Subject: Age Discrimination needs to STOP!

Posted by: Mepps Minnow 2
No matter what you still can't classify a person.
If you want I can argue semantics all day and all night.

We all generalize to some degree don't we? If someone says their [insert political party or religious belief] then don't we have a preconceived notion of what they stand for? At least a little idea in general of who they are?

Now when people use these generalizations to hurt or incite is when we have to put a stop to it, and I think that's what the OP is talking about. Although I stand behind my original statement to leave it up to the ninjas to determine whether there's malicious intent with calling someone "kiddie."

Seems silly to make a blanket rule when people use these terms in many different kinds of context.

I am a hypocrite.

Honestly, and truthfully, I completely agree with Twinkie and Weggie. Both, make very good points; both, have points that all of us hold true; we just haven't admitted it yet. Twinkie, for example, says everyone falls under a certain group, although it is our choice whether we recognize and accept that fact or not. This is completely true. No matter who you are, you have some sort of discrimination. We don't like to admit it, and we don't like to show it, but it is there. Everyone hates 'someone' for 'some reason'. There is no denying that fact. If you haven't realized it and have embraced it, then you are no doubt in denial. Everyone places everyone else in some sort of group; it is human nature. Look at a high school for example. Only certain people, hang out with other certain people. Sure, there are a few that hang out with a little bit of everyone, but not everyone. The point is, everyone has some sort of discrimination; it is only if we show it. And it is when it is shown, that everything becomes a mess; and people get offended. Words are exactly that, words.

Then Weggie, let those in charge of it decide. The mods are the ones that decide what gets locked, who gets banned; we just push them towards their decision.

Not exactly sure if this makes any sense, or even if I made points agreeing with Twinkie and Weggie; since my contacts at the moment are bugging my eyes like crazy. So, my apologies for any spelling mistakes, and if this does not make any sense. And, if none of the above made any sense to anybody, let me paraphrase.

I agree with banning discrimination from these forums, and no not just age, but all discrimination threads. No doubt someone will get offended. And when that does happen, things get ugly. Personally, I say people need to learn, like Twinkie said; words are words and people are far too easily offended by them.

Shane, I believe you may be missing a point in how the ESRB ratings are supposed to be. That is an 'estimate' as to when someone would 'mature'. However, we all know that a large portion over the age of seventeen isn't mature. In fact, they are the immature ones complaining about the people that are immature. Basically, ESRB is a bunch of asshats that don't know how to explain thing 'completely'. Basically, the age of seventeen is usually the time when most people stop lettings outside influences control their actions. For example, you ask a young teenager if he wants a smoke; he may say yes, he may say no. But if he says no, and you persist, then he may take a smoke. However, if you are seventeen, you continue to say no, no matter how long they ask of you. Now, this is just a magical world references. We all know that the above is not the true case, but it is the 'approximate' age when people no longer take outside influences. When the human mind has fully developed and the person is themselves. Mind you, again, that this is a magical world reference.

ESRB basically bases their age and ratings off of studies that show when the human mind has completely developed. Thus, allowing little to no outside influence. Not the literal maturity of a person.

This is the precisely the kind of stupid drivel that precipitates flamewars and high feelings. Please, for the love of all things good, invest some more thought in your posts than a blanket statement -- especially when the thread you're posting this in is against that very discrimination you seem content to express.

It's not just about explicit words, and labels, and calling people whiny kids. There's a common theme that binds the litany of age-related topics in the Halo 3 forum -- the ESRB is always mentioned (despite that it's a guide, not law), nothing is ever reasonable, everything is always absolute. Some even try to justify their statements with a thin cloak of acquired wisdom and armchair philosophy: "trust me, when you're older you'll realize you were an immature, whiny, high-pitched kid -- like I was!". And god, is it ever so annoying.

If you think there isn't any descrimination, think again. Just because you use words in a certain context doesn't hide the true meaning of them. Hopefully you will realize that there is a certain veil that was previously blinding you from truth. And step past that mark of immaturity that we all go through. Whether you drop it at the "cooties" stage or if it takes a prison sentance for a hate crime, you do need to grow up at some point. I really hope you realize that in the same way I have, a truthful way.

The problem is that everyone knows it's wrong to discriminate based on sex, race, etc. We don't see that sort of nonsense littering any of the forums except by trolls who are done with their current account. But considering the status and behavior of many kids on XBL, age discrimination is uniquely prevalent and accepted in the Halo 3 community. That's 2 reasons it ought to be specifically tackled -- a) it's unrecognized as bad, and b) it's popular here. Everyone has a story about that one kid betraying for a weapon, or screaming for chocolate milk -- but it's almost expected that this be generalized at the end , as a really poor kind of conclusion. Intro, blah blah, has this ever happened to you and post your own story and I hope all kids are banned from XBL.

Not that there aren't legitimate issues brought up in threads like those. And it would be silly to demand that every post on the issue start with a disclaimer acknowledging all relevant counterpoints. But a line has to be drawn somewhere, from which the mods' discretion can allow discourse to continue or force it to end. True, age discrimination is as bad as the rest, but it really needs to be recognized as such before it's effectively eliminated.

Let me add something:
It is in fact illegal to descriminate, kid or not. IT is considered a hate crime, an arrestable offense in the U.S.A. and other countries that have Xbox live. Whether you ment it or not the words left your mouth and into the pesons ear. Any one who does descriminate or lie about people can and hopefully will someday be sued and have a prison sentance. Mybe then, just maybe people will wisen up and realize how stupid and immature it really is to act in a certain manner offensive to other people. You do have the freedom of speach but that doesn't give you the right to hate on someone else because of who they are.

That's true and also too bad because it almost certaintly won't be more widely recognized until the problem worsens. If the level of discrimination doesn't worsen but stays where it's at now, I really don't forsee a huge problem in the future.

I can picture it now... the biggest court case of the century because of a hate crime over Xbox Live.

Well the ESRB has a bit more control than you all would appreciate then, since (at least in the state of Massachusetts) you must present identification putting you over seventeen years old in order to purchase an M-rated game.

I am not one complaining about kids, I am just saying that if you are under seventeen and have a problem with your online experience, just bear in mind that you are lucky to be playing it in the first place. I do not see 17 as a thin line. I am just saying that I appreciate hearing 11 year olds in lobbies no more than anyone else.

If you are unhappy with XBL because you are under 17 and playing an M-rated game, perhaps you should play a game that puts you into an online community with your peers.

I really do think there should be an official rule about that. For those who remember, I was an 11 year old on this site at one point. And sometimes the wrong people would know my age and say that my opinion was irrelevant regardless of what it said. Even now, people look at my myspace to check my age and use that against me.

Have you heard of the Xbox live code of conduct that we all agreed to when we made Xbox live accounts? It clearly states stuff like this is against the code and a banable offense.

Aren't you too girl to be here? Not to mention young. Sheesh. ;)

I believe the Code of Conduct on B.net covers all that kind of stuff. It's bannable, last I checked, and most mods will ban for it.

Actually, I'm younger than that. But being here for a while, I've made many friends who will have my back. (Even if Zag can be a little betch at times!)
But it's sooooo frustrating to try to debate/discuss when someone won't listen to me because of my age!

Well my intelligence stopped at about 11, and has been devolving since. I've learned a great many things from folks that are much younger than I. Anyone who feels otherwise needs to get over themselves and well... grow up. Now that's some irony.
