Help please!!!
After spending years playing xbox Halo I today bought it for PC so that I could enjoy online destruction. After a few minutes I got a STOP error. When I went to the Bungie site and looked at "known video problems" -lo and behold my graphics card - ATI Radeon 9000 - seems to be an issue. I followed the link to the ATI site and downloaded the recommended driver and followed the instructions..........................
.............now - after nearly having to go through a system restore (ahem!!) I have had to reinstall the original drivers. The new one simply wont have it. It tells me repeatedly that there is no Video driver. It should now be as it was when I bought the computer so what is going on?
Anyone else have problems or a fix.............which wont kill my computer......like the recommended one nearly did.

Did you uninstall the old driver first?

It was that move which caused all the problems actually. Having uninstalled it as instructed I then tried to reinstall the "new" driver from the download. I have just read a few other threads on here and noticed that it looks unlikely that its going to work - looks like I am a good few graphics cards behind - even though my laptop is less than six months old.

Am I going to have any better luck with an Nvdia geforce 2 MX/MX400 - this is the existing card in my "tower" PC. somehow I doubt it....

Sorry to ask this - this must be the most commonly asked question ever. But I am really annoyed because the ten minutes I got on the internet were brilliant and I was really looking forward to it

Looks like I might be talking to myself but No - you cant use the Geforce either. That didn't even get past the first menu screen.

Why invent a game which doesn't work with what they say it will. Can I get a refund?

Heyyo,

But he's better off with the radeon... it's faster at least.

Ok, make sure you update halo to v1.04 at least (don't do v1.05, gots probs). You can do v1.06 if you want so you can play online, but it tends to crash a bit more than the other patches...

I suggest using ATI Radeon Catalyst v4.5 drivers as the new ones seem to suck with halopc...

Also, make sure you remove any traces of that previous videocard as it's probably interfering. Uninstall anything on your comp that says nvidia or geforce or forceware or detnonator drivers onnit. You can leave the driver install files there, but not the actual files.

Thanks to both of you for your comments. I better explain myself a bit better - the Radeon 9000 is in my laptop so I am stuck with it. I followed the instructions given on this site to "update" to Catalyst 3 and it was having none of it. I had to go back and restore the old drivers - wouldn't even let me update with newer ones.

THe Geforce is in the Tower upstairs. Will updating the drivers help? That card is the one that came with the PC so there has never been any cross-contamination between the Nvidia and the Radeon.

I had updated to Halo 1.06 on the laptop but l will uninstall it all now as I dont think its ever going to happen on this baby.

Heyyo,

Hmm, it shoudl work, it's a supported card: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=829478

Ok, now, for your drivers on the laptop for the ati mobility, what version are they now?

for your tower, the nvidia drivers, make them v52.33. anything higher seems to suck serious ass on halo (rendering problems n' such).

You'll have to excuse my sheer lack of knowledge about these things. I've never had to even think about graphics cards before.

I am presuming that the Geforce should work as it is supported. Thats interesting because it didn't even get to the opening of the game before it "fatal error" ed on me. I need to check the drivers - thats fine but what if they are the wrong ones.

I'm a bit scared of that because of what happened with the laptop when I tried the recommended idea from Microsoft. i used whichever drivers came with the Restore disk. Having deleted them - I tried to install the Catalyst 3 as it said - "No chance" and then tried to put a brand new one in. At that point it said I didn't have a video driver. Which is where I got all confused.

Excuse my complete stupidity also but where can I get the Nvidia drivers from - their website?

Heyyo,

Go to the website of your notebook's creator, and get the drivers off them. New ones should do ok too. Make sure those drivers say "mobile radeon".

As for the nvidia? just search on google for: forceware 52.33

and that should set you on track. ;)

Erm, for some reason the ATi website is showing the current version of catlyst drivers as 4.12... and yet someone mentioned there were 4.5 drivers available?? Halo, HL2 and Homeworld2 have been running slower since I installed the diver assuming it was the latest and most up to date. Maybe ATi has something against games beginning with H, or maybe I need to get 4.5 somewhere else?
