I would just like to express this, since I know that here, people will listen, and not go "ZOMG U SUXZORS HALO 3 IS OUT PLAY THAT LEAVE HALO 1 AND GET A LIFE!" so yeah, i find that Halo Combat Evolved truly is a classic. I can go back to it again, and again, and again, and never get tired of it. there are always new experiences in campaign, (legendary, of course) and i find that going back to the weapons is really good. the halo 1 weapons were the best and most balanced of them all. and before anyone starts -blam!-ing about the overpowered pistol, bungie meant it to be that way, and, you know, it actually works. so yeah. also, even though i can only play halo 1 multiplayer on pc, going back and revisiting the maps even by myself, doing to occasional launch, really brings back the good times. halo 1 is truly a legacy, and i commend bungie for making it so. does anyone agree with me? does anyone still live the dream?

Halo1 is a classic that is aging beautifully. Sure the graphics aren't the greatest anymore but the artistic direction and style is faultless and beautiful. Amazing amazing game.

Halo1> Halo3 > Halo2 definitely

Great game then and a great game now. I might not be the most original but it pulled off being fun to play over and over again. I still get flak from my friends about memorizing the levels.

Halo is definetly a classic. I hate playing though because it brings back too many good memories, just starting up the game and going to the title screen makes me remember the good old days and makes me sad : (

Halo is a classic. I feel it is the only game worthy of the name "Halo". Halo 1 was near perfection and thus deserves recognition for it, Halo 2 was garbage, and Halo 3 is overrated. Its not bad, just not good enough. In ten years I will still be playing Halo 1, while I will probably stop playing Halo 3 when SSBB comes out.

I thought it was good, but it's not like it was Game of the Year worthy in my opinion.

It has definitely attained classic status. As long as I can play games, I will play halo. Its up there with the original super smash, and golden eye to name a few.

Absolutely, without question, Halo is a classic. Every genre has its monumental game that defines the genre for years to come. The game that is near-impossible to oust, regardless of how dated it may be. For RTS, there is StarCraft. For Platformers, there is Super Mario 64. For Adventure, there is Zelda: Ocarina of Time. For Kart Racing, there is Mario Kart 64. And for FPS, there is Halo: Combat Evolved. Plain and simple. One day, there may be a game that redefines the FPS genre, but I haven't seen anything even close yet. Given, there have been some excellent games, but none of them have that unmistakable yet almost unattainable aspect that make them truly legendary. Pardon the pun.

Fixed. :)

Although Halo is certainly legendary in the gaming industry, the game itself and the immense hype and popularity which clings to it like a nasty, nasty parasitic alien is unproportional. Aside from the ability to throw grenades without equipping them, along with the recharging health (as in energy shields), there was nothing really innovative about the game that nobody had ever seen before, and this goes especially true for the sequels. It was simply a good shooter that pulled a bunch of good, albeit not new, concepts together. Solid, respectable, engaging, and fun, yes. Innovative, new, revolutionary? I think it lacks in that department. In my opinion, there are more shooters that are more deserving of such a "monumental" status, which were not only just as fun but even added something newer and unique that other games would improve upon to add to the experience positively.

In terms of all FPSes, Halo didn't really do anything revolutionary. I would agree that it pulled a lot of good concepts together. While that's not revolutionary, I haven't seen other games, especially of the era, pull together these concepts as effectively, and I still think it was revolutionary for console FPSes. Halo, and GoldenEye before it, made console FPSes matter. Previously there were mostly sub-par PC ports. It was a solid FPS that was released for a console first, and even had LAN support. I would agree that there are games that are more monumental on the PC, but I don't personally think they're as fun. That is of course personal preference. I actually think Halo may have been a fluke; if they had had more time to work on it, it probably wouldn't be as fun. Their map design is excellent, and I like the hybrid health system (recharging shields without recharging health), but it has an excellent unpolished feel that was probably never intended.

Love you Bungie!
Still playing Halo1 Custom Edition!

it'll be a classic for many years to come... Although it's trip nears end ( Halo PC and Halo Custom population have shrunk to a ridiculous amount), it's lifespan will be extended by the fact H2V failed horribly. As for the Xbox version, still awesome to play Coop on it.

I couldn't agree more. Though I've always appreciated Half-Life for what it is, I've honestly had more fun playing Halo. Combat Evolved really was just a series of good mistakes, albeit unpolished for a unique feel. I always found it amusing that your legs don't move while you're throwing a grenade.

Totally agreed. Thats why I wear the Mark V helmet in Halo 3 multiplayer. That helmet brings back a lot of great memories....

Anyways I think Halo:CE will always be a classic. It changed the way FPS games were made.

If leonadrdo da vinci was around still, I bet he would be so amazed at what todays artists can do..movable interactive art.

HALO C.E. is the only reason I have an x box. The story line is enthralling and immersive. And the A.I. is wonderfull.

If he were still around, I bet he'd be a pretty good gamer, and I think he'd prefer Halo: CE to the rest of the trilogy.

Become the hunter.

Halo is awesome because it had everything that made a great FPS, not because it was a radically different game concept.

And it's your connection that's slower than turtle sex.

In........................................................Out .

Halo 1 is truly an excellent game that deserves to be remembered as a classic. It's still pretty fun to this day.

Not saying that Halo 2 and 3 aren't great games, just that they don't really fit the bill for a classic label like Halo does, at least in my opinion.

I quite agree that Halo 1 (PC) is the bomb, but I've only been playing it becouse my 360 is broken, and Im waiting for it back, Halo 1 was way better than halo 2 and Halo 3 (in my opinion) is just over Halo 1

I love the less cartoon-like artstyle for the covenent
the realistic detail
It combined everything I love about the original and Halo 2

Halo 1 was still a treasure for me, half of the time I could have spent playing halo 2 I played Halo 1 for the first time and was instantly hooked.

And that is why I play it today (Except for the reason of my 360 being gone) It should be remembered as a classic, I acctually beleive they all should.

But to alter this a lil Halo 3 slightly> Halo 1 way> Halo 2= Still pretty good

Nothing innovative? Umm, what about vehicles in an FPS that controlled well and weren't overpowered? What about spawning with a decent weapon so that it didn't just come down to who had the bigger gun? What about fighting aliens that had depth and background? What about a deeply engaging story? What about weapons that have the classic "human" feel combined with alien weapons, with neither severely owning the other? What about oddball? What about cooperative play on a console FPS? What about an FPS that combined an awesome campaign with even better multiplayer in a time when most FPS's are choosing one or the other? What about the golden triangle of Halo (guns, grenades, melee), and each of them being equally important to master? And most of all, what about Blood Gulch???

ok...Blood Gulch wasn't innovative.........but still, nobody's beaten it.

  • 01.22.2008 3:09 AM PDT

What about thew story??? Not many games had a good story back then. Not many games have a good story now. To be honest, I only know a few. Halo, Mass Effect, hm........ Oh yeah, Need For Speed. <------------------- joke
