Hello,
There has been a lot of arguements in the past, and recently, going on about if Halo 2 Vista was/is a good game. Many times this question has been asked by a new comer to these forums. So I see it fit for a final word, if the majority think Halo 2 Vista is a good or a bad game.
If you think it is a good game, then vote 'yes'.
If you think it is a bad game, then vote 'no'.
If you haven't played it, then just don't vote. A lot of people have been raving about how bad a game it was, basing their arguements only what they've heard, not what they've played.
If you voted on either two options, it's optional that you posted below why you think so. Again, it's the votes here that count.
Cheers,

Good Game, Live is nice I just dont pay for gold and Kinda wish I could host games as sliver without having to use dedi server to do it.

Campaign is still Good and I love the blistering fast load times :D

Yeah, H2V is a pretty good game overall that could become great witha few more tweaks

  • 01.03.2008 9:51 AM PDT

All-in-all, yes I'd say it's a good game. Could've been much better, though. If you love Halo 2, and if you're sick of matchmaking, H2V is a no-brainer.

Who the hell are you guys. Halo 2 Vista was the worst port of all time. To even stick with it is an insult not only to the market, but to fellow gamers as well so this kind of garbage can be had and gotten away with in the future.

That may be true, but in the end, you'll still end up playing a decent game of Halo 2. =D

With what? 12 people? In the entire game?

It is still a joke beyond comprehension. You're paying $50 for the same recycled garbage from the console and now you're being bullied into needing Vista to play and needing a paying Live account if you want to fully utilize the online features. It is beyond an insult; it's being legally robbed.

Couple things: There are a lot more than 12 people on at any one time; that's a joke :X

Also, I didn't actually buy this silly game. I gots fer free =D. Notice how I have every Live capable Games fer Windows game on my gamercard (except Viva)? I'd never spend one penny for a game I've been playing for three years.

<_<

But yes, you're absolutely right. $50 is a ridiculous price for an out-dated, 3 year-old game, that is one of the crappiest ports of all time. But, like I said, in the end, I'm still in a 8 vs. 8 game of CTF on Bloodgulch, and having a blast =D

It's not really worth it's price ($60 here in Canada), but this game is only for someone who absolutely must play Halo, or just has money to waste.

Jokes aside, this is my analysis of Halo 2 Vista, and why I think its a "good" game.

First, lets way the positives and negatives:

+ It's still Halo 2, only now its on the PC.
- You need to have Vista to play it.
+ The multiplayer is even better than before, because now you have 2 bonus maps along with the additional map pack and original mp maps.
- There are approximately only 50 people playing Halo 2 Vista at any given time. There are at most 3 servers full to maximum capacity.
- Games For Windows Live destroys the purpose of having freedom on the PC unless you get gold.
+ There is a map editor.
- The map editting kinda sucks.
+ Some textures are greatly improved, and with AAx3 you have a pretty looking game.
- Not all textures are improved, and after 3 years you expect a little more.
+ The game takes advantage of new technology such as playing the game immediately while you're installing.
- The game is buggy and requires a pretty good videocard to run mediocre graphics.

The bottomline is that H2V is a good game, and though its released 3 years later, when there is more to be expected, its still the same great game. Singleplayer is still a blast, but if you're getting H2V for the multiplayer, be prepared to have a very limited experience by both the small number of people playing, and the GFWL interface designed to take money away from PC gamers. Your best bet it to buy an Xbox360 and get the Halo Trilogy, and kick ass on Halo 3 instead.

It's really only good for the single-player. The multiplayer is just as noobish as on the Xbox. That being the case, I'd rather just shell out 10$ for a used Xbox copy than pay 50$ for a game that runs on an OS that most people would find to be incomplete.

H1 and Halo Custom edition name: madkiller92
xfire:madkiller92

Campaign 5/5 Multiplayer 2.5-3/5 it could be a LOT better, and halo 2 vista has 60-100 players, THERE IS ONLY 1 HEAVIES ONLY SEVER ISAW IT IS TEH XF HEAVIES SEVER ONYL 1! AND THERE R NO AIMBOTS! I'VE NEVER SEEN ONE. So it's desient, and u say it only has 12 players? don't say stupid bull if u have never played it ok?

