Subject: Locked Threads

Ehh, I used to have a sig, then I stopped posting here for a long time and it sorta outdated itself, so know I'm stuck with this till I actually start posting again and comeup with something interesting to say.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to put this, but I'm posting it here because it mostly affects the slow moving sections of the forum like Bungie Community.

Would it be possible to bump locked threads off of the first page of the forum; currently, there's 6 locked threads on the front page of Community, and there has been for about a day; when added to the stickies, there's almost no threads of worth (and I'm not saying stickies are worthless, its just once you've read them once, your pretty much done with them - but they're great for new members). By moving them off the front page, threads with something important to say can have a chance of surviving.

A tosser is the same as a wanker. To toss oneself off is to fondle the trouser weasel.

Maybe these locked threads should be deleted.

Bump? No.

Reply to and contribute to the discussion? Absolutely.

A thread is locked because it has/had problems. A thread on page 2 is there because it doesn't have activity.

Bumping is a poor substitute for replies. And why it is against the rules.
Does he not mean that the locked thread should automatically be moved a couple of pages back? I don't think he means that we should bump the better threads up.

I don't know of a way to "move something to page 2" when the forum is sorted by last activity.

And for a member who asked, we don't delete them because we typically send warnings that include a link to the locked thread. This allows the member to see what thread they got warned for, and that it was locked/moved. If we deleted, then the "evidence" would be gone.

But then again, we go back to the point of this thread; half of Bungie.net Community forum first page are locked threads, a quarter are threads soon to be locked and the rest is divided into stickies and useful threads.

Of course, this is not on a daily basis, but it's been like this for a while now.

Sorry for using the word bump somewhat confusingly in my first post, but I couldn't think of a better way to describe what I meant.

But thanks anyway for explaining why it isn't done at the moment; maybe it is something that could be added to the forum in the future? I know that it's sorted on latest activity, but stickies are always on the front page, so I thought there might be a way to sort of 'ban' something from the front page.

In my experience, the majority of locked threads are either due to bickering amongst the thread contributors or the thread is a repeat. There are also an awful lot threads posted in the wrong forum (which is something we need to think about solving).

Also, remember that moderators can't increase the quality of threads; only moderate their content.

In regards to stickies, while i agree that stickies shouldn't take up the space other threads could take, i fear that the contents of those important threads wouldn't be read by as many people due to the prolonged process of obtaining that content*.

*The most likely solution would be to create a stickied thread which acted as a hub for other important threads. While this takes up little space, it also means that it's another click and diversion the user has to make and I feel that that would be a problem.

What if every time you said "New Topic", it brought up a unique "notice" for that forum, telling you what this forum is for. This would require the user to checkmark a box "I agree and understand" then press 'Continue" to begin typing a new thread up.

This might help a LOT. Especially for going "THIS IS NOT A HALO FORUM, POST ALL HALO 3 RELATED THREADS IN THE HALO 3 FORUM".

That kind of thing. Is it possible? It'd be awesome.

I have aboslutely no problem with stickies; they are of great use to new members, and are a good source of information on all things Bungie; I just wish there was some way for the remaining part of the page to be for other useful threads - which does not include another request for that-about-which-we-cannot-speak, spam, or any other type of thread which is locked the instant a Ninja spots it. This isn't of any real importance on, say, the Halo 3 forum, where threads only last on the front page for about a minute without a reply; but for the Community forum, which has very few visitors compared to others, this can result in the front page having almost no threads that aren't locked - and they can stay there for a long time.

Zag's idea would be very helpful!

and would also result in the complete destruction of the universe by bungie.net users who, in their rage, have invoked the power of Megatron.

I like the idea, but the information would have to be displayed in a way that was non intrusive.

aside from the destruction of the universe, i agree with zag.

How about a list for each forum's rules down by where the url instructions and stuff are?

Everytime I click "New topic?" No thanks. It'd be extremely annoying and I would most likely just press the "agree" button without reading anything. I'm sure others would as well.

I can come up with an outline of a ton of topics that are supposed to go in every forum if you guys like.

I've seen a ton of threads in the past few days where the user goes "i don't know where to put this but, ............"

The threads of interest are good but are limited to "hot" topics

Maybe you make too much new topics ? w/e. It is meant for people not like us considerate members. So of course you won't find it useful.
