Subject: B.net Profile Additions

"Science without religion is lame. Religion without science is blind." - Albert Einstien

Im not sure if these have been proposed already or not, but I feel it is an easy and worthwhile addition.

Profile Comments
I feel that allowing people to post comments to your profile would be great, that or allow small personal shoutboxes for people to talk to each other over one's page. This would really allow people to comment overall on the member's content (such as maps, screenshots and videos). These comment sections only need to be 3-5 comments long, and can have a link to view all comments underneath or above.

Personal Blogs
Now I know a popular saying around here on the forums is "this isn't your blog", but why not get blogging off the forums by giving members the ability to post personal announcements on their own page? Maybe have a section on the main profile page for a small introduction to the new journal topic similar to the news we have, and then have it link to the actual blog section of the member. I also feel color formatting should be allowed in blogs, and maybe even image posting. And lastly allow people to reply to individual blog posts.

Personal Blacklisting
Now, this isn't banning of other members, but blocking them from your profile. Anyone blacklisted from your profile would not be able to post on your profile, and all other previous posts would be hidden. You could have a page dedicated to blacklisted members for easy management.

Often times, I find myself disagreeing with you, but I actually agree with you on all points. I'm sure you're going to get a lot of "lawl use myspace" or "no, this isn't myspace," etc, but I like these ideas and I've always wished we'd have something like this.

Aside from blogs being used as blogs, our fanfic guys could use these to have their fanfics in an organized fashion.

Old school Bungie, born and raised,
In the Septagon is where I spend most of my days.
Relaxin', maxin', posting all cool,
Talking about Halo, life and some school.
Got in one little argument, and the mods got scared,
they said "You're gonna get banned and your member title'll be bare!"

Some great ideas; something on the lines of a personal bio, really.

I don't want Bungie.net turning into the next Facebook or Myspace, though. These ideas are well within the spectrum of reasonable, but it wouldn't be too hard to imagine similar ideas, especially those spawned off of this proposed system, to start pushing, and transgressing, that boundary.

You think it got what it takes to be..?.

God forbid you send me one of those I was checking for cool gamers and saw you messages too, I will scream to the top of my lungs and smash this damn screen/BlackBerry to pieces! You've been warned -_-

That's not a bad idea but I know there'll be a fair share of cons of this idea.

Definitely, didn't think of that. It might even promote me to write a fanfic :P.

While alot of people disagree with me, its really just an effort to find what people will tolerate (mostly by playing devil's advocate in most arguments and debating very harshly for the side I know will lose).

If you can't list any, then don't say there will be. The only con's possible will be avoidable by merely not going to their member page.

Ooh, it'd also act as a nice leverage against rule breaking. Say...blacklistings get your bio taken away/hidden for X days after your account is reinstated?

Maybe, maybe additions/extensions to the personal bio could be added for additional member ranks. Not saying I'm for this exact use of rankings, but I just wanted to pitch the idea.

It could definitely be possible. We could even get "Bio/Journal of the Day" and "member spotlights" after a while. These of course being completely random and checked for non-tolerated material.

Just wanted to say that the Red vs Blue community structure had a very similar concept. It allowed users to maintain their own blog and photo album, and for visitors to comment on specific elements of them. I would encourage that kind of thing, though without the photos. I don't feel that people have earned pictures yet, unfortunately.

Ah, look at the lonely people...

The majority of the Bungie.net community probably wouldn't use a personal blog or comment on other's profiles, I don't think. I do think perhaps a more advanced bio and more customization on the profile page would be in order, though.

Trying something once will increace your chances of success, because you tried it. Try someting twice, and your chances increase yet again - seeing as you've done it. Try something a few thousand times, and your chances of success is exponentially increased; this increase would likely provide success every time

No thank you, and my reasons have already been stated above. As to why someone would say no to these, and that would be the sheer identical concepts of myspace, facebook as well as all those other countless websites of the like. If you want to talk to someone, get them on MSN or AIM, if you don't have either of those, a simple private message works just fine. As for the Blog, use any of the sites listed above, this is a video game forum for christs sake. Maybe a bio, but not a blog. As for the 'Personal Blacklist' bit, we already have that, blocking a user would basically do the exact same thing.

While I do admire the want for change and the ideas as to what to change, I'm not exactly fond of what to change or what to add. Although, in all honesty, I could care less if these were added or not. Since there is always the option of not using any of these options. I can go either way on this, but I am more leaning towards the 'No thanks' side.

LONELY ORPHAN! PLEASE ADOPT!

The comments idea is great, but a shoutbox wouldn't work. Having a seperate shoutbox for every single person would make the site realllllllyyy slow. Instead of having an entire blog, I think just a space with a character limit could be put on your profile, you can change it to whatever you like. It's like the motto you have on Xbox 360, except you can write a lot more.

And with the blacklisting, I don't think it's a good idea to limit what other people can see. But perhaps you could select certain people on your "blacklist", and if they post any comments about you, they don't show up unless you approve of them.

I completely disagree. It might be nice to have, but we don't need it and it will just be a burden on this site and it's staff.

Just like the groups aren't needed? The groups aren't moderated by staff and look how they turned out.

Oh no, you don't tell me anything. There's already cons concerning your idea.

ya, gotta know who you are...

I can definitely see this turning into another myspace. Myspace doesn't have any community coherence. Though new members are welcome here, the larger the group the harder it is to really be a "community," something that dinosaur B.net'ers experienced with the waves of new halo 2'ers and now halo 3. Plus people like my brother who don't even use B.net sport the 7th column logo on their gamertag. It takes the special exclusiveness of really being a member and rolls it in the mud.

I general more 'casual' users coming to chat with their friends and use this site for non-bungie related things would ruin everything.

Halo3Planet, the place for all things Halo 3..

Need help finding skulls, make sure to go here.

These ideas aren't bad by any means, but there really isn't a need for them. If Bungie were to put them in, great, but if they don't, I won't be upset in any way. I think there are other things they should concentrate on, like updating groups, spell check, and various other options and features that have been tossed around this forum.

Con #1: Unnecessary waste of server space.

If you want to hear about unnecessary server space waste, let me tell you about the stupidly long 6-month automatic account deletion concept. Why wait 6 months for an inactive account to get automatically deleted? Sure, some people do leave and come back, but how many people who would lose their accounts would be irritated enough to warrant waiting six months to "make sure" they are inactive. If someone cares enough about their account, I'm quite sure they have friends who can periodically sign on to preserve their account.

Last I heard, it was actually a year before an inactive gets purged, but you'd think that that would be a pretty long time to store those accounts. Six months seems a reasonable time -- it's actually a pretty long period, and you'd think that somebody would manage to find a few seconds to sign into that account during that period if they were really serious about preserving it.

To the OP: Some okay ideas, but I'm not a fan of having blogs on bungie.net. People can always sign up for other blog services such as Blogger or Live Spaces. I'm not too sure about the commenting system -- most of the things that I personally have to say to people, I can say over the public forums or private groups, or if they're not in one of my groups, I can send them a message.

Are you joking? 6 months is fine, what do you suggest? A month? That's unreasonable.

True, me along with about 1 million people would've been gone if that was so.

I just don't see a reason for it. We already have the PM system. Why do you need to have comments publicized?
