I know we're all sick of CoD4 vs. Halo 3 so let's stick to a more overlooked aspect.

Halo 1 is better than Halo 3.

As dumb as it sounds it's true. Halo 3 may have forge and a great multi-player on XBL, but Halo: CE warrants more replay than Halo 3.

Let's take Campaign from H1 and H3 into comparison: Not only is Halo 1 Campaign better, it gives so much room to explore. Every large level in Halo 3 has a rediculous amount of invisible barriers creating a cramped environment on a huge level. The level Covenant is a piss ant put against AoTCR. Especially on Legendary. Playing Covenant is forced and rough around the edges. Control Room is huge and so fun to play. You can grab a tank or a banshee or a warthog or a ghost. You're not forced to a damn Hornet.

Obviously graphics aren't up for comparison. So we'll pass that up.

Music is better in Halo 1 just because it's classic. There's so many ugly remixes of Halo songs in Halo 3 that it makes me puke.

The A.I. in Halo 1 seems to be smarter than the guys in Halo 3. The marines know whats going on and don't drive away with your warthog [ or destroy you while you're in it]. Elite A.I. [and Elites in general] is a more enjoyable adversary than any Brute in Halo 3.

The diagnosis: Halo 3 overdosed on too much new stuff. Too many weapons [however I was very pleased to see the pistol and AR return]. Too many vehicles that have no real use [aside from the chopper]. Sure the jacking system was a cool addition, but Halo 2 already pulled that out.

Obviously online play goes to Halo 3, but multiplayer goes to Halo 1. XBC and LAN battles were plenty more exciting than the Halo 3 XBL. No wonder numbers of gamers on H3 have dwindled online from 500,000 to 50,000. Everyone has gone back to H1 or Cod4. I know I have.

I'm not saying that Halo 3 is a bad game. It's pretty good to be honest. But it is nowhere near Halo 1.

I'm going to have to agree here. Halo 3 wasn't enough of an improvement on Halo 2 or other previous games to warrant a status as better than Halo CE. CE brought tons of fun to me in a novel form with a different combat system than I had seen before. Halo 2 improved on that greatly with sweet new additions that addressed my claims and amazing maps.

Halo 3 hasn't really measured up in that respect. The addition of equipment seems to have just made the already medium paced game flow into an extremely slow paced game. While the melee system seems to be trying to do the exact opposite. It's like they're taking the game and pulling it in different directions all over the place trying to fix every flaw instead of looking at it as a whole.

The customization options for gameplay added in Halo 2 were great, and the ones in Halo 3 are stellar. Forge is a beast and the various things you can change make just about everything possible. What I don't like is the fact that the multiplayer seems halting and camp-festy. Overall I have to agree.

Halo > Halo 3

But when looking at the three games I'd say:

Halo 2>Halo>>Halo 3

They didn't really mess up too many things in Halo 3, but it just feels like I re-bought halo 2 with crappy maps and bubble shields and dumbed down combat. :/

EDIT:::

On the other hand, though, your point about the music is horrible. Halo's music was classic, but Halo 3's soundtrack is epic. You can't tell me that the level with you charging down a snowy cliff face on your Warthog, taking out a covenant sniper station off the jump, running over -blam!- and just overall owning wasn't epic. Halo 3 brought a conclusion and that was great. Looking at all 3 objectively, Halo 3's story wasn't that bad. It just wasn't perfect, which is to be expected. Overall, it was still the best of the 3 though. :)

I definitely think that halo ce was great..... but you have to admit, halo 3 is just as great. I feel like halo ce should have had the features h3 does..... and then, only then.... would that tip the balance into halo ce's favor

I'm a dude playing a dude desguised as another dude. I hate heritics, non-logical thoughts and people who are better than I am. People tell me that they like a lot of games, but I hate them all. Whenever I play a video game, I always go crawling back to Halo 3. Never go full retard!

Honestly, out of the entire trilogy, my personal favorite Halo game is Halo 2. Most people would argue that Halo 2 is the worste in the trilogy and that Halo: Combat Evolved is the best, but l beg to switch that around.

Here's what's up.

When Halo: Combat Evolved was made, it was the basic game. Bungie had never created a previous Halo game, so this layed the foundations for the franchise. Go figure people loved it and people wanted more.

So Bungie made Halo 2. What they wanted to do with this was make a more interesting and more expanded sequal to the game. So what they did was change things around... the enemies were weaker, there were new vehicles, dual weilding, boarding, a very extensive and more confusing campaign, more Covenant history...

