I recently downloaded Halo Custom Edition and Halo Editing Kit. Halo CE works great, but I had a problem with HEK. In the beginning of the tutorial for HEK that came with the installation, it said that I would need some programs that didn't come with the installation. One of these was 3ds Max. I had never heard of it before, so I went on over to Amazon to check it out. I searched for it and it came up with 1 copy, used, for $500. I kid you not.

I was wondering if any one else had problems with this or knows if 3ds Max is neccesary in order to run HEK. I didn't know I would need this when I downloaded HEK. Please somebody clear this up for me.

-S

There is now a plugin that allows people to use gMax, 3d Studio Max's free cousin, in 3dSM's place. Go to http://www.cortana.org for more info.

Thank you very much. All of this HEK stuff can get pretty confusing. I am downloading gmax now.

umm, an even better place would be the official thread at http://gbxforums.gearboxsoftware.com/ubbthreads.php . Search Chimp 1.5 for it. Now a question for people... why doesnt anybody else ever suggest going to the GBX forums, i mean like they made the game, and most peeps on their forums are hardcore (or at least know what the hell they are doin)

A word of caution; if you've never used a 3D editor before (like me) gmax can be a bit confusing at the start. Follow the HEK tutorial and the tutorial video on cortana.org closely at the start (I didn't, and it set me back two weeks trying to untangle what I did wrong) and be prepared to make a lot of mistakes.

But it's worth it in the end.

AAAAAAGH! Please help! I know absolutely nothing about all this technical jargon! Is there a way for me to just make a map without having to learn computer code, or should I just give up? Also, I'm having no luck finding that free version of the map software thingy program... ::sigh:: can someone just list what I need, and include links to the places where we can get it?

ok first, there is no coding stuff (however, u do need to use command prompt). As well, go to http://www.discreet.com and go under the product tab to G-Max. Al info will be there. As well, I still highly suggest going to the gearbox forums. Most of these questions have already been answered there.

EDIT-
Since im feeling nice today, here is the exact link to the G-Max http://www.discreet.com/products/gmax/

That and a copy of CHIMP, an export tool to take the completed 3D model and convert it into a format that Tool will recognise. It's available over in the Gearbox forums, which are far better set up to handle HEK questions.

Here's the link to Baka's announcement for version 1.5 of CHIMP.

Oh, and you also need gobs of talent and patience. And time.

-- Steve got his first level to compile, but has to work on it a LOT more when he gets the time and patience.

Addition: You also need a graphics program that makes .tif image files, to do the 2D graphics such as the ground plan for your map.

You can always make your models in another program and convert them to 3dsmax if you want.

Yeah. they didn't really make all of this easy. I mean, I've finally got gmax downloaded, but when I tried to register for both gmax v 1.01 and gmax v 1.02, neither would work. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. It says that it would Email me but it never does. I've tried many times. Even if I do get gmax successfully registered and working, I still need to learn how to use gmax itself. Once I get a hang of THAT, I would need to read tutorials on HEK. Something else that I needed was like Paintshop or Photoshop. I wasn't really sure what it said. So there are some questions:

1. How do I register gmax/Why isn't gmax registering?
2. Do I need Photoshop AND paintshop?
3. What is the difference netween these?
4. Is there any free trial for either of those?

So, I need CHIMP also? You sure do need a lot of programs. . .

1. How do I register gmax/Why isn't gmax registering?

Make absolutely sure that the email address and other registration info is spelled correctly. I work for a company that, among other things, does order fulfillment and the number one reason that people's registrations don't go through is misentry of information. You'd be surprised how many people send in registration forms (and order forms!) with typos.

Oh, and you're probably better off just trying to register gmax 1.2... it's the latest version, and there's a chance that trying to register multiple copies of different versions might get kicked out.

2. Do I need Photoshop AND paintshop?
No, either one will do.

3. What is the difference netween these?
Paintshop Pro is more affordable and will do all of what the typical home user or amateur webmaster will need. If you want to bat in the big leagues, however, Photoshop is probably the better choice as it has more advanced editing and composition tools.

Speaking only for myself, I use Paintshop Pro 7 for gmax, my web sites, and for my digital photography and find it's very handy.

4. Is there any free trial for either of those?
Yes, or at least there were when I last checked. See http://www.jasc.com for Paintshop Pro and http://www.adobe.com for Photoshop.

So, I need CHIMP also? You sure do need a lot of programs. . .
CHIMP is a plugin for gmax... it's not a separate program. You can just throw it into the gmax scripts folder and use it like it was part of gmax from the start.
