If so, for how long?

I own Halo 3, enjoy the online gameplay.. but I also still enjoy playing Halo 2 just as much. I was wondering if there was any news on Halo 2 servers being shut down, when, or anything of the sort....

For a while until the Xbox 1 Gets Xed and no Xbox Live goes to it..........
Just because Halo 2 is what most Xbox 1 Players - play.

Hopefully for a long time because as of now Halo 3's matchmaking is nothing special, I'd rather play concrete matchmaking.

More than likely Bungie will. if you play something like Command and Conquer renegade online. the servers for that are still up and running, andthe game is 8 years old. same as halflife. so i would think that bungie would more than likely keep the servers for Halo 2 up cos quite a few people havent got halo 3 or a 360 yet

Halo 2 doesn't actually have the big dedicated servers -- it uses the "virtual couch" party system, where one player is selected to be the host based on connection quality, and everyone else subsequently gets put into that party.

Because Halo 2's XBL play isn't reliant on servers, people can keep playing until the service itself is shut down or damaged, in theory. I can't imagine that they would shut it down, though.

Even if it is shut down their are these alternate programs you can get on your pc to help host for free with other users who carry the same program. I've never really used it nor am I willing to go into any more detail.

While this is correct halo does use severs for other means such as playlist updates and statistics. This type of info is not demanding on bandwidth but if Bungie did decide to turn the servers off you would only be able to play custom games and wouldn't be able to access your stats on Bnet.

I remember when I used this space to put cool looking links to my chapters back in the day. I don't even know why I'm using it now. Why are you even reading this? You must be interested in me. Still reading?

I cut my Halo 2 XBOX Live a while back but I truly miss the old gameplay. I haven't played Halo 3 live yet so I can't say anything. Halo 2 should ontinue to be playable on XBOX Live considering the talk about Halo 2 live over Halo 3.

Frank O'Connor is a 12-year veteran of the videogame magazine industry and has therefore never worked an honest day in his life.

You still have at least 2 years left on the original service I would say. I imagine Xbox live team has a cutoff data set for the regular xbox but they aren;t going to share that info for some time and even when they do you'll have a good 6-12 months to upgrade.
