Okay, Halo games are rated "M" for Mature. That's a fact. But why do I see people--kids, really--like myself almost disregarding this small sticker on the packaging? i mean, i started playing games on Nintendo 64 that were rated "T" a long time before I was a teenager.
Are the ESRB ratings dolled out just to give parents excusses to not buy a game? Or are the ratings so far off no one listens to them?

what really buggs me is when parents buy thier kids an M game and when the kid does something violent, they blame the videogame company.

ITS YOUR OWN DAMN FAULT!!!

True--either parents blame the game or something on TV.

Do other countries have different ratings, our ratings are E(exempt from classification), G(general), PG(parental Guidance), M15+(you must have a parent if not over 15), MA(mature audiences) and R18+(you must be over 18)

ESRB started with the first Mortal Kombat game, because they realized there are just some things 4 year olds should not play. Actually, in my opinion, every 4 year old needs a good ass kicking Mortal Kombat style. Nevertheless, the ESRB ratings do serve a purpose

Has anyone realized tht the blood in Halo 1 looks like paint? I mean, it looks like the Grunt tripped with shiny blue paint and died. Come on. They just don't want us to have fun.

I think Recon's siggy makes a good remark for this:
"Alien slavers or fanatical religious aliens, they all bleed in bright colors. Like a box of 64 color crayons when you hit it with a flame-thrower. Tozt anyone?"

You all get the marathon reference with "Tozt" right?

I think Halo was orginally going to be rated Teen. I think this because the other night I was looking through some of my old gaming magazines around the time before the console launch. and I saw an ad for Halo in it. and it was rated Teen, however a few monthly issues later I saw the same ad this one rated mature.

I know right! When I worked at Wal-Mart this mom tried to return Grand Theft Auto saying it was too violent after the kid already opened it.

She: Can I return this game? It's too violent.

Me: No, because it's opened.

She: Well, I didn't think it would be that bad.

Me: It's rated M for Mature. Kind of like R.

She: I thought it was a racing game or something.

Me: (stifling a laugh.) It's called Grand THEFT Auto.

She: So I can't return it?

Me: Try and trade it in at EB.

Everything will be gone long before me. When the first living thing was born, I was here, waiting. When the last living thing dies, my job is finished. I'll put the chairs on the tables, turn out the lights and lock the universe behind me when I leave.

What's weird is if people accually listened to the ESRB ratings, half of the people that already play Halo 1/2 wouldn't be alowed. Same with GTA and stuff like that.

Has anyone here seen the stuff about the governor of Ilinois making a big fuss about M rated video games. It seems like the main thing he's trying to do is make it illegal for underage kids to buy mature games. The funny thing is, that he's fighting for a law that is already in place. Because we all know that preventing kds from getting violent video games is WAY more important than healthcare and managing the economy.

Oh yeah, we need to kill those evil games WAY more than we need HealthCare.

the gaming indistry is rapidly going downhill because of people like that. its almost a sick crime. people with little or no common sence let thier kids buy games that they are WAY too young for, and then blame others for the "side-effects", when its really thier fault that they allowed thier kids to play that.

i'm not trying to be prejudice or anything, but this seems most common in kids 12 and under. they're still learning the ways of the world (more so than most teenagers), and sometimes begin to think that some of the stuff in video games is easily replicated/OK to do.

you can kinda guess where it goes from there. i'm almost 15, and i have played several M rated games, but have never even come close to thinking i should do any of this stuff. granted, killing virtual aliens in a mass slaughter is undeniably fun, but when you go around thinking that the old lady walking down the street is a Grunt and you decide to try and get a hold of a gun, you've got problems.

to the point: parents, make sure that you know what your kid is playing. you may not really want to, but watch them play for a few minutes, and take some notes on what you see, including the rating.

You're right, some kids are very impressionable at a young age. I for one played a lot of pong and now I deem it alright to hit things with paddles.

I would just like to point this out. Remember Columbine? The kids that went berserk had SHOTGUNS under their beds, bomb parts in the basement, and had regular hours at the firing range. AND THE PARENTS BLAME VIDEO GAMES! WTF?

This reminds me of the sad tale of Manhunt. It was banned in New Zealand and then in the UK because of this. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/leicestershire/3936597.stm Idiot parents let their child buy a game that was over his age by a long way. I'm not being racist but it's pretty obvious that with a different background it wouldn't have happened.
