First, there are no longer health bars. (However, this like everything else design related, is still up for internal Bungie debate.) Instead, when your shields pop you can survive a further two or three hits before you die. In my hour of playing, I never noticed this change affecting how I played the game. In fact I dare say that if you weren’t looking for it, you’d never notice it yourself.

Marty O’Donnel explained to me that this change was discussed and implemented because of the way so many of us played Halo 1. Think about how whenever you got hurt, you’d slow down and wait for your shields to recharge. The only change to the shield system were the new special effects seen when they pop and reactivate. Both are visible in first person to you, and in third person to all the hungry sob's waiting to kill you.

yes I was arguing with some guy about that quote ages ago... Its not confirmed whether its out though.....

There are two groups of people in the world - those that hope, and those that wish. The first group hopes that nothing bad will happen. The second group wishes that they are there when it does. Which one are you?

So does that mean it will always take two to three more hits when your shields are gone? Or does that somehow recharge too? What I'm getting at is if there is a varied number of hits that it takes to kill you, will they be cumulative or only last until your shields recharge?

My thumbsticks will be your Doom.... sorry 'bout that.

I don't understand this. Why would having a health bar effect the way people played the game in relation to thier shields??? If everyone can see that your shields are gone by shooting you once and noticing a direct hit, and if you can tell when your shields are down because of the Shield bar in HUD then what's the point??? if there is no Health bar then how will you know when you are about to die? Will there be Med kits?
this is too disturbing for me to comprehend. I think the reporter for opa must have conjectured something outa nothing here. I also think that Bungie didn't show us the final HUD for obvious spoiler reasons and that we will still have a shield and Health bars (i hope to god, if not i'm at a total loss as to how they are trying to affect the way we play the game).

Im sure we will have a health bar. Bungie did say they wanted to keep Halo the same as it was just add more greater stuff and upgrades.

When your shield bar is all the way down, then your shield "pops" (you can actually see it pop, and enemies can too). Then it takes about 3 shots to kill you (when you are shot with no shield, blood bursts from where you are shot)

Why does it matter if there is a health bar or not? It simply takes up space. Its simple, when your shield is down, DONT GET SHOT like in real life... In real life, you wouldnt know how much health you have left, but you know how powered your shield is.

I think that the no health bar thing is strange, yet if it plays like Halo 1 then i'm happy. But what about a plasma pistol charge? Does it still take your whole shield? In that case you could dual wield a plasma pistol and SMG, fully charge pistol, let go and then put two bullets in them with the SMG. Sounds over-powering.

i sure hope the health bar will be there. without the game will lost one of its most interesting features, the balance of health and shields.

no health bars would encourage gung-ho tactics, because if you survive the battle your shields will recharge and then you're back to full strength. which i think is kind of stupid.
i loved halo partly because sometimes you had to be careful not to damage your health, and some of my best moments playing halo have been in legendary about to enter combat with full shields but only one health bar left.

GAH.

Bungie wants to make H2 more realistic. You dont know how much health you have in REal LIFE, but you could check how powered your shield is through your battle armor. When your shield is gone, you are not supposed to get hit! Like in REAL LIFE. I think its an awesome idea by Bungie!

okay i get the shield 'popping' thing but how does this affect how people wait for their sheild to recharge during gameplay and what about MedKits????

and hey, what about MP options for no shields? I love playing without them with Pistols only or no sheilds and beefing the health up to 200% and playing with scope weapons.

there were no overshields or active camos at e3 so maybe they wont be in the game. also if this shield thing is final then maybe the health pack wont be in either.

i kind of regarded the health bar as your armour bar. so you have shields over your armour, then when your shields and "armour" were taken out then shots would kill you.

i dunno. perhaps it will work in the game, but i just have doubts is all. i think my main problem with it is that the MC wears a great bloody suit of armour. its not like it couldnt take a few knocks, i mean it took a beating sliding down that street in the e3 2003 video!!

and also.. does this imply that marines can only take one shot too? it surely ought to, otherwise it means that marines have better body armour than the MC. which is stupid.

hey buddy, in case you havnt noticed but master chief has MJOLNIR armor, its metal, that should deflect something. plus if that is the case, the marines wont last more than one or two at the most hits

Yo -lets not start talking about REAL life here people. We are talking about a biologically enhanced supersoldier with armor that supports the most advanced AI. You don't think that the suit (which is connected to your neural pathways to get specific) will not be able to keep track of....errrr.... how healthy you are?

Plus -how will you know when to make a dash for a MedKit or will they do away with those too?

The thing is that if you're only HP is shields, plasma weapons will be over powered. It's important to have an equal number of shields and health, so that you can at least have a chance to survive against both types of weapons.

They might do away with medkits too seeing as there were no powerups in the multiplayer. Listen, everyone who played it said it was brilliant. The health system OBVIOUSLY works so stop complaining and if its in the final game its in and its gonna rock!
