You have a substantial argument, but I still am inclined to disagree. To many, liquor has always been savored and not abused. Why is scotch or brandy aged for so long? To develop its distinct flavor, for once again: enjoyment. Its the same with smoking a cigar. You cant inhale one, that would surely kill you, and yet each cigar has its own distinct aroma and full bodied flavor. For instance, I returned from the caribean with a box of vanilla cigars and a bottle of 12 year old Brucal Extract Rum. I savored both, as did my friends. No intoxication was required to enjoy it. Tell me, who would spend $1000 for a bottle of Napoleon Brandy, for the point of getting drunk?
To assure themselves that they fit within a society mold of enjoying alcohol because of its taste, it's expensive and because it tastes 'better' (different) than cheaper alcohol. I believe it's not rooted in taste - it's rooted in their opinion of the value the drink has. And like I had said: alcohol became popular (aside from early necessity because of harmful bacteria) because of its intoxicating effects.
Tell me, why would someone pay $1000 for designer clothes? Is it because they find them more comfortable?
