Taxes do nothing to affect the share of wealth, since taxes are only applied to income.

So that's not even a part of the conversation at all, so it's pointless talking about it....

"for a "best" moral to exist, there must exist the "best" moral base. If the base of morality varies from location to location, culture to culture...then there can't be an absolute moral..

I would love to hear from mods about bumping. We all know that bumping is against the rules. Lukems makes the following remarks about bumping in a sticky found in the Optimatch forum:

Bumping is illegal. Breaking this law has high consequences. Such as but not limited to: assignation by ninja, hippo licking, and/or complete forum thread annihilation. Or we will most likely just lock your topic. Don't bump!

Bumping is clearly a no-no. I would like to know how mods determine whether a post is guilty of bumping or not. Can any of the mods please make this more clear for us? I have been lucky enough to have a mod answer some of my specific questions about bumping, but I suspect that we will all be better off if everyone understands exactly how bumping-related decisions are made. Here are some questions that I hope will lead to answers that will make this matter less vague:

Within how much time must a post be made to avoid being considered a bump?

How far back (in terms of pages back from the front page) may we look to find threads and post on them and do so without being guilty of bumping?

If a thread has been inactive for some time and is no longer on the first page, are bnet users encouraged to contact mods to seek approval to duplicate threads to make the topics active once again?

I would also like to hear what bnet users have to say about bumping. I have pretty flimsy bumping intuitions, so I would love to learn what criteria you guys use when you consider whether posts are bumps. People in the forums have recently made many accusations toward posts that they consider bumping, and many defenses of posts have been made claiming that posts are not instances of bumping. I would love to know if there is a bnet industry standard way of making bumping judgments.

A bump is clearly layed out. If the user posts in a row and it says either:
A) Nothing new
B) "Bump", or some form of it.

It's pretty straightforward. Nothing hard to grasp.

Grr, typing. I had to edit this post 3 times. Maybe I should take a break.

Bump: Repetitive posting to push your topic up to the top of the forums page.

Bump 2: Spamming a topic to push it up to the top of the forums page even if it isn't yours.

Both of which require you to consecutively post. For less bumps I recommend moderators or zit cream.

Bump is a term used when a member posts a reply to their thread or another thread without the intention of contributing to the discussion topic, but instead to move it back to the top of the forum listing in order to attract others by making it more visible when browsing. A bump may also consist of posting when unnecessary; thus meaning you have the opportunity to edit a previous post in the thread because you did not exceed the maximum character limit.

If posting from a thread on the second page is bumping, everybody who has ever posted in the Halo 3, or the Halo 3 beta forums has probably bumped (especially during peak activity)... I doubt thats bumping if its a constructive reply.

But yeah, how far back is "Necroposting"?

I've always thought of "Necroposting" as bring back really old topics without a specific purpose. Like just posting to bring it back from the dead, not to continue the conversation. If you're continuing the argument/discussion I'm sure that it is okay. I guess you can think of it as bumping a really old thread.

There's also the whole mess when people will bump up a topic that was on page 30 and 2 months old.

Personally, I'd say if it's off the forum page and more than a day old. (Obviously some forums move slower than others.)

It all depends on HOW you 'revive' a thread. If you really have something to say, fine, but people who revive a week old thread to say "lol" should be shot. Twice.

Politely.

This is bumping.

It's also in violation of another rule, double posting. Well in this case, triple.
Not really, since he actually contributed to the topic rather than bumping it just because.

Negative. Bumping is bumping, the conversation obviously died days ago. Yes it may be "smart bumping" but it's still against the rules.
Ah, I did not look at the dates. It is a little strange.

If you have a problem with someone though, don't bring it into a conversation, just PM a ninja about it.

I consider bumping posting in a thread after atleast 24 hours of inactivity, or posting twice in a row with more than a 12 hour delay.
Weird, so bumping is posting in a thread too soon or too late?

Well of course I PM'd a moderator about it. I was just providing the only example of bumping I have seen on these forums lately and I did find it a tad ironic. (lol)

I'm sorry if it came across as me trying to attack the OP or something.. Should I edit my posts?
Nah, I don't think you have to. It is ironic though.

Oh and it seems everyone has forgotten what "Bump" really stands for, "Bring Up My Post" It's clearly against "forum law" since it's a cheap way to get your thread seen even though it is dead. It's also a way to get a high post count sometimes in other forums.

When using the reveal tool to show the posts of banned members, I don't see any bumping. I see replies and counter replies.

That is one of the few downsides to our practice of hiding the posts of blacklisted members, without quoting, what was a discussion can appear to be a monologue. I get lots of reports of bumping in the file forums, but when I use "reveal" I sometimes see that the 5 posts in a row by the OP, were actually individual replies to comments made by members who were blacklisted elsewhere.

It's an easy mistake to make, especially without having the tools to see past the veil.

This is why I think it would be nice to have even one extra line break or something just to indicate that a user had posted there previously. Especially now, with the report as spam feature.

Amen, the logistical troll is gone

Coming from a person with a 2-day old account...I find that rather ironic. At least Ses has the decency not to make ALT accounts even though there is one impersonating him in Optimatch right now.

Bumping seems to account for most of the pointless threads that survive on the front page. People don't seem to like it when the community doesn't find what they have to say to be interesting or worthy of a response. One of my posts is dying right now, and yeah, it stinks, I would like more feedback. But a lot of people can't stand to see their posts sink into dreaded page 2 territoty. The thing that gets me is how many people are blatant about bumping.

  • 01.10.2008 7:33 AM PDT

I probably missed it somewhere but I thought only perma-banned accounts had their posts hidden. Sometimes it is confusing when a banned members posts are hidden, especially when trying to determine why they were banned.
