Halo can't be better Halo 3, because if it were, then Bungie wouldn't have released it until it was much better. There are a few things to consider here. Perhaps Bungie tried to make Halo 3 better than Halo. That doesn't mean they succeeded. Not all attempts are successful. There is something else to consider as well. The problem with sequels is that they must strike the balance between staying true to the original and being original themselves. Halo had simplicity while maintaining a learning curve. That was the brilliance of Halo: CE. This makes a sequel much more difficult than most games. New features are expected; this hurts simplicity. They also want to maximize the profit from this game. Learning curves hurt mass appeal. They try to aim for the lowest common denominator here. The strengths of Halo are the complete opposite of sequel goals. Taking that into consideration, Bungie did a good job with Halo 2 and 3. Halo 2 didn't stay as true to the original as many would have hoped, and Halo 3 attempted to please fans of Halo, Halo 2, and also achieve mass appeal. However, I don't really care about the "why;" I care about the quality of the game, and Halo: CE is a better game than either of its successors. Bungie has done a decent job of striking that sequel balance, but balance has never been the source of greatness. Compromise is just that: compromise. You're not achieving excellence in the eyes of any particular group; you're simply producing something that is acceptable to a lot of groups. I admit that the Campaign in Halo was much better, but all of the newer aspects in Halo 3 more than make up for the Campaign. Also, you can still do those System Network and LAN matches in Halo 3. So therefore, Halo 3 is better, overall. That's quite a logical jump that you made there. Yes, Halo 3 supports system link games. However, that doesn't mean it's better. The gameplay is still inferior no matter how you play the game. It's still a game built on top of compromise. Sure, it has some cool new features, but they don't make up for the inferior gameplay. Some of those features actually hurt the gameplay.
