The End

‘The conscious is cancerous if allowed to linger’

"Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there."

The word "bastard" is in my opinion a word which should be profanity. Words like ass followed by hole are profanity and I think are less severe. Please could somebody clarify why b******d is acceptable because I think don't think it should be. Post your thoughts.

Thanks

I don't think any words themselves are bad, it is the context they are used in that makes them bad. As far as the word in question here, I really don't think of it as bad as any of the other swear words out there. Profanity is far down on my list of things I take offense to. There are worse things in the world to be offended by. They could block it or leave it open, it wouldn't matter to me, I try to maintain some decency when I post, and try to stay away from words that people may find offensive

People get too easily offended these days. However, this site has an M for Mature rating, as dictated on the lower right of the page. Although I've get to see any 'Blood and Gore' or 'Violence' on this site as of yet, Mild Language is certainly covered. Unless ofcourse, that rating doesn't apply to this site, in which case, why the hell is it on here?

Mourne not your comrades who must dwell / too strong to strive -

I think the main reason that it isn't censored is that it really isn't used that often as an insult. However, another reason is that "bastard" has a perfectly valid definition of "a child born out of wedlock".

It is also a type of sword (another name for the longsword) and and type of wood file, among other things.

It also meshes with the current cesorship standards for television. "Bastard" typically is not censored, while compound words (e.g., "***hole") are.

Are you reading this!?

Pffft, it's pretty common language. I feel it's about as insulting as 'Jerk' or 'Idiot'

I think "twat" should be profanity.

You missed the point like Vader missed the banshee, your whole argument is covered in bees.
Stop sending me group invites -blam!-s!

Wanking isn't a profanity but M-Bation is, I find that funny. If they ban Bastard I will start calling people 'love child(ren)'.

You can make this argument for any curse word, since all of them are taken from a non-offensive background such as farming in most cases. The F word was the term for planting seeds.

Emphasis on the word was.

Because it isn't profane. In fact, none of the words restricted on this site are per se; that characterization is only relevant in the context of social usage. If a child is a bastard, how is that profane? If -- -blam!-! -- I hit my toe, how is that profane? Is isn't. You're just a prude.

One can only stand to see strings of swear words so often (perfunctorily, without contributing to the message -- and quite obviously, this only diminishes their impact). But you don't see bastard being overused as a vapid exclamative so much as -blam!- and -blam!- and the like. Indeed, the very fact that it doesn't appear often though it isn't blammed indicates that people just don't use it, disparagingly or emphatically or otherwise. I think the blam filter acts as more of a bland filter than as a defense for the virgin eyes and fragile feelings from socially constructed sequences of letters.

Strange evolution how people have come to believe
That we are it's greatest achievement

I agree with the OP. I would also like to add the following phrases to the -blam!- filter:

- Golly Gee
- Gosh darnit
- Holy Moly
- heck
- shoot

That would be great. I could then surf Bungie.net without fear of being offended.

Dude, watch your mouth.

I personally love swear words, they make threads and posts more colorful and funny. If you're going to protest a word that doesn't belong on the forums, I'd go with AIDS. To me that's much more offensive because no one uses the word AIDS for intelligent or interesting discussions. They only use it to flame and offend, i.e. "this thread has AIDS, you have AIDS, etc."

Some people may get so riled up over this darned usage, they may start spazzing out!

(Sorry!)

You're a sick bastard. Oops!

I wasn't suggesting the removal of AIDS, I was giving Tom T a word that is way more offensive than bastard to put his complaint into context.

Post your thoughts.

But what if my bastard thoughts are nothing but an unceasing monologue of vile and lewd obscenities, which I choose not to say? God forbid -- what if the blam filter is inhibitive of expressing one's true thoughts? Oh my god, they're controlling our minds! It's a conspiracy! The Superbounces....oh, it all makes sense now.

Okay guys, I thank you for your sarcasm, in fact I think I'll get on my knees and shine your shoes and cook you a nice big meal with steaming roast potatoes and a lovely cut of fresh meat to sink into.

No.

Please keep at least semi-mature, I am trying to get feedback on why you think either way if it should be blammed or not. I don't really have my mind conclusively decided and would appreciate some intelligent comments to clarify the method behind the blam filter.

Now about that dinner . . .

You've already gotten a few thoughts on the matter -- but why don't you think bastard is acceptable? Or why don't you feel so, if that's more appropriate?

Golly comes from an ancient Sumarian term meaning "to castrate." My mother calls me Gee. I am offended.
I am unaware what being darned is. I fear the unknown. I am offended.
Implying that Moly is in any way divine is deeply offensive to my religious beliefs. I am offended.
Heck is clearly meant in reference to hell. Hell has fire. I hate fire. I am offended.
How about don't shoot. Jerk. Getting shot hurts. Your callousness is troubling. I am offended.

You Bastard.

Bungie has actually been pretty liberal IMO about which words they -blam-. Remember, up until a year or so ago, people were still using the word g'ay. Bungie only blammed that word because members were using it irresponsibly and to flame. So the track record shows that until we can no longer use an inflammatory word in the proper context, it will stay around. Which is the right call.

Sorry Tom, but bastard is just not that offensive of a word. It's not a word people abuse and it's still a word people use to be humorous.

Let's be honest, the spam filter is what it is and despite a few awkward rules - the inability to say blímey for instance - it's not really a problem for most. I don't think Achronos is really interested in getting bogged down in ranking these "taboo" words in order of "offensiveness". Live and let be?