The game is pretty good in the same way that H2X is pretty good. It's the same game, though, so it's definitely not worth the $50 I spent on it. Sure, it has prettier graphics and dedicated servers, but it's a lot more demanding on your system. The Xbox could run the game fine with a 733 MHz processor, integrated graphics (closest to a GeForce MX card), and 64 MB of shared RAM. Additionally, the dedicated servers don't seem to be that great (in terms of lag).

And that's just it. It's still Halo 2. The original game was full of glitches. Guess what? No one fixed them in the port. How is that a plus?

Posted by: Recoton007+ The multiplayer is even better than before, because now you have 2 bonus maps along with the additional map pack and original mp maps.
I hope this is a joke. You think two new maps is worth the $50? TWO. NEW. MAPS?

Posted by: Recoton007+ There is a map editor.
No, there is not. There are tools that you can use with a modeller like 3Ds Max, which costs over $1,000, but it does not come with a built-in map editor.

Posted by: Recoton007- The map editting kinda sucks.
More then you know. Guerrilla was heavily toned down and many of the old tools we had were locked in many aspects. Oh, and don't forget we can't make single player maps.

Posted by: Recoton007+ Some textures are greatly improved, and with AAx3 you have a pretty looking game.
It looks exactly the same. Upping the resolution from 640x480 to 1280x1024 is going to look good even WITHOUT anti-aliasing, and that is something that happens automatic, not through any developer effort.

Posted by: Recoton007+ The game takes advantage of new technology such as playing the game immediately while you're installing.
That's worth the $50 price tag, huh?

Posted by: Recoton007- The game is buggy and requires a pretty good videocard to run mediocre graphics.
And yet another immense flaw, and yet you go on to call it a good game? The game is beyond a joke. A joke! It was a damn insult to the gaming community. Anyone, and I do mean anyone, that actually bought this game and is encouraging others to buy it needs to have their Internet taken away and needs to be locked away in a loony bin, because this game was horrible and still is.

First, go buy this book. Second, yes, I have played the game. There is, at a max, 50 players playing the game at peak times. That's how many people are still playing Doom 95. If you actually even think that is anything less then a small band of fan children with a hopeless ignorance that the game they are playing isn't complete garbage, then you also need to have your Internet taken away and locked away in a looney bin.

Honestly, I thought the Maw was intelligent. What the hell happened? Did you all get knocked across the face with the stupid stick?

Honestly i didn't think the game was ALL that bad. While it may not be perfect its still descent, hell i cant think of any game that's perfect, lol. I have installed it 3 different times and have yet to have any issues with it. yes the so called editor sucks but overall Sp game play is still fun. I think most ppl's hatred towards the game is the simple fact that its Live enabled and that its MS, and we all know how some ppl feel about MS, lol.

  • 01.03.2008 4:15 PM PDT

xD, when I checked out this thread, and scrolled up, I saw a bunch of text text and quotes. I knew it could be only you xD

You enjoy breaking things down, don't you? Yes you do! Yus you does! Pfft peh pffft! Pleh.

You kinda need to get over yourself; you're being a troll =D

EDIT: May I also mention that I the only solution for map-editing doesn't have to be 3ds max. You can just get gmax, and find gmax-compatable export plugins, and still get a format that the map tools can use. That, or use Bit Torrent.

Agamemnon, just because you don't like Halo 2 doesn't mean you have to complain to everyone saying like "You are wrong. This sucks. That sucks." Look, it's all opinion. I like it. Going to complain?

Agamemnon, the question is not whether or not the game is worth the money; it's about whether or not the game is good. If your favorite PC game cost $1,000, it obviously would not be worth the money, but it would still be a good game.

Does it count if you played the xbox version? and you know they didn't change anything?

Here's the deal. Lets throw out the Vista, the lack of patches, the tiny community, all teh crap that made it worse. Lets start with Halo -blam!- ing 2.

