Before Halo 3, this forum, the Septagon, used to be a magical land of spam free forum topics, decent forum topics, and of course, no Recon armor discussions. Now, with all of the Halo 3 madness still going on, people have polluted this forum with nonsense that belongs in other forums. Mainly Halo 3 topics have been found inside the Septagon. To maintain a balanced forum environment, we must go through a little Homeostasis. For those of you who don't pay attention in Science, it means to adapt and change a status in an interior to maintain a balanced environment. To clean up these forums, I really think that members should use their common sense. The forum captions alone tell what the forum is meant for, so why not pay attention to them. I wouldn't say that I haven't posted a topic unrelated to a forum before but I'm just saying that it isn't a good thing. Suggestions to solving this issue are welcome.

No.

The irony in this post is amazing. You clearly have not been here in a loooong time as "time to clean up the septagon" is far and away the most popular topic here.

I dont agree with you when it comes to the forum banner/caption, I think its part of the problem. IMO there where less stray topics here back when the banner still said Septagon since people didnt really know what it was so they found somehting they thought fitted better for their topics. Now its just saying Bungie Community and i can honestly understand that some new eager member posts here after seeing that, they recognize Bungie in the title and figures that since theyre making the game. What i dont understand though is how they can NOT see the halo related forums when reading through the forum lists, im pretty sure that most members here are reading from the top and down.

Srsrly Halo 3 > This forum. Even if I joined years ago and was an active member all this time, I would still put Halo 3 above this forum.

But! I do see what you mean...you're just looking for a way to get it back to the way it used to be...I understand. It might (might not) change in time...but with my experience on other forums...no one person is capable of changing something like that.

If it changes...it changes...if it doesn't...then it doesn't and you'll have to adapt.

Not one of these threads again...

This forum is this forum. It's always been. :D

Besides, the Septagon is (in?)famous for these kinds of doomsday "Not the old community" threads. You're just proving it's exactly the same. >_>

FYI, it's actually a strategy that some people use to post in a slower-paced forum with the intention of it being moved as off-topic to a fast-paced forum. This tactic allows constant viewing from two forums and generally keeps the thread alive much longer than it would have otherwise lasted. Which is not cool. I don't know how that problem would be fixed, though.

As far as posting questions about getting on Bungie Favorites, getting Recon, etc., I'd much rather that be asked here than the user not asking at all and going through the forums without the knowledge. Topics about this kind of thing didn't exist before because Bungie Favorites and Recon armor didn't exist before. People can use this forum as a resource to gain more knowledge about the site and the community. It isn't necessarily a bad thing that so much of that is asked.

Now if you're referring only to the amount of locked topics in the forum, then it is significantly worse. I could see, however, no way to fix that. The spike of activity from Halo 3 inevitably brought some overflow to the Septagon. I don't think that will stop. At the same time, the type of topics and the content in the actual topics and threads here don't seem to differ very much in my opinion .

Not to sound like the stereotypical "elitist" member, since I'm certainly not one of the early settlers of bungie.net, but can one really make an informed post concerning the proverbial "good old days" of bungie.net if he / she has only been a member for a handful of months?

So was the time I came in (just after Halo 2) considered the "good, good old days" or something? I'm sure some people wouldn't even consider those good compared to times before.

Ah, its a vicious cycle.

  • 12.28.2007 11:46 PM PDT

I'll be on my own side.

Regardless of who does or doesn't know "the good ol' days", how is this thread going to solve anything? The "old" B.net had fewer members, and was a tighter-knit group of members. That's an undeniable fact, and it doesn't look like it's going to change anytime soon, so instead of complaining about the fact that the "new" B.net isn't as good, try making the best of what it is now, and don't make any more of these threads because they're old, tired, and pointless.

If you invite me to your group you will be blocked.

It's strange how people rag on the Flood here.

Although the two forums have a different main focus I've seen so many of these threads in both, with almost exactly the same replies.

There's been spam, flame wars, trolling, even (gasp) intelligent discussion.

On topic, these forums go through a cycle. I came in during the Halo 2 launch. It was crazy when I first joined. So many people, so may jerks, so many community legends.....

Now with Halo 3's launch? It's the same thing. These forums don't get old, they change, and so does the community. Some people don't like the change and say the forums are getting stale, or boring.
No, their favorite topic of discussion just happens to be different from what your idea of a good topic of discussion is.

The same thing is happening to the Underground, and the same thing happened to both forums after Halo 2 came around.

It's just an influx of ignorant members who don't feel like paying attention to the rules. It goes away.

We could have a forum called "The Elders" or "Moaning Old Men" a forum for people who have been here for a year or more. Keep away the vermin.

(Incase you didn't realise this was a joke but I am all for this anyway!)

A forum for a certain amount of people would reduce the activity on the other forums most likely...

Change is a natural thing. =)
Us humans have adapted to plenty of change more important then forums; so it shouldn't be that hard to accept change in here.

Appearances can be deceiving at times -- don't make the mistake of assuming that a person's knowledge about BNet begins on their join date and cannot go back any further. I have been coming to BNet on a regular basis -- including the forums -- since early 2004. I just never made an account or participated until 2006.

Also, don't forget that you could always be talking to someone's newer alt account.

The Septagon is the same. Only you have changed. While how it sounds rude, it is quiet true. I feel the same about The Flood, that it has changed. But that is just me changing. Same is what you are feeling. However, if you look around, everything is exactly as it was a few years ago. Discussions for improvements, discussions about corruption, discussions about removing a forum from the list, questions concerning gamertags; all is still here. As many people have said before me, the release of Halo 3 is making it rather tough to see the true Septagon.

SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

The Septagon sucks. Though, its still my favorite forum. Strange ain't it?

Yes it is. As to the OP's initial points, those have always been here. I remember the day I joined this site. People were posting Halo2 montages in this forum, because "its the community right? So why not let the community see my pwnage?". The subject may have changed, but the forum remains.

I suppose you could chalk that up to a few things. Firstly, the members not reading the stickies and secondly, the blurring line between the "Bungie Community" and the "halo Community". While I don't think there should really be a concrete distinction between the two, its easy for other members to think that their Halo 3 topic belongs here for the same reasons the person gave above when I first joined here. Some aspects of the Halo community belong here, while others don't. I don't think we can change that on initial appearance though, so I guess that won't change until Halo is no longer popular.

and then the OP will probably leave and this topic will become even more useless than it already is. Hooray for cynicism!!

Okay, first off I'm not going to stand and watch myself get insulted. I have been a member of Bungie for over a year and a half so I think I know what the forums used to be like. (Old account = Halop0wner23) And in my opinion, this forum has become a small wing of the halo 3 forum lately with some other topics that actually stick to the forum category.
