This is something that I noticed about the community forum. Just about every other topic is a locked topic, and it is usually for being off topic.

These topics are really spamming the community forum, but this is the only solution I can think of.
Do you think it would be fair to give the off-topic posters a short ban on the first attempt.

No, I don't think that's necessary. A warning is sufficient. Banning wouldn't do anything but keep that specific user from doing it again, and a warning will easily fill that purpose. Banning won't make an example, because most of the people who make off-topic posts are either new or occasional posters, so they wouldn't recognize people were being banned for this.

I think that as long as there is a "move thread " feature they should use it and not hand out warnings, especially not to those who just replied on topic. Threads that are clearly violating the rules or arent right for any of the forums should be locked and the OP warned/blacklisted.

On a case by case basis, the mods deal with those as they see fit. If you guys haven't noticed, this site has many specific rules and punishments, but there's also a lot of other 'rules' that the mods have to use their best judgment on deciding the punishment.

I'm almost positive off-topic threads always result in a warning, at least.

Moderating, the way I see it, isn't just matching A to B, it's very much a constantly changing environment for a constantly changing thing. ;) Some rules are solid and set in stone as to what the punishments are, many are not so much. That's why B.net has the most trusting guys moderating it.

Report it as spam and move on. =)
Don't help it and reply because sometimes the mods ban repliers.

A couple of things to remember.

There is no way, nothing, that makes text on a screen an "emergency that must be dealt with this second". I am sorry, I am sure that you feel that this is so, but it is not.

Let's try looking at this calmly, shall we?

First off, the person is trolling. Attempting to get attention, by breaking rules, making controversy, injecting questionable humor and fanning flames. Can we agree on that? Made by an account with a name that is synonymous with Weasel Dick that is less than a week old. Come on, who can't spot that this is a troll?

So, was this reported? I've just signed on, not checked my PM's or the spam-queue yet, but am willing to bet that this is at the top of the list.

If any member reported it had then LEFT IT ALONE, then what would have happened? We would have a thread consisting of the OP trolling and anyone who was willing to take part in the thread and feed the (apparent) troll. With few or no replies, it would be off of page one and still going to get attention when a ninja got to it.

Instead, what do we have? A thread in this forum that draws attention to the troll and his efforts. Congratulations, you have made their efforts more fruitful and brought them joy and rewards. How many people who clucked their tongues at that thread actually clicked on reply? Well, they shouldn't have.

Members now have a wonderful tool in their personal arsenal. That tool's effectiveness is increased immensely when they use it combined with silence.

Unfortunately, because this is a text based medium, just like trolls, too many members think that silence is nothing. Well it isn't.

Now that I have responded to what I think is a larger problem (the idea that threads like this help), I can go take care of this minor incident.

I hope this helps in some way.
