Try for a 8800GT if possible. It's the best bang per buck at the moment IMHO.

That.

Honestly. $50 - $100 more for something that will last you a lot longer then the 7800GTX is well worth it.

If you are on a budget you can get a ATI Radieon HD 3850. Its about the same as the old 8800 GTS and about half the price.

the 3850 is also $200. The 3870, which is the near-equivalent of the 8800GT, is $50 - $100 more.

He was asking for the best for his buck, after all. Why spend $200 on something that's going to last another six months then dish out another $50 - $100 for something that will last you over a year and a half?

H1 and Halo Custom edition name: madkiller92
xfire:madkiller92

I saw at newegg about 2 1/2 weeks ago a nvidia geforce 8600 256mb for $100... don't no if they still have it.

Well the 3850 is good, but he has to jump on it quick, because the price is driving up fast. Also I should last him about a year, I got a 7600GT for almost the same price, and it still runs a few of the latest games. It's really up to him though, it's an ATI vs. nVidia thing.

Everybody here is right. It all depends whether you want more shader processors and whatever or more bang for buck. Get the Geforce 8800GT like everybody has been telling you to

I got a 7800GT and immediately regretted it when the 7900 came out and sold for the same price. Go for either a 7900, 8600, or 8800.

Let there be CHAOS!

I'm going with everyone else on this one. The 8800 GT is the way to go. I've been trying to get my hands on one but everywhere I try they are always out of stock! ARGH!

Don't go with the NVIDIA 7 series, that's last generation. The 8 series offers much more performance for the price. Also, I did my research, and the 7800 line is really expensive for some reason. Any on the 7800 cards is a terrible value. I recommend either the 8600 GT, or, if you have a bit more money to spend, the 8800 GT. You should also consider the 3850 or 3870 from ATI. No matter what you buy, I strongly suggest that you buy from Newegg Their prices are really good, the shipping is pretty cheap and really fast (when I ordered my parts for my computer, most of them arrived the next day), and they have good customer support.

I just got the nVidia 8600GT. I don't need the latest and greatest, once I install it I'm sure I'll be satisfied with it.

Honestly the 3850 is the best bang for the buck out right now. I can't see how you cannot see that unless your were involved with a major wood chipper incident that took off 1/2 of your brain.

I did plenty of research, benchmarks, and reviews. The 3870 is a rip off because it cost an extra $100 for 15 FPS. The 3850 runs crysis very well for the price its at. Its counterpart, the 8800 GT and GTS (old, non G92) cost 100-200 dollars more and do the same thing but with maybe 10 extra FPS. I honestly could not live with myself if I spent an extra $200 for 10 extra FPS.

Seriously I don't buy for the damn name. All I care about is if it going to run my games well and at a low price, and clearly ATI has it on this one. Nvidia is still selling the 7000's for an arm and a leg (as posted before). Nvidia had there streak before when they were the only company with DX10 cards. Now it looks like there pissing around, thinking they still are. Seeing them release some info on the 9800 GX2 and seeing that it only has a 30 % increase over the ultra makes me want to cry for nvidia.

I'm only imagining what the nvidia fanboys here will post as a reply and it looks pretty lol'able.

My simple reply is that unless you are a crysis fanboy like you seem to be, judging all hardware against crysis is pretty lol'able.

Yes, I am a hypocrite, and I'm sorry. I really do mean well, but I'm not running on all cylinders.

Everytime someone buys a copy of Halo 2 Vista, a puppy dies.

I would judge all hardware against Crysis because right now it's the only game I got for Christmas that really doesn't work on my rig!

I would save up just a little bit longer and go for that Radeon 3850. You won't regret it.

I second that notion. I'm getting one myself because of all the good things I've heard about it.

Edit: Don't mean to threadjack, but noticed no one mentioned power supplies and power requirements. I have a 420W, the card should still work, right?
