I think it's kinda like in Splinter Cell PT where if you grab a mercenary from behind you can talk to him...just in Halo 2 you can talk if you are in a certain radius of the player.

I have a feeling it'll be a toggle thing. You can talk to your team from any point on the map no matter where you are. But the proximity thing would be cool if you could turn it on (like Chief turning on his external communicators) right before you kill someone, or even to scare them, like if you're invisible and you flip it on and say something. I like the idea, and if implemented like this wouldnt affect gameplay for fear of giving away your position or tactics. And you could use the same team button they already have on the headset setup for other games like Mech Assault.

OK, let me break it down for everyone. Have you ever played a little XBL game called Moto GP? Well, in that game (while racing motorcycles for those that didn't know) whenever you get close to someone you can speak into the headset and he will hear you. If you leave him in the dust, he can't. Pretty much, (I'm guessing, but it's really good guesses) it will be the same thing... EXCEPT, your team will always be able to hear you. The way it was explained in the update it seems as if you can speak to the enemy if they are nearby. Remember the part where he says that you can call the attention of the enemy to distract him (or something like that)? Maybe you have to hold a button in to speak to the enemy, maybe you don't. Also, it seems reasonable that if you were able to speak to the enemy all the time, it would only be on FFA games, because it would suck BIG TIME if the enemy can hear your plans during a CTF game. That make any sense? Or should I explain again when I'm a little bit more sober... which should be sometime next week....

lol Proximity Voice is very simple and yet...I was beginning to think if anyone would ever putt that into a game! It’s all about voice communication on Xbox Live! In Halo 2, when you speak on you’re communicator over at Xbox Live, only you’re teammates will hear you!

But if you get to close to a foe he will be able to ear what you’re saying too! Then you can taunt him…or beg for you’re life…or even spy you’re enemies!!!

With that said I hope I didn’t managed to get you even more anxious that you already were (I am;)

Hope it helped.

That sounds right....IF it's a TEAM game.
In a game of Slayer, for example, you'll be able to hear no one until they pop up behind you and crack the butt of a shotgun against your head like it's an egg....

the voice proximity just wouldn't make sense, since in the books...

I hate to break it to you Vizzer but developers hardly ever do it "by the book" (no pun intended). If they discover something as cool as proximity voice communication (for everyone, team members included) and implement it in the face of blatent "universal facts" (ie. "all Spartan warriors are known to be linked by voice communicators") then they will, whether it goes against every fact put into the Halo Universe or not.

This could be by mistake, or design... it's really up to (or fault of) the developer, because, in fact, it is their world, they may shape it in whatever way they want. You never know, they could write a whole chapter telling the story of how a giant EMP wave used by the covenant wiped all modern communication nets explaining the reason why people now have to talk face-to-face... or something. They could write any number of excuses to implement what they want...

Maybe the technology they, the developers, are dealing with is limited, maybe only people in proximity can hear, and there is no way around it. Rather then scrap this idea entirely, they put it in...

"get it?"

But I do agree, that would kinda suck... but at the same time rule! Imagine the things you could do? Taunting your enemies would only be the beginning.

You could lure away people from the base with your taunts, then set up an ambush, the enemy rounds the corner only to look around confused searching for his target, you launch from your hidden perch up high, flinging your body. As you descend upon your enemy you scream your war cry... "SPOOOOOOON!" smashing your battle rifle into the back of your enemies skull with a satisfying bone crunching thud, his lifeless body crumples to the ground, his body twitches slightly as the last brain wave fires off, you crouch down on your haunches close to what's left of his ear and whisper "You really should have stayed in base." The last thing the player hears before he's respawned back into his base is a muffled chuckle... awesome!

Whatever the case may be though, it'll be cool.

I think that when you talk your voice will be broadcast to nearby team and enemy players in the same way as normal sound so the radius would be quite small.

Think about it, this way different squads in a team would talk to each other and only each other just like in real life. Because they're next to each other and fighting together.

However when you press a button (possibly white) you should engage on a team radio. This acts just like normal live communication. On a free for all game it would be an "everybody" chanell.

So, when your running around you'll be able to talk to team members and foes alike who are close to you. if you have important messages then you would press a button and talk to your team. Everyones radio would be listening out for this.

This is an ideal solution for getting rid of the mayhem a 8 way chat can sometimes be. It also means relevent tacitcal discussion is kept to nearby players and only general team messages such as pushing forward, in need of warthog transport, under fire somewhere etc would be in the team chat.

Thats my interpretation anyway.

I have no idea what proximity voice will turn out to be, but I know they won't go contrary to the novels.

This isn't because they want to follow the storyline the novels set, on the contrary, Eric Nylund (who is a great author, wrote FoR and FS) and William Dietz (OK author, wrote TF) both recieved a "writer's bible" which all major television productions use. It basically outlines what can happen and what can't, who can die and who can't, and what storyline you need to go with. It also contains everything about the plot (including that plot twist!).

The writer's bible would have told them if proximity voice was going to be used, and if it was, they would have included it in the books. If they do include it contrary to what one of the books said, I'm sure they'll invent some kind of reason as to why it happens. Bungie simply won't go against what has been previously established.

Besides, that thing about enemies near you can pick your voice out? I think that if they include that, it'll be called freq piracy of something where they determine your frequency and scrambler information. Maybe they'll even include landlines for secure communication (I doubt they will).

Anyways, however this turns out, it'll make sense and I'll love it.
