Halo 2 Vista will never be worth the money as long as it uses Live and requires Vista.

Stupid parents let their stupid children play games that are rated M when they should be playing Big Birds Spelling Adventures

Also the AR is actually good in CQB now and no longer a glorified baseball bat.

Yes, it is worth it. If for no other reason, for the single player.

The online portion is fun, but there are aren't that many regular players.

I agree about the single player, but don't think even that justifies the price. The game is a good buy at <25 bucks. We all know M$ won't be reducing the price that much for some time. I regret spending 50 bucks on the game, despite enjoying the campaign.

The multiplayer is a disaster, sorry. I know people enjoy it, but I felt it was just awful and the lack of any real community makes the game pretty much dead at this point IMO. I do not see them selling a ton more copies anytime soon if ever.

I feel there are much much better games out there.

  • 12.28.2007 3:33 PM PDT

I agree that there are much better games out there, Frnksnbns, like Call of Duty 4, and a couple others that I forgot. If you don't want to pay the $50, you can always buy it on eBay.. Atleast that is where I might get Halo 2...(I never played Halo 2 before. :(.)

  • 12.28.2007 3:44 PM PDT

I keep getting banned since the mods are unfunny and suck at their jobs!

I wouldn't really recommend it. You should buy a newer game, this wouldn't be a problem if the game didn't lag too much. Your computer needs to meet certain requirements for this game, so i'm told. It's just not worth your time to play an inferor port. If you really want to play Halo 2 I suggest buying the Xbox version.

Yeah, Halo 2 Vista is a really crappy port... That's what happens when you leave the port up to a crappy, small team comprised of Microsoft interns (I wonder who was the most popular at the watercooler), rather than leaving a good developer (like Gearbox Software) to do the port.

Don't get me wrong, it is a good game, just a little inefficient, and a fairly small (but growing) population. To be honest, I still find it the most fun out of all the Halo games =D

Plus, who am I to complain? I got it for free... , as an, uhm, gift.. yeah... from the Internet....

DON' TELL FRANKIE!

Halo PC's port was much worse though.

Respectfully disagree. The campaign was pretty much perfect and the MP was released at a time when 56k modem support was (unfortunately) still a reality. Gearbox did an excellent job with the requirements Bungie/M$ put on them. I'm surprised you would say that considering how much you've played the game over the years. The other point that I would make is that most respectable gaming review sites widely hailed the port as a must own game. Considering that Halo Xbox never had online play, the port was an amazing evolution of one of the best games ever made. The whole Hired Gun fiasco was pretty much a joke. At least Gearbox was competent.

The PORT was worse. The game was better. Halo 2 netcode is much much better and it runs better. LOL did you forget how many issues there were when the game first came out?

What issues? If you mean technical issues, I never had a problem at all with a 9800pro. Gearbox was updating the game almost immediately. The netcode was definitely the suck, but that was a result of 56k support and the DS's refusal to cut off players who dropped packets. Halo Xbox didn't even have netcode, lol, how would that make it a bad port?

  • 12.28.2007 6:04 PM PDT

Gah Dont worry about Agamemnon's Comment. He is anti GFWL(Games for Windows LIVE) and hates it more than anyone.

Live has its goods and bads and Halo 2 is good overall.

What are the specs of this new computer?

-team killing
-horrible performance
-cant render proper camo on nivida cards
-cant use anti-aliasing at all
-netcode
-no rcon when released

Do you remember how bad it was that for a few iterations of ati drivers the sniper scope didn't work at all? Goes to show how close gearbox worked with the companies that actually produce the hardware.

No doubt Halo PC pushed hardware when released, but turning off a few of the advanced graphics options helped. H2V has basically no advanced graphics options.

Teamkilling: check.

Camo on nVidia cards: nVidia's fault, didn't affect me, when are people going to realize nVidia has horrible drivers and tries to misdirect by releasing a new driver set every week.

anti-aliasing: game didn't support it, but early on you could force it with horrible results...:) now completely disabled...

netcode: Microsofts fault, definitely a problem, but a consistent problem that anyone could adjust to, you seemed to adjust just fine there buddy :)

rcon: released in update 1.02, the first update to Halo PC (if you don't count 1.01 which was released before the game was released and required to install from day 1 before you get online)

1.02 also added auto ban

And as for the sniper scope, I honestly don't remember that, but I bought Halo PC in March or so 2004, so I missed out on the first 5 or so months of those first days. It was probably fixed by the time I had the game.

Clearly Halo PC was not a perfect port, or even a good port, but it wasn't terrible by any means otherwise thousands of people wouldn't still be playing online 4 years later. I think we can agree that Max Payne was the best 3rd person shooter of all time though. And I know you love Halo PC just as much as I do. We both have good taste in games. H2V is a good game, but the online doesn't float my boat.

I wonder if it would even run! There was a spot that crashed the game on newer hardware. There's a patch...make sure you install it.

BTW, I am visiting the folks for the holidays and am in major PC gaming withdrawl...among other things...cough cough...

How new, I played through both on an 6800 gt, unless something has changed in the 8800 series?

The patch is real old by now I guess. Last time I played MP was probably 2002 or 2003. Here's the latest patch version directly from 3D Realms.

err....that didn't work....lol... copy past ftw

Yeah, is it so bad to not have Microsoft want to capitalize on the gaming market for the PC and get everyone to pay for a service that others provide for free?

Shame on me. I'm a bad, bad person to want to keep things for free while others want to let Microsoft get their grubby hands and make more money. I mean, they need it after all, especially when they have to sell parts of their company so no one brings charges against them for being a monopoly.

The game is worth $10 at the most, and that's only if they get rid of "Windows Live."

H1 and Halo Custom edition name: madkiller92
xfire:madkiller92

I bought it for $50, but really it's worth $20 at the most, multiplyer is fun, but only teh most popular maps have poeople, playing same map over and over agian? BORING. On multiplayer everybody says u hack, or uses heavies and vehicles, then get REALLY mad at u when u do it back to them. And custom maps with people in them is RARE. They could had tried to make the graphics better, and the scarab gun aceviment is driving me crazy i can't get it!
Even though halo 1 has way less weapons and new stuff, it's more fun, no live is great, cod4 multiplayer has no live, so i can still do everthing for free. I liek halo 1 better, it was more fun, you could kind of tell their might have been a little more time or effort on it than h2v.
So if your wanting to get it think... ARE U A REALLY BIG HALO FAN, enogh to buy the game? I thought I was, it was OK, h2v isn't bad, but it isn't that great, it's a 2.5-3 out of 5.
