Custom game stat tracking is a waste of bandwidth and time. Because customs are way to set-up.
Its all the servers can do to keep up with MM atm and we don't need it going any slower.
I am not sure that is the case. After all, the history of a custom game is right there in each of our game history listing. Medals, gameviewer, post carnage information, all of that. The bandwidth to load a page is the bandwidth to load a page. If it were that much of an issue, we would have never seen heatmaps or other features added to the site.
The data is most likely there, but not yet being displayed on a 3rd and yet unmade page of career stats.
Either the data for the current ranked/unranked pages are pre-calculated and fed on request, or they are calculated at the time of page request... I don't see how adding another page would be more of a hit on servers. If it is pre-written data, then it is a background process and those who don't click the link are still using the processing to generate the page (even if they never see it). Or, if it is calculated when the page is requested (and pulled from the existing data). In that case, it would be no more of a load than displaying either of the two pages that are already there. it wouldn't matter whether someone clicked on ranked, unranked or (the yet unmade) custom, the same amount of effort would be needed for any of the 3.
I'm not sure how the system does it, but I suspect that it is one of those two methods. If so, neither one has (that I can see) a horrible potential impact on site performance.
But that is based on my assumptions. I could be wrong. Which is why the thread is here. So that the web team might come across it, and if they consider it worth a response can say... "never thought of that, no problem", "we considered it and don't do it because of _____" or even "Nah, custom games are not anything we really care about".
But we know the last statement isn't true. It's been stated that the MM folks look at custom game data a great deal in order to track trends and see what the community is doing when they aren't "ordering from the menu".
As to the "validity" of the data? Everyone knows that customs are arranged. If someone gets 3 Million overkills in customs, who cares? It doesn't feed into EXP or skill calculations, who cares if it feeds into a personal "scorecard" or medal chest?
After all, Bungie is tracking some pretty esoteric campaign statistics. And those don't effect anything, or do anything other than encourage others to ask "what else has the community done with this game?"
Very nice defense.
I see now it wouldn't take much bandwidth at all.
I will now proceed to learn alittle more about the situation and comment when I fell I can logically.
