Does wrong spelling in topics/posts/replies anger you? I was playing with Sundried a while bacck and he kept saying how pissed he was that people kept spelling easy words and such wrong.

It's not that it angers me but so much that it's ignorant that people think that it won't anger anyone else. Do you understand?

The minor typo here or there, and the occasional misspelling of a difficult word is acceptable, but there is a limit to it. If you can't spell a bunch of long words, either use a dictionary, or use smaller words.

Or use Firefox. =)

I enjoy when people mis-spell simple words, it makes me feel superior=)J/k. But really I do find it annoying, for the most part I'll ignore those whose posts are filled with a large amount of spelling/grammatical errors.

Proud tester of the Halo 3 beta.

not that much really.. maybe if people spells like this: H3ll0 n00bl1ns!11! 1 4m Sp4r74n 3XR 1m4 pwn u all 2morrow. (example)

  • 12.29.2007 4:14 AM PDT

$x='print chr(36),"x=",chr(39),$x,chr(39),";\n",$x; ';
print chr(36),"x=",chr(39),$x,chr(39),";\n",$x;

I work at Microsoft. I have nothing to do with Halo and nothing I say is "the official word".

I only get annoyed when people consistently spell the same word wrong, like when you read a post full of the word "cheif" spelled that way.

I don't get annoyed really, but I do try to correct the offendee, and try to show them the correct way. That is, if I myself know how to spell it correctly.

The only time I find it annoying is when someone spells "grammar" wrong. And it's usually when they're trying to correct someone else's grammar lol.

The occasional misspelling here and there is fine, as long as the post is still readable. It's when the post is full ot typos and cat memes, and you have to spend a few seconds decoding it before you can actually understand what the point is that the person is trying to make. I think that that's just dumb and it does begin to get a bit under the skin after a while.

You mean Sundried is complaining about spelling?! Someone who misspelt "Sundae Pawn" when he created his gamertag?

Anyone but Foman. He smells like cheese.

Spelling errors do not bother me. I believe that the number of members is fewer than ten here who, when they post anything longer than a sentence or two, are consistently perfect in terms of spelling, grammar, vocabulary, and syntax. So in that sense, there is a ninety-nine percent chance that anyone who says anything disparaging another's technical writing ability is a hypocrite. Indeed, as TGP has already pointed out, the guy you were talking about in your first post hypocritically misspelled his own gamertag.

Anyway, I only pay attention to such things out of habit. Spelling errors, grammatical errors, or poor word choices rarely bother me unless, as others have said, the error occurs in a post attempting to correct or complain about others' writing. It's just a forum; there is no need to let it bother you otherwise (unless the errors are so bad that they reach the point of unreadability).

Trying something once will increace your chances of success, because you tried it. Try someting twice, and your chances increase yet again - seeing as you've done it. Try something a few thousand times, and your chances of success is exponentially increased; this increase would likely provide success every time

I'm with Foman, as I usually am, on this issue. Spelling errors simply are. No matter who you are, no matter what you do, there will always be a spelling mistake.

Me's woodn't knows, I has gewd spellinz

  • 12.29.2007 12:37 PM PDT

They don't bother me very often because I realize that sometimes you can get the point out without having prize winning grammar.

However, I do wonder why more people don't use a spell-checker built into their browser (much like Firefox has) as it makes things much easier.

  • 12.29.2007 12:44 PM PDT

No it doesnt anger me but i think if you want to be taken seriously by anyone proper spelling and grammar help alot

And no im not an angel with it either

Wrong spelling irritates me - it's like people can't be arsed with having standards anymore. I tend to pick at people on MSN who mis-spell...so when you've got time and resources making a forum post to get it right, the errors are more grating. The way I see it, if you can't spell a word don't try to (unless you've looked it up and found the correct version).

But when it's socially acceptable to throw correct spelling out of the window, there's little you can do about trying to rectify errors.

Mis-spelling annoys the hell out of me.

That being said, I can't spell worth a damn and it bugs me to death.

I blame the schools.

Only if they are simple words and it looks like it wasn't just a typo.

  • 01.01.2008 3:53 PM PDT

The only time it becomes a bother to me is when the entire post is misspelled. I don't mind a typo here or there, but when someone types the whole post wrong, or with a lot of number/letter combinations then it kind of bugs me. Most of those posts I just ignore, or report as spam since that is what many of them are.
