It IS as bad as you think and they ARE out to get you.
1) No offense, but the first one looks like a job that was rushed or done by an amateur. The fist is completely out of place and the faces look just stuck on top of the picture, much like objects look after a use of copy/paste.
2) The second one is nice, but it does not fit. The top spacer has two glory shots, with neither character facing you, but the bottom shot is a frontal shot, and those never make good glory shots, because it looks like the character is looking out at the viewer. If you want a frontal shot, maybe try an angled one, so the character is looking at something beyond the camera. The overly blue tint also appears out of place. I don't think a color shot would be too much.
3) The third picture is simply too overpowering. The picture has an excessive blue tint and draws your eyes there. The white blotches of the picture are what really grabs your eyes, so instead of looking at the page, the first thing one looks at is the bottom picture, but mostly the glaring white blotches the are in it.
Additionally, I would avoid using doubles of the same shot, such as is theme #1 and #3
