I'm having a problem with halo, I've had it for quite some time now. My PC is a fresh install, fully updated with drivers, window updates, etc
p4 2.4ghz
512 mb ram
128 mb radeon 9600
80% space free on the HD.
Soundblaster live!

Basically its a dell dimension 4600 with a new vid card

my problem is that when playing halo (and not any of the other 75 games I have laying around) the sound is staticy and scratchy and usually results in certain bits being cut out. When the game starts the music is fine, in game the sound is fine until alot of stuff starts going on at once (i.e. when you charge up your shields at the beginning and alot of sounds play at once, the guy talks, you charge up there is a field) it starts to scractch. Anytime I try to fire the assault rifle and there is other sound it scratches and voices will cut out (like if your AI is trying to say something) sometimes even during a cut scene the sound will scratch (not usually, but sometimes)

I have no idea whats causing this at all. this is about my 5th install my first being like last summer.. I seem to recall it working fine then as I was able to play through to the end no problem.. but each subsequent install has resulted in this. Is there anyway it could be related to the video card? I think I have the latest catalyst drivers for that card... I think I only played the game from one install while I had my old geforce4 440 mx 64 mb 8X AGP. Please help this has been a long problem, and I haven't been able to play halo for quite some time because of this.

this is defentley not your video cards problem (not to my knowledge at least). However it depends wherver the sounds is scratchy ALL the time (for example when u load from a certain point in the game like 5 mins in) or is it just some time after the time has passed. If its constant all the time, then think about changing your speakers/headphones, or the audiocard. If it isnt constant then the problem is inside the computer, and you should try to update everything you have, which includes drivers, and everything else (the game too of course), and if the problem presists try to exchange the game ,and if things get really bad then you could think about reinstalling your operating system (probobly not necessary, and if it is i doubt you love your halo that much)

I just reinstalled my OS read the first part ;) Its a fresh install with fully updated drivers for EVERYTHING. No other game scratches like this so it has to be this game. Every other game no matter how many sounds etc occur at once is completely fine.

Basically when I start the game right from the beginning the sound is fine for a minute or two. Until you get to the shield part where they hook you up. Thats the first time there is alot of sounds at once, it starts skipping/scratching/static. If I save teh game there and load it back up , still the same. When you walk out in the hall and there is the explosion the guy screams, boom door flies, lots of sound same deal. WHen I get an assault rifle, same deal. even when I'm walking around there is a very fine static occasionally for no apparent reason. I've played games like max payne 2, deus ex 2, C&C generals zero hour, etc all without a single sound problem (among many others). It has to be in some way related to halo but I don't know what it is. None of the patches seem to address sound issues nor do there seem to be any reported sound issues for Halo.

Could be a screwy soundcard. Get Dell to have a butchers.

If it was a screwy soundcard why would it have worked last summer during my first install of the game and not now, while all the other games are having no trouble..maybe its having a moral objection to halo?

I just experienced the same problem only once though, on the last level when loading a checkpoint on the Warthdog "crash-coruse". I think its just a game bug which happens sometimes, notify Bungie of it, they should fix it.

you might have the speakers to loud , as feed back will make a scratchy noise, that and i dont care how fast your processor is , if your front bus on the computer is around 433mhz the info from the disk to the sound card will go through a funnel like effect and will not be able to process the info quick enough.
