Ugh. I can't believe what I've just read...
The M6D and MA5B are good for different things. They're both extremely effective when used the right way. The pistol just happens to be more user-friendly for most people. Mostly everyone knows how to use the pistol, but the assault rifle in Halo's a bit different from assault rifles in most shooter games. It's accuracy is horrible in full auto, but it doesn't have to be. The first shot's always very accurate, with accuracy dropping as the burst continues. If you can rapidly pull/click the trigger to fire one- or two-round bursts fast enough, it overpowers the pistol out to a much better range than in full-auto. In fact, one could theoretically fire the MA5B in one-round bursts at full-auto speed, focusing it's superior power with enough accuracy to be useful. The MA5B's much like the other pistol in this respect- it becomes a monster in the hands of an expert. The AR might even be the most under-rated gun!
Which weapon is best depends on your skills, personal preference and style, situation, and whether your hands are on a mouse or Xbox controller.
Anyway, don't go bashing either 'cause they're both awesome when used properly. If you've been beaten down by masters, you know. The only weapon I haven't seen much ownage with is the needler, and even that might have some hidden nuances that no one's fiigured out yet, since most of us kinda avoid it like poison...
