I have an idea for a video game based solely on this community. I want to use music from the Halo 3 OST.
Where would I get the permission to use the soundtrack? Or do I simply provide everyone who made the CD in the credits?Publishing another artist's music without express permission and making it available to the general public is a per se copyright violation, unfortunately. The Halo 3 Original Soundtrack is an album which generates revenue for its creators. If you make the music available to the public through some other medium, you are theoretically (even if many of the people who play your video game already have the Halo 3 Soundtrack) taking away revenues from the company who owns the rights to the Soundtrack.
The copyrights to the album are owned by Microsoft. To get permission, you should contact Microsoft Music Publishing at One Microsoft Way, Redmond, WA 98052.
