the old days)

I am against this idea, it would be abused. People would impersonate moderators and such every second. People would flood their post with so many colors.

I do, however, think it should be implanted into private group role privileges.

I think we can stick with the colors only for the moderators
That way we can tell who is moderator and who is not =p

Why do people in ship mutinies always ask for "better treatment"? I'd ask for a pinball machine, because with all that rocking back and forth, you'd get a lot of free games.

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words - "mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

Don't be use -blam!-.

Anyways, It isn't like the colors would be as crisp as the mods/admin. If I remember right the colors weren't very crisp at all. So we could tell who is who.

PS: IF the government removed the ability to paint your car any color you want, would you be pissed? What if their excuse was that "it makes you stand out too much from others, so we are going to remove the privilege". Thats all I see here when you guys say that there shouldn't be any ability to post colors simply because its ugly looking and makes people stand out too much. Im really just playing devils advocate, but come on guys, get some better reasons to not allow this other than ugliness.
You have no rights, play nice.

I am against the idea because I see no point at all in coloured text and it helps to distinguish mods and staff. If you can give one good solid reason please do so, all I can think of is "It helps to break up posts", use sub headings, "Highlight words" put the text in bold, "Make my text look pretty" Okay now that is just plain sad. Rainbow posts do something which bungie.net is against, they draw the attention of others who think that they have to say is more important. It isn't.

No. We definitely do not need that. We are good as it is, and it would be over used.

Also, it'll probably cause elitism, or something.

"I pledge to punch all switches, to never shoot where I could use grenades, to admit the existence of no level except Total Carnage, to never use caps lock as my "run" key, and to never, ever, leave a single BoB alive."

2B || !2B - Why don't you look Inside the Machine?

My problem is this: "How well would colors fit into the current scheme and hierarchy of Bungie.net?"

Of course people, those who end up banned, would abuse the colors if they were permitted, but my concern isn't whether idiots will persist in idiocy. As of now we have a hierarchy of colors: Grey-ish Color - Normal Users, Orange - Ninjas, Gold - Bungie Employee's/Superusers. The coloring system is used to show who is who on the forums. It is much easier to search through a wall of posts and find the gold text indicating a potential solution to any problem that you might have rather than have to search through 3 - 5 different other colors at the same time.

Also, "How would colored text effect the layout/scheme of the website?" Assuming that colors were permitted, I believe, that only a handful of colors would be at our disposal. Why? Simple, to prevent a bad looking forum system. It doesn't make sense, if permitted, to allow users to post in colors that don't seem natural to the design of the forums - like cyan, green, and hot pink (except Stosh). So now with that possibility in mind, what would be the benefits of a coloring system that was natural to the scheme of the website? What if we weren't limited to natural colors to the site's scheme?

Benefits:

* Potential for users to express themselves and potentially organize lengthy posts better by coloring different sections.
* Make users happy by giving them "powers" that they can use.

Drawbacks:

* Potential for illegible or really annoying text.
* If colors are not regulated to specific natural colors to the sites design, a potential for a messy/ugly looking forum.

Can't really think of more than that at the moment...let us continue.

Now how would colors be added to Bungie.net? Would they be available for everyone immediately? Would colors be gradually handed out as gifts? How would all of this be achieved?

I see one of two ways that colors could be distributed: everyone gets them at once with all available colors, people earn them.

If everyone gets them at once with all colors available (assuming colors are selected to match the natural surroundings of the site) then it wouldn't really hold any meaning or value, significantly. That in and of itself might be a good aspect because people are less likely, in my opinion, to fight and quarrel about "Oh you got THOSE colors?" Everyone would be the same and would have the same power, color-wise, as anyone else.

Now, assume the colors would be given out as a merit for being good. What types of things/merits would you have to achieve to gain color power?

Now that members have "ranks" or at least "good behavior" ranks/titles, I think it would be cool if colors were released to help extend the depth of the new behavior titles. Something like:

Member - Default Color & 1 other color
Heroic - Default & 2 colors
Legendary - Default & 3
Mythic - All Access

Maybe not exactly like that, but I think it would give extra incentive to people to be really good to gain a benefit. It is kind of like unlocking a special present that is precious to you.

About Elitism:

Poppycock, Bologna, and Poo. Those who wish to be idiots and elitist jerks get dealth with. People need to stop being so danged pessimistic about the community and post nicely and behave. Complaining about the problem isn't going to get the problem solved...taking action will. Taking action does not mean "complain" about a problem (such as spam/elitism) becaues there are appropriate methods for taking care of them. The methods are called: "Contact a Moderator" and Report as Spam button. /my peace

"Science without religion is lame. Religion without science is blind." - Albert Einstien

I am also really tired with the members here who hide behind the rule of "You have no rights, play nice". Its the dumbest defense, since you need no reasoning to back it up. Its easy to just say you can't, but try explaining yourself. If you don't your just spamming.

If we had no rights, we probably wouldn't be able to post here, nor would we be able to make suggestions, or anything, since we would be devoid of the ability to do anything. The fact of the matter is that without a certain amount of rights on a forum, members won't stay here. Members need a sense of security, and that usually means trusting them with a certain amount of responsibility (modship, reporting, group creation, news submissions, etc). As a member, you have the right to voice your opinion on the forums, doesn't mean you will be heard, but its a right none the less.

I don't think colors in the pubic forums would be a good idea, there is too much potential for abuse. I would like to see them in the private groups though. There bungie wouldn't have to deal with any of the mess, or abuse that may happen. It would be a way for private group mods or admins to distinguish themselves from the rest of the group members. Maybe make it a feature that ties in with their security roles in the groups?

The second half of this post is a great thing, since it shows the practicality of colored text. Although the first sentance is something I hate seeing. Saying it will be abused without saying how. But I agree that they should at least be available in groups.

*Sgt

I did like the customization of signatures with colors (I have to admit, I don't read them anymore now that they aren't automatically visible), but other than that I think it would cause a lot of chaos.

People would post ridiculous amounts of text with colors, for the sole reason of making their post stand out.

People would post several colors in one post, making it hard to read.

People would color their title in strange ways, to make it stand out.

All of these scenarios are things this forum can do without. I really don't think the need for colors is high enough that we should risk the abuse of it that could follow. However, I do like the idea of it being a power in Groups. I think it would work well, and really differentiate the different levels in each group.

I remember when I used this space to put cool looking links to my chapters back in the day. I don't even know why I'm using it now. Why are you even reading this? You must be interested in me. Still reading?

Why can't you just accept the fact that we are inferior to our fellow B.net Gods and don't deserve certain privileges? Things haven't happened in a long time, true, but you can't expect every single person on B.net to obey the rule of "No abusing color text!" The only reason we don't have a bunch or Rainbow Text floating around is becasue we don't have it anymore.

While I would love colored text, I don't think the majority of the Bungie Community is. . .mature. . .enough to handle a privilege such as that.

  • 12.26.2007 9:30 PM PDT

It is pointless anyways. I can only see it be useful in long color-coordinated informing post. But other then that, no use for it.
