Yes, I am a hypocrite, and I'm sorry. I really do mean well, but I'm not running on all cylinders.

Everytime someone buys a copy of Halo 2 Vista, a puppy dies.

I bought an X-Fi sound card today. Works fine. But when MP3 sent me a voice message and I tried to play it back, H2V says no "voice playback device" is installed. What the hay?

lollerskates! Vista does something weird with sound cards... won't let you use them. Google it.
There's a lot of elaborate workarounds, one called Alchemy which, I think, as an x-fi user you're allowed to download for free from creative after registering. but it's not going to help as much as advertised. Bummer because my soundcard comes right after my mouse and my video card as my secret weapon of choice (footsteps and framerates for the win) which was one of the small reasons I didn't go to vista.

Bad luck man. One more point for the Vistanators!

Ah. I took a look at Alchemy and it appears to be kind of like Fraps, only for sound. I'll look into it later. Thanks, Ryanman!

ah yw man. even with my pessimistic junk going around, I specifically remember some utility that lets you use soundcards in Vista. I don't remember what exactly it was but if I do remember it I'll pm you or something.

Is it set as default in Windows Vista? If it is, did you check the LIVE Guide? Open the guide, go to Personal Settings --> Voice and see if it is there? If it is not, try looking over at the h2vista.net forums and posting a thread.

Aha! Turns out H2V was trying to use the old SB Live card I replaced. I changed the input and output device to the X-Fi and now it works fine. Thanks much :)
