Hey guys, Hato here. ;).

I have a few questions concerning Halo 2's port to Vista, which I just bought today.

But I have a few issues.

1. A few of the character/vehicle models look like they are wired (meaning they have occuring white lines striking through them.)

2. I actually just got Blue Screen of Death... :(. I have heard that you may only use your CD Key...twice is it? Well, I really don't want to have to use it again because I have to reformat, and if it happens again - my online is screwed. What can I do to prevent this?

For No 1. You are probably all thinking, "LOL HIS SPEC R SUXOR". My specs are actually pretty good, i've got a GeForce 8600 GT and I surpass all other requirments, yet I still have these texture issues/lag.

Help would be greatly appreciated. (Please do mind any spelling erorrs in this due to the fact that I typed it fast. :P.)

Thank you!

- Hato

Long live the Last Refuge!

well i had halo 2 vista for a while now and I'm well below the system requirments, I've never had the blue screen of death before and my character models don't look that great. But I don't realy care about my garachices that much.

Thank you again, :P. I really need a Bungie staff member or someone who has experienced this issue before, because I would not like to find out that I cannot play again because of a technical error.

Edit: Been looking at some topics - you can't be serious. You mean to tell me that if I use my CD Key a few times I can never play LIVE or anything again? You've gotta be kidding me. I understand now that Bungie does not support the game, but I am sure that this has at least pissed 500+ people off. This must be fixed.. they need to think of a new way to be able to validate without having to make the people who actually BOUGHT the game suffer.

Yes, I am a hypocrite, and I'm sorry. I really do mean well, but I'm not running on all cylinders.

Everytime someone buys a copy of Halo 2 Vista, a puppy dies.

Yes, it's true. My copy stopped working while I was re-installing and troubleshooting, and Microsoft sent me a new copy. They're supposed to be able to generate new CD keys and give them to you over the phone, but their system doesn't work, so now they're telling people they have to re-buy the game. It's a mess.

Most of the PC issues posted here are the result of PEBKAC.

I've reinstalled my game with CD-Key three times. No trouble here.

Thinking of something witty to write here since 2004...

I've installed twice on this computer and I've had no problems. I've heard of issues occuring when you try to install on more than one computer.

I re-installed about a dozen times.

I have reinstalled 3 times and been OK. The reinstalls were to fix Live problems by the way, not Halo 2.
The "white" lines in the models are due to tearing and it's all down to graphic drivers. Make sure you are using the latest nvidia drivers and use a driver removal tool before you update as sometimes the old drivers do not remove properly. Having said that, i still get graphic corruption in Halo 2 Vista but it really is not a lot to worry about.

Programatically invading forums.

Go to http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Scan.aspx?lang=en-us and it should scan and give you a link to an update. Try it.

Thanks for all the responses, but another problem has come up.

When I put my disk in, Startup.exe says the following: "Files are missing or are damaged in the installation directory. Some important files are missing."

I figure that this has something to do with the disk, so I am taking it to EB today to get my warranty use.
However, I then went to click the EXE for Halo 2 and it did launch.

Signed me into XBL, and went to the startup menu. I noticed however that even though I was signed in to my gamertag with gold (this one), Live and Network were disabled (they had not been before the Startup.exe problem).

So I thought "meh, server updates prob." I went to play through the first level, got the achievment for beating it. Then it said this. (woo 30g)
"Your product key was invalid and you now have the "trial" version" or something like that. Basically it wouldn't let me play anymore levels.

So, there's gotta be something wrong with Startup.exe. Help please.

BLLASAHHH BLALAAHH!!! I LIKE PIIEE!! LAWWLL!!!

Sounds like you're gonna need to reinstall it by the sound of the problem you are having with the startup.exe that isn't the disk, a file is probably corrupted that's not the disk that's a problem in the installation files.

My halo 2 doesn't work anymore either, i have had to reformat a dozen times to get Halo 1 PC working. but it didn't work and mesing up Halo 2 in the process with the CD Key error.

You can try copying your install files to a Disk, then reinstalling it. Then replace the new files that are installed with the files on the disk you copied.

Other than that... make sure your drivers are up to date for the graphic issues and that you have the latest directx.

If you do all that and no success... i have no idea!

The bungie.net community is the halo PC community that is renowned for being unbelieveably sucky.

Yeah, manually delete all the H2 files off your PC.

Blue screens (BSOD) are typically a sign of bigger problems. The saying goes, once you see one BSOD, you will see more.

Gaming Systems:
Intel Core i7 720QM (4 cores, 8 threads)
4Gb DDR3-1333mhz
1Gb AMD Radeon HD 4650
Windows 7 64bit

Xbox 360 w/ 20Gb HDD (2008 edition) & XBL Gold.

I've reinstalled three times with no consequence, i think the cut-off is something closer to ten times. So you should be fine :)

Ok, just looked in my "Games" folder. The game apparently didn't even install, and it won't let me uninstall in any way...I can't re-format either, lost my Vista CD-Key.

Help. :(

  • 01.05.2008 1:13 PM PDT

You can use the CD key like 5 times before you have to call and I've reinstalled I think 13 times on more than one pc ;)

Reinstall but when you do click "Customize Game install" and then click "Fully install, do not start."

Hope that fixes it.

Oh boy, you've been putting up with a lot (and been polite, too), haven't you? xD

I'm really not sure what to say here. Because it seems to have been discussed to the breaking-point.

Perhaps you can take a few screenshots of what's going on, host it in a website, and show us?

I'm no help, sorry =[
