I've been gettin my *** handed to me on legendary the past few days, though i've managed to get up to and beat the first arbiter level (in four days of playing). I'm wondering if there's any good strategies for beating this game on legendary, kinda tired of taking about 2-3 hours to beat one level.

Take our time, hang back, and dont jump into fights like you would on lower settings.

Beating the game on Legendary takes a number of things:

1-PATIENCE! You cannot just run and gun on Legendary. If you do, the now more numerous Jackal Snipers will just keep pinging headshots to ruin your day. Your best options are typically to keep close to cover and let the enemy come to you, or let them come out into the open and pick them off with either the BR or the Carbine. If you are weak on headshots, practice. I find it helps much to take out the grunts and jackals first and then work down the elites. Elites, if they offer themselves as better targets of opportunity, go for them. The BR PP combo works best here. I prefer NOT to double wield because it is quicker to get a grenade off without having to dump the 2nd weapon. There is alot of cover in the game, and using it, including backtracking to it, is a very good way to keep from dying alot in the outdoor portions of maps. Indoor map parts offer just as much (especially if you have Sputnik). USE IT.

2-Sputnik............it is the easiest skull to get, and one of the most useful. It makes life easier in getting up into good hiding spots, and moving objects to make more cover if you need it.

3-MEMORY.......you will die from Jackal Snipers if you are going through on Legendary the first time. You have to have a good memory in order to remember where they are spawning. Unfortunately the only way to learn some of them is to get dead.....alot......Once you have learned where they spawn, it is alot easier to make it through.

4-Recon-In many places if you have either sniper rifle, you can use it to scope out the terrain in front of you for a good distance. Find a good safe place to look out into the upcoming map area and use the lower power first, then the higher power of the scope. Alot of times you can spot them before they spot you. Then you can move up from cover to cover and repeat. This makes life easier when you can pick them off before they scope in on you. Keep in mind that if you fire, WAIT before you poke your head out, better yet, poke your head out the OTHER SIDE of the cover you shot from if you can. Jackal Snipers have a keen sense of where shots come from and they tend to be ready to end you when you look out from your cover. When you are taking your shot, always go for their heads, usually a one shot kill. If you have to wait for them to stop moving, or for them to turn a different direction to get a better shot, then wait. Remember, Legendary is first and foremost about PATIENCE. If you do not have anything more than the BR scope, use the other weapons increased magnification view. It is stronger than the BR 2x zoom. Anything is.

5-Your Marines are fodder, it is ok if they die, but arm them well first!-Your marines are there to die so that you do not. If you have a chance, always give them better weapons. Take away from them SMG's as they are a useless medium and long range weapon. Even a needler is better for them. I give them the Rocket Launcher right away on Delta Halo, it gives me the BR and makes the RL last alot longer than my weak six shots. Give them anything long range, sniper rifles, beam rifles, carbines, BR's. Always the most powerful first choice. Be aware, when you do this, they are more deadly to you and other marines. Do not be surprised if it seems like these better armed marines are sometimes playing for the other team!

I will post some more if I think of anything as general. If you have specific ?'s feel free. I do not come online more than once every few days, so good luck!

Thanks for the advice guys, as for womyfts post, i've been doing 1/3/4 havent had sputnik on and never thought of giving marines better guns, i usually see them as "useless" meatsheilds, due to the fact that in the easier difficulties they seem to die off pretty fast, but i've noticed that they seem a little smarter and seem to live longer on legendary, so i'll have to check that out.

Here's what I thought was useful:

* Make use of the PP on Elites and Jackals with the personal shields (Make sure you also have BR/Carbine)
* You're going to die every once and a while, that is inevitable. But make use of your death and remember where your enemies came from and what weapons they used
* Be wary of snipers
* Make use of allies when you have them under your command. Give them good weapons since they have infinite ammo. Take note of weapons that don't really help. i.e Plasma Rifle, Needler, Magnum, etc...
* Playing campaign is the equivalent of having host in the MP, most if not all your shots will hit your enemy.
* Sgt. Johnson and the Spec Ops Commander (Half-Jaw) are invincible. Make use of them.
* When Hunters are on your team, use them as shields, and let them take down the bulk of the enemy.

Happy to help. By the way, I just noticed that you said 2-3 hours per level on Legendary. When you get to the point that you feel like you are no longer being owned by the game, you will find you have trimmed maybe 45 minutes at best. The levels on Legendary are designed so that you really do have to take more time. You cannot blow thru them. There are times during the later flood levels where all you will do is RUN straight ahead with Envy on hoping just to make it from checkpoint to checkpoint without dying. When you are playing with certain skulls in the future (Thunderstorm, Mythic, Black Eye) you will find the level may take you even longer than it does now. But half of the fun of playing the game on Legendary, with certain skulls active after that is that it forces you to play the game in a very different way. This is nice for a guy like me who only plays CE, 2, Doom III and Resurrection of Evil, because they really do not get boring with all of the different options.

Do not stress about how fast you can do it, enjoy the harder gameplay, and you will find you feel pretty damn good about your skills when you can go more than 20 minutes without dying.

Good luck and Good hunting!

With the Flood... target them from afar via nades and sentinel beams. Don't try and rush through them... it's suicide even on Easy (Sacred Icon I'm thinking of).

Don't run out in the open if you know there'll be a Jackal sniper. If you have an idea on his locale, send him a nade. Stir him up a bit.

Rush where you can. Use The grunt birthday party skull if you can, and Catch is good to use too since you pick up lots of nades that way. Sputnik makes it a gas and keeps your spirits up with the above skulls, because there's just so much stuff being sent to the clouds.

Kill..Run..Rinse(huh?!) repeat :)
Patience..
Grunt b day is worth it..
Use your knowledge of halo skills and previous difficultys to remember how to complete each objective so your not getting into unwanted fights..