I don't think people got too upset with the dual weilding and boarding. Infact, l think people liked those elements. l think what got people upset was that the story was so extensive, there was too much Covenant stuff and the plot was too wild.

But those were the three things that l liked best about Halo 2. I thought that those elements were what made the game great. Bungie focased more on what made a game epic and cool and focased less on those "thirty seconds of fun" that everybody keeps talking about.

Now changing those priorities and making a game universe "bigger" and "broader" made people mad, but boy did l love it. I think that my favorite levels are the ones that are very "Halo 2-ish". For example, my all time favorite level in any videogame ever is Gravemind. What elements does that level have? 1. lt branches out far into the Halo Universe (High Charity) 2. It involves the Covenant/Civil war 3. The Covenant Civil war provides the "cool" element 4. Long/Extensive plot undertones.

That level follows all the tendencies of the difference between Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2.

When Halo 2 was "over", people kept crying that the game wasn't like Halo: Combat Evolved. People begged for a more "classic" feel. So when Halo 3 was made, Bungie intentionally made it to be more like the original Halo game, combining those elements. The "thirty-seconds of fun" the more Human only oriented feel. And for the most part, the plot wasn't too extensive. Besides the last level the whole game basically took place on Earth and the Ark.

That's why when l rank my favorite Halo games from favorite to least, my list looks like this.

Halo 2
Halo 3
Halo: Combat Evolved

Now don't get me started on Halo Wars. That's a different story.

Some interesting points there, I don't tend to agree with them but everyone's opinions are as valid as the next, to cut a long story short , in terms of campaign my favs are as follows:

1: Halo: CE
2: Halo: 3
3: Halo 2
4: Halo Wars (Added for completion)

I hope that Bungie continue to steeer towards the Halo CE style feel, but seeing as the engine etc is the same as H3 then its more likley going to be more of the same....would like to have seen an ODST sequel that tells the story from the point of view of the ODST's that you never saw (in the books) whilst on Installation 04

I have to disagree that Halo 1 is better than Halo 3. I do agree with some of your points, like big levels to explore, but I enjoy the incremental improvements that were made to Halo 2, and then to Halo 3. The game feels more refined to me.

  • 04.17.2009 12:40 PM PDT

Why Halo: CE owns Halo 3:

A far superior single player
People that call you a noob after you've destroyed them. They can hide behind Xbox Live. Do that at a LAN party...
H3's Host advantage
H3's melee system
H3's spawning system
Far to few choices for matchmaking
You can't chose the map you want to play for ranked games
H3's illogical ranking system
H3's maps leave much to be desired
H3's grenades that don't go off after you die
H3's plasma's that don't explode
H3's Campers
H3's Kids that hide
H3's Banshee on small maps
Only being able to carry two grenades of one kind
H3's Auto-aim
H3's Glitches
H3's Cheaters
Boosters
Bridgers
H3's Betrayers
H3's Quitters
The flamethrower is worthless
Teammates that have matching names
There's no team snipers in H3
No SWAT in H3 either
The mauler
Armor-crazed morons

Because little kids can hide behind Xbox Live, you get...
Offensive names and symbols that nobody does anything about
Blatant racism and homophobia
Kids that talk to their friends and don't turn the mic off
Pushing up to talk (wtf?)
Using the sniper as a shotgun at close range

and last but not least...

NO CUSTOM GAME SEARCH. In H:CE, you could make whatever you wanted.

These topics are ridiculous. When Halo: CE came out, people loved it because it didn't have to live up to anything. When Halo 2 came out, new players loved it and thought Halo: CE was outdated crap, and Halo: CE players were disappointed because they were expecting too much. When Halo 3 came out a whole new breed of new players played it and decided it was far superior it Halo: CE. Halo: CE is an eight year old game. Of course it's going to seem old and glitchy compared to Halo 3. And Halo 3 will never have the same impact on fans of the original as Halo: CE did.

So people should stop comparing Halo: CE, Halo 2 and Halo 3 and accept that, yes, they're different, and yes, it's all OPINION.

Never heard of Goldeneye on the N64 then ? Every FPS coming out from the point of Goldeneye was compared to it....so in a way it did have a mountain to climb already.

When Halo 2 came out, new players loved it and thought Halo: CE was outdated crap

Not really, most people liked the MM functions but generally the opinion was that Halo 2 was a let down...partly down to the fact Halo CE was still fresh in the memories..

