It's not talking about it, it's the fact that these damn threads (pardon my language) are made 10 times a day.

It's annoying :-/

*edit*

What part of you can't unlock it and must have Bungie give it to you is so hard for people to understand? We don't need threads about recon armor anymore. I dunno, it's just aggrevating seeing the word "recon" in a thread title then the OP saying "how do i unlock it?"

Sup Iceman,,, very true, and recon threads are not allowed, you know that OP and you know this will probably get locked.

(rubs chin)Hmmmm.... so because people are talkng about something that others don't like listening to, Bungie bans the topic.

I guess, like RECON ARMOR, I don't see how forbidding it prevents people from talking/wanting it.

Yes, I do, and I have no problem with that, and I'm sure my token protest will be dully noted by a B.NET Forum mod, and shoved to the back corner of the, "we don't really care" pile.

Again, I was curious, and was also interested to see if some actual thought was put into this rule or if it simply enacted, then mindlessly parroted by forum members.

In the future, I will refer to RECON ARMOR as, "The Armor that must not be Named" as I did in the end of the first post.

No, there was a massive thread on "unlocking the secret behind the recon armor" (or something like that) that was huge and thousands of replies and whatnot.

Then lukems comes in and says (criptically) you can't unlock it. Of course, people took his words and tried to twist them into "we can unlock it!"

Eventually too many threads were created and it became spam. Recon threads would literally be created 10 times a day.

The admins, mods, (and sensible people) told those who insisted that Recon can be unlocked that it can't, yet threads continued to litter the forums. Thus, mods are notified to lock Recon threads because it's a dead horse topic.

I guess, like RECON ARMOR, I don't see how forbidding it prevents people from talking/wanting it.

But what's there to discuss? We can't have it unless we earn it........I don't see how you can make a discussion thread on something that has to be earned. And there's a sticky that details the Recon situation too.

S'up eviltedi :-)

The amount of recon threads resulted into a huge amount of spam, that's what all of them were. They filled up the entire first page and beyond. All actual worthy threads were pushed aside.
They contributed nothing, the same thing was asked over and over again till people got sick of it, and wanted a solution to the ruining of the forums. The solution? No more recon threads.

Ahhhhhh... now that makes a little bit of sense, I guess. However, I have already found this thread to be quite constructive.

But what's there to discuss?

So far:

1. The psychological ramifications of forbidding a topic of discussion, and its resultants (this thread for one).
2. The moral question, "Do good people obey bad laws?" This is probably a bit academic for this forum, but I find both of your answers, both in content, context and tone, to be very interesting and actually worth the post itself.

We can't have it unless we earn it........

Would that not make the Armor that Must Not be Named worth discussing, especially as it is doled out as a "reward" by the Bungie Staff for f'eats de increable?

I don't see how you can make a discussion thread on something that has to be earned. And there's a sticky that details the Recon situation too.

True enough, I guess.

Ah-ha. Now this I can understand, market demands/fulfillment based upon the changing desires of the consumer.

Fair Enough.

Why? I don't want Recon Armor. I don't care about Recon Armor.

I just think this is a pretty stupid rule, is all. Why is talking about RECON ARMOR so harmful to the health of this forum? Who is hurt? Who is insulted by me mentioning RECON ARMOR?

---------------------------------------------
I understand this is Bungie's private forum, and I know their rules are their rules, and I understand the risk of willfully breaking the rules of my host in his house, but I honestly would like a serious answer to my question:
---------------------------------------------

Why is talking about Recon Armor such an egregious offense that it results in thread locking / disciplinary action? Shall I start speaking about Recon in NewsSpeak a la 1984,

To not speak about the Armor that must not be named is double-plus good!

  • 01.14.2008 3:35 AM PDT

I guess I pretty much have to agree with most of the things said here. If they made it for themselves let them have it. it's not like you spawn with a power weapon for having the suit.

And the biggest reason is that it's psychological most of the kids, teenagers, and just about everyone else out there wants the recon, well there not gonna get it. and the only reason they want it so bad is because they can't have it. if it was something you unlocked normally no one would care this much.

Anybody remember how hard people went out of the way for Hayabusa at first and now recon. If anyone from bungie sees this do me and a few guys here a favor. Go make a Viking helmet or something and use that and see what I mean everyone will go nuts and change the subject to how can we be vikings.

It was a good discussion guys and it will probably get locked maybe some people will wise up and stop ruining the possibility of some people being rewarded for good things.

  • 01.14.2008 3:58 AM PDT

I guess I don't see what the big deal about this armor is, it has to be one of those things that people want simply because they can't have it. I would rather have the head on fire than the recon armor. People can't have it, or unlock it, so what is there to discuss about it?

One of the worst thing about recon threads, was how people responded to it; "Use the search feature!", "Not another one!", etc.
people may not have realized it (but they should have), but every time they responded, it bumped another Recon thread back on top, a big reason why the no-recon-rule was put into place.

I'm not gonna lie, I'm guilty of bumping a couple recon threads. But I say something like "you can't unlock it, it's for Bungie to distribute to who they want." Normally because people respond with "3 2 1 locked" and "i hear the ninjas coming" and that doesn't answer the guy's question.

Regardless, yeah I've bumped a couple of threads. But as annoying as those threads are, it's still a question and I sometimes feel people are generally curious about it. But those blatant threads that just say "wtf bungie why can't we have it," I stay faaar away from lol. I just report those as spam and watch the flames from a safe place.

I get sick of seeing things like this all the time:

Use the search feature.
Here we go again!!, etc.
Don't like it? Gtfo and don't play it.

It's just a worthless thing to post that adds nothing to the conversation, and is like a free bump for the TC.

Agreed.

Also....

"I hear ninjas coming!"

"in before lock" (it's back)

"do I smell the banhammer?"

Like the first couple times you see posts like this it's not a big deal, but eventually it becomes an eyesore when every bad thread (and even the ones that aren't in violation of a rule and are just a bit edgy) are littered with them because people think it's funny.

Especially the "don't like it don't play it" bit. I can't stand that one.

i was told that if you send Recon Number 54 a friend request on XBL you get the recon armor unlocked for you. and if it doesn't work the first time, just keep doing it until it does.

recon threads are pointless and they take away from the other worthwhile threads. they were outlawed because they were all spam and everything that could be discussed about it has been already.

Strange evolution how people have come to believe
That we are it's greatest achievement
We're barely, we're just a collection of cells
Overrating themselves

Can we add threads asking why the "Recon Rule" is in effect to the list of banned topics?

The threads asking why we can t discuss recon are getting as numerous as the original "Can I has recon?" threads.

Taxes do nothing to affect the share of wealth, since taxes are only applied to income.

So that's not even a part of the conversation at all, so it's pointless talking about it....

"for a "best" moral to exist, there must exist the "best" moral base. If the base of morality varies from location to location, culture to culture...then there can't be an absolute moral..

what do you hope to accomplish by starting this thread?

there were entirely too many threads dedicated to this topic, so they told us that they did not want to see any more. this is a simple rule and i cannot see how it harms anyone in particular or the forums in general.

Not all recon threads get locked their was that one in the halo 3 forum where the guy made a topic called "Recon is everywhere" photo-shop fun.
It was quite interesting to see what people came up with.
The majority of threads get locked due to these stereotypical replies,
In before lock
No recon for you
Use the search button and " I can has" is excessively overused.
