I believe Nyuland is the better author, though not to completely say Dietz was horrible. I enjoyed Dietz for his perspective from the Covenant and his side stories of the marines and ODST's (especially the last part w/ the Truth and Reconciliation). Dietz is a bit lackluster though, as stated before, and for some reason I think on more then one occasion he loses sight of gender and states "he" instead of "she".
As for Arguments towards Nyuland and overpowering - well you have to imagine, when you first encounter a new alien, as Master Chief did in Fall of Reach to the Elites, and in First Strike to the Brutes, you don't know it's powers, fighting prowess, intelligence, tactics, etc. You're going on complete whim. You're taking on an unknown opponent that may be near invincible. So of course his first encounters with Elites and Brutes are near death; they're both strong as hell (though Brutes are even stronger), and intelligent. After that first fight, he has some perspective on how they fight, which is why it becomes much easier for him to kill them from then on.
As for when getting hit by plasma it hurts like hell; Yea well, it would. Sure they had their shields, but think how fast your shields go down when you're under a barrage of plasma during legendary mode or of the sort. Of course it's also the Disposition that you need to make it more interesting, a novel. How interesting is it if he really is invincible and never suffers some pain? It isn't. Not really, not to most people.
Anyway, so I'd like Nyuland to do the Halo 2 book though for some reason I have a feeling they might let Dietz, who knows.