First: The campaign. The ONLY redeeming feature was learning more about the covenant. Low quality cutscenes, mediocre AI, terrible balance, and a legendary mode that was not fun (just unfair) made it enjoyable? yeah. The first time I played it I loved it. Played it twice actually.
Multiplayer: Take the proven, working balance of Halo: CE. Add in new weapons, change them drastically, kill power weapon spawning, overcompensate with starting weapon weakening and create the bane of all shooters ever, the SMG. then make Dual wielding so powerful that weapon whoring is literally the only way to win. Add in glitches (in a console game) that literally snap all hope of it being a competitive game. Multiplayer on Halo 2 is one of the worst experiences I've had.
Graphics. Frankly, I wasn't too impressed with them to start out. And it's three years later and now they look like a steaming pile. High-res textures do NOTHING to help it.

So lets forget what made it even worse( if you think the move to vista made it better let me know). Teh game was was PILE to start out with. Anyone who disagrees frankly hasn't played many other games. Or at the very least not good ones.

Okay. You have 50 bucks for H2V, 50 a year for Live, or you can get the orange box for 50 bucks. Guess who never felt the urge to buy a port at full price when TF2 and portal are on the horizon?

Most of the PC issues posted here are the result of PEBKAC.

Well, I did like Halo 2 before the Vista version came out, and even though $50 was a little high, I bought it anyway. We only have so much variety in the PC market, and it's about time we share some of the console games. Some of the complaints that Agememnon made were true for the the first Halo as well, and the community grew. I think after some time goes by and the price of the game goes down, more people will buy it, and maybe, just maybe, support will be continued for it. Why should Hired Gun fix any of the problems with the game if it's not selling? Apparently there aren't enough of us who want change, so we'll never get it.

Besides its interesting system requirements, the game is great. Improved netcode as well as support for higher resolutions has made this game just a tad-bit more playable than it's predecessor.

Oh and if anyone mentions how Gearbox didn't fix Halo 1's issues when the demand grew, well, they tried. Halo: Custom Edition has a better netcode and support for custom maps, so at least something got fixed, even if the original product did not improve much.

Personally I H2V would be up to par with Halo PC if

1 I had a good enough computer to run it.

2 If Vista did actually like me.

3 If there was no "X to Delay" command on live.

4 Last but not least, if the 9/10 people that play the game did not suck at it.

Now there is a dev trainer out that works with Halo 2 and it works online, but the only thing that works online is the super jump. So all you see is a bunch of elite kids screeching "OMG GUAIZ I HAZ FOUND TEH SUPUR BOUNC" (assuming the only people that play an elite model is pre-teens that think aliens make you look kick ass (sorry if you do, but I have yet to see somebody on H2, H3, or H2V that plays an elite model that doesn't sound like a rat caught in a trap.) as they are super bouncing like they think there leet getting on top of the wheel in zanzibar untill I headshot them because they think they are in some sort of unreachable place where they can stand still and shoot at people with a needler and not get hit.

Least the 1 hit kill doesn't work right with the server, kudos to HG for getting that right.

All in all its a great game. Most people will complain that it wont run at 1280X1024 4XAA and at high on there 6800 P4 with 1 GB of ram, and the people that think VIsta is a con. Though they fail to look beyond that.

Long live the Last Refuge!

it's hard to give H2V a yes or no really. It's ok but it's not great or bad. If it had all the features Halo 2 had it would be a great game. Even though halo PC was the same as Halo for the xbox it had a few more things and Halo 1 was just a plain old great game that is still enjoyed by may gamers today. So i can't really vote on this becuase H2V is right in the middle of it.

Yes, I am a hypocrite, and I'm sorry. I really do mean well, but I'm not running on all cylinders.

Everytime someone buys a copy of Halo 2 Vista, a puppy dies.

Everything aside, I personally think Halo 2 is an okay game.

BUT. All my experiences with the Windows version have been BAD. So, good game or not, I am not a fan at the moment. I did get my money refunded, so I don't have the hate I used to have toward Microsoft regarding this game. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone though, because they would probably go through the same crap I did and end up with no way to play.

  • 01.04.2008 3:49 PM PDT

Let's put it this way: I'll tell you when I can actually _play_ the game. I will get back to you on that. I bought it in August, still can't play it (it installs, but never runs, telling me system resources are damaged or my system is incompatible.). I just got a nVidia 8600GT for my computer though, so once I get it installed, I _might_ be able to play Halo 2. I've been having lots of graphics related issues with my computer's crappy Intel integrated card, like access violations in Windows and Segmentation Faults in Linux.
