The End

‘The conscious is cancerous if allowed to linger’

"Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there."

Thank you everyone that has contributed towards this thread. I believe the issue has been resolved as best it can be.

Original Post:
This is not a post about a specific user I am just using this post as a good way of conveying my point as as reference. It is referring to a thread about "kiddies" something which is the basis for my thread and for a request for a new rule.

Amazing. I see it all of the time, but it never fails to impress me.

That whenever someone has decided that there is this group of "them" and they are taking the fun away from "us" it is always, ALWAYS a matter of perspective and imaginary dividing lines that the speaker has chosen. What is ironic is that the speaker has no idea that it is possible, or even likely that to others, they themselves could be seen on the "wrong side" of that dividing line.

It's when someone realizes that where they are in that comparison is dependent on who is looking at it.... that they actually get the wisdom to stop making petty labels in order to separate people into "us" and "them" groups.

Something tells me that what I just said has people tilting their heads to one side and going "huh?" Let's try this.

It's ironic that someone will say;
"Wouldn't it be better if we (good people) didn't have to deal with ________?" (insert derogatory term of choice noobs, kids, squeakers, poor people, immigrants, girls, racial group, religious group, political group, hair color, skin color, accent, height, weight, etc.)

and they have no idea that to others, either they are in that derogatory group themselves, or are at the very least a "them" to nearly everyone else on the planet.

I suspect that if/when someone realizes that as long as anyone is using labels to divide and judge, that they themselves are at risk of being labeled.... well that moment is wonderful. Because it means that they finally stand on their own feet, decide that they are not going to accept or use such silly groupings in any way.

In other words? Shut up YOU "kiddie" (or noob, or whatever term someone chooses). Because no matter how old/mature you think that YOU are, when you talk like this, you demonstrate that YOU are NOT "mature". At least not to someone as old as me when they decide to follow your example and draw a line themselves.
Recon has summarised something very well in this post and I would like to make a request for a new rule here on bungie.net. I see it all the time too, posts about all kids being squeaky, annoying, immature. I think many take offence to the constant barrage of insults from more "mature" members who have gone through the same life period themselves. I think these threads are a form of discrimination and I personally think they should be a bannable offence. These threads turn into a flam war between the "mature" OP and the "Immature" "kiddie" who is subjected to abuse.

I think if racism, sexism and other forms of discrimination are banned then so should age discriminative threads. Please discuss I would appreciate feedback.

Thank you

I was under the impression that most of the moderators don't tolerate that kind of behavior anyway. If someone is being derogatory, or talking about "Those -blam!- 10 year olds!", they get the boot pretty hard and swift. I know it's something I don't tolerate when I come across it in any situation. I'm sure the moderators are the same way.

And if they're not? They should be.

I think some are less strict on the usage of such terms and discrimination. However, I think it all needs to go. It doesn't promote good conversation and people get so easily offended by calling each other names. I really just ignore it and move on, the best thing to do is just contact a mod/report as spam and leave it be. It is rather tiresome to see everyone in the community quarrel over such ignorant and trivial matters.

From my experiences moderators tend to leave these topics open unless all hell breaks loose. I don't think a topic with such a subject should be tolerated from the word go.

Precisely. Any topic that suggests that kids are a different community where the OP attempts to divide themselves from them should not escape the lock.

Which it always does. The mods have learned topics like that are just problems waiting to happen. (Like MLG Topics) And like I said, if not, I completely agree. Such topics should be banned, essentially. :D

I do agree with you on the most part and believe any type of discrimination should not be allowed or permitted. I have seen people warned and punished for doing so, but I tend to shy away from the forums where this occurs most.

A possible explanation for why it may not be strictly enforced, although it may be, is that this is primarily a fan-site for people who like Bungie's games. As far as I know all of Bungie's, especially the Halo series are rated for Mature audiences only. Of course we all know that people who are not 17+ still play the game, heck I did. Is it fair? No. But that might be one explanation.

I'm guessing that the moderators do clamp down on this problem already, but maybe not.

Recon's N-word (Noob) Rant. I think this pretty much sums up the tolerance for discrimination. I think it would be good canon to follow for punishing people for discrimination on all levels or categories.

  • 01.03.2008 12:45 PM PDT

I get confused when people ask for "a new rule." There are general rules of conduct that we all follow, but as far as I know there's no big dry erase board that the ninjas have to peruse everytime there might be a possible infraction to see if a rule has been broken.

If a moderator sees that someone is being belligerant by generalizing or stereotyping, then they will punish the person as they see fit. Why can't we just leave it at that? Why the need for something "official?"

Well I think it is more of an outcry to just "crackdown" onto people who play the "age game" with threads.

Life is interesting...

This is where the discriminators sue saying they have been discriminated for discriminating.(if you get what I mean).
Just kidding.
What I think is wrong is that either A.) They want attention

B.)They were neglected as a child or is being neglected/abused.

C.) Hasn't quite figured out that a person is a person.

Or

D.) They know that nobody can see them therefore they don't have to see anyone's reaction or fess up to them.

No matter what they accomplished in their lifetime they are no better than you or I. So I have to say this. Just because someone is acting like a ________ (fill in the blank) that doesn't make you better than them so don't get stuck up and proud. If that is the case you are just as bad as his/hers actions. Just stay friendly and humble. There is a mute and a block option for everyone on Xbox Live for a reason.

I am going for both
It is easier to avoid discrimination threads than a person in Xbox Live.

Strange evolution how people have come to believe
That we are it's greatest achievement
We're barely, we're just a collection of cells
Overrating themselves

Is anyone really being discriminated against? Are there people who are preventing you from posting you thoughts, ideas, opinions on Bungie.net due to your age?

No.

What is happening is that someone is trying to offend you by calling you names. They seem to have achieved that. When I see it on the forums, it just lets me know what type of person I'm dealing with. Personally, Im of the opinion that words are words and people are far too easily offended by them. I suppose I'm just thick skinned.

This is just the Cliff's Notes version of how I feel on the topic. I don't currently have the time to explain further.

Despite your overly vague politically correct claim, we all fall under different "types of people". Whether it be religion, political party, sex, gender or hair color, we can all be categorized into different "types of people". Whether or not you allow those types to effect any weight on a persons worth is a completely different topic.

I believe that discrimination is wrong, but I don't see what's the big deal on calling people kiddies or noobs. Not that I use the words but you are overreacting.
Not all comments have to be by your means positive, as long as it doesn't get out of hand (like when all hell breaks loose) then it's just a healthy conflict of ideas. I think the mods are already doing a good job and that you need to stop crying over others conversations.