Halo: CE players were disappointed because they were expecting too much

I agree on this point, but I loked at the transition between Halo CE and Halo 2 as "not broken, don't fix it"

When Halo 3 came out a whole new breed of new players played it and decided it was far superior it Halo: CE

This new breed of players can have Halo 3 with the MLG fanboyism and rank chasing...if they had played Halo CE beforehand then the opinion would be drastically different....not having a stab at them as not everyone was around at Halo CE's launch...

So people should stop comparing Halo: CE, Halo 2 and Halo 3

Why? Debate is what the forums are all about....in that sense people should stop comparing classic cars to new models and so forth....

it's all OPINION.

Correct, but the point is what exactly? Everyone's opinion is as valid as the next persons, the forums are here to encourage debat and spread people's opinions.

Question to David_duffy (by the way I do not mean to offend on the above material) but what part of the trilogy did you start playing first ?

If I am going to be honest, I didn't expect that response....and I didn't want it to come across as me talking down to you....

Part of what you said earlier I agree with is true, but the sheer fact that more people talk about the good points of Halo CE (campaign, balancing etc) even upto and including today, than people talk about Halo 3's best parts.

This, for me, shows that even after the best part of a decade Halo CE is still considered brilliant, I just don't think that after the same period of time the Halo 3 forum will be full of the same level of praise that Halo CE got.

No wonder numbers of gamers on H3 have dwindled online from 500,000 to 50,000.

I'm afraid to say you're wrong there. On average theres usually over 200,000 people playing Halo 3 at any one time, and on weekend nights that number is usually over 300,000, easily.

Not to mention nearly 600,000 on the night of the release of Mythic (or so I was told).

I don't think people got too upset with the dual weilding and boarding. Infact, l think people liked those elements.

People who liked the Halo style of game play, which revolves around the interaction of melee, shooting and grenades, absolutely loathed the addition of dual wielding in Halo 2 because it dumbed the game down to essentially spray and pray at short to medium range, or battle rifle at any other time.

Bungie themselves have publicly stated that they screwed up by implementing dual wielding, that it broke the holy trinity of melee, shooting, grenades. Watering down the grenades and the massive aim assist only made things that much worse.

When Halo 2 was "over", people kept crying that the game wasn't like Halo: Combat Evolved. People begged for a more "classic" feel.

That's because it wasn't. It felt and played totally different. As a sequel, gameplay wise it was an Epic Failure. They might as well have titled it The Adventures of Arby the Arbiter.

Now you can argue the merits of Halo 2 as a game in itself, but as a sequel it failed.

Which is exactly what they needed to do if they wanted to make it a Halo game. I don't get the Human only thing, if anything Halo 2 also watered down the Covenant experience by taking away stuff that made their weapons unique, like the plasma freeze. Instead it was "spray yellow tracers from SMG, spray blue tracers from Plasma rifle".

They also made the plasma grenade explosion look really, really, really cheesy. Then there is the jump height. Then there is the no fall damage. The list goes on and on and on and on, endless pointless change for the sake of change, and by the time they were done the only thing "Halo" about it was in the title.

Bull-blam!-, this game is more than Nostalgia. It's a better game, if any one wants to play Halo:CE , I will play that in a heartbeat over H3, what bungie fails to realize is that H3/H2 are more accessible to the general public online, it doesn't make it better game.

I feel like, Bungie is choosing to make games for nerds that don't like challenging titles.

I destroy kids at Halo3, but I feel like even though I know the game way better then most of the players on Live do, am way more in tune to whats going on in the game and give myself the most advantages I can, noobs still kill me.

The shooting is dumbed down, the jumping skill is dumbed down, the melees lunge, there are no advanced moves to make with button combos (albeit it was an accident, but it was cool so why not implement it into gameplay somehow, DUR!) , no fall damage (Why!? So noobs can drop from wherever and not be punished, takes that element of thought out of the game), a br spread that's totally random, 4 shots to kill someone, net code designed to fake a consistant lag experience, when players could simply lead their shots in Halo: CE which was in fact more logical, no Health bar (go figure) , quicker shield recharge, rockets do less damage, pistols do less damage...

I HATE THESE "NEW/BETTER" halos and I hate that kids that have never played REAL; GOOD GAMES, WITH ACTUAL DEPTH in the Game play. It's like taking chess, handing me Checkers and telling me to enjoy it because of shiny pieces, -blam!- dat.
