The Problem

You've heard about it, you've seen it. The underground is slowly becoming the Halo 3 Forum's backyard; all the stupid questions and useless threads are going directly to The Underground.

The question would be: Why? My guess is that when people get their off-topic or useless threads locked from the Halo 3 forum they browse through the Community section and see this:

Community Home
Halo 3 Forum
Halo 3 Files Forum
Optimatch Playlist Discussion

And when they realize that none of these forums have anything to do with their thread they see this: Bungie General Forum; and so their little brain thinks - "Oh, this is a general forum, maybe I can ask about anything here!" - and so they post a new topic.

My Proposal

Two things could be done to avoid this. The forum's name could be changed to something like The Old-School Forum or anything that doesn't include the word general or the forum could be moved from the Main Public Forums to the Other Public Forums section.

This would let the moderators moderate the other forums and not worry too much about this particular forum and it would also help people who just want to discuss about old Bungie's games and similar topics.

I guess people don't see that sticky that tells you to posti n the Halo 3 thread if you have a question.

Solution for you: Report as Spam. It's what Achronos or any mod would tell you.

Yes, we can report these threads but as soon as one gets deleted another one appears and so on. This will happen for the next 6 months for sure.

Or.. they can name it The Underground again.

The forum isn't necessarily about Bungie's "Old Skool" games, it's about Bungie in general from old games, Bungie studios, future games, ect.

I never stated that The Underground was an old-school games forum only, it was just some sort of example. :)

It will always happen no matter what. Once the mods see the thread they will do what they see fit to do. It's mostly moved to the right place.

I thought this was another thread about deleting the Underground. I was gonna come in here and....

anyways, here's the way I see it:

1) Change the name, people will still post off-topic things in there. That the way it was when it was named "The Underground," that's the way it is now. When I first joined this site, I didn't know what was what, but I read the rules and figured out that the Underground was for old-skool Bungie stuff (and books/possible games).

2) Don't change the name and tell people to read the rules.

3) Change the name and people won't post crap in there.

I say option 1 is most likely. People want attention, plain and simple. It doesn't matter what name it changes to, people will still post their off-topic crap in there about recon.

I agree with everyone; a name change won't do a damn thing. All you can do is report the thread, answer any questions, then leave it alone. It's what happens when a companies main audience is young teenagers to young adults; they don't read the rules, and quiet frankly, don't care about the rules. Other than the select few of course.

Basically, I everything what Duardo said.

Duardo, you know that most of the new-comers don't ever read the rules/stickys.

Quite true. :(

They should....hopefully Achronos and the web team are working up something spiffy.

Someone wants attention.
See what I mean. This confirms my thoughts. It doesn't matter how long you've been here; he's been here for almost a year. He should know not to post that crap in here, yet he does because he wants attention.

Well as a new member, I have no idea how "The Underground" used to be. From my inference from these posts, it must have been some forum of eternal greatness. Wow, I sound so much like a role player...

my first time in here.ive been looking for ranked btb information and can find nothing current.so ill vent here.i just finished a game where i was once again teamed up with little jonny snot nose and his 3 guests who know nothing about the game other than pulling the trigger and throwing grenades.im so ticked off its beyond funny.i enjoyed halo2 and love halo3 but feel very frustrated at the current btb situation.ive never felt angry enough to throw my controller until tonight.in my opinion if you pay the amount of money it takes to play online, you shouldnt be getting upset because rugrats on your own team are throwing grenades at you.if anyone from bungie happens to read this, heres my advice.take your current playlist and throw it all in the garbage, start over with big team battle ranked and unranked and then split those up into skirmish and slayer, problem solved.the only reason i play halo anymore is because of big team battle.when two teams of 16 equally skilled players engage in a game, its awesome and chaotic.those are the games that are worth the money i pay.and these days theyre getting fewer.why bungie, why must i share my big team experience with little jonny no skill.ranked btb please!!!!!!!!!

The problem is not just in the Underground though, it is here also. Last weekend almost every other thread here was moved or locked. Use the spam button, move on, and hope for the best. There really is not much else that can be done, unless there is a way to force people to read rules before posting.

Maybe the Underground should just be a chapter for old school fans to post in and host tournaments, etc...etc...? The Underground to me seems like the forum at the top of the page where every idiot goes because they can't make a few extra clicks.

This is exactly what I'm trying to say.

Deleting the Underground from the Main Public Forums would help a lot, I am pretty sure of this.

Well you also have to kind of think... regardless of what forum was listed at the top... would it still receive the same nonsense/no briner posts that the Underground is typically flooded with?

I mean it's great people want to talk Halo and Halo movie and other stuff. But half this stuff isn't about Bungie or the older games... the community for those games are rather reclusive at best or tend to shy away from Bungie.net... I loved the Underground back in the day but it has crashed and burned IMO.

Well, you do have a point. If we take in consideration that the real users of the Underground have their own gathering places then, and only then, the Underground could be left just the way it is right now.

I guess this won't go anywhere else. If no one has anything else to add, this should be closed.

The same thing happened in the months after Halo 2 was released; it was the main reason I decided to start being a kind of 'forum cop', because the amount of Halo 2 related topics in the Underground was annoying, when all I wanted to talk about was Myth and Marathon.

After Halo 3 dies down a little more, the topics will slow and then people will start reliving Marathon and Myth, and asking questions, and being good little Underground users.

Aye, I think we would all like to help reduce the spam, it gets on my nerves. Report as Spam isn't as fun as Unleash Ninjas :-(

I am a Floodian

I agree about renaming the forum so that someone has to actually read the rules to understand what to post. Heck, I think that's how it should be in every forum.

Also, for perhaps a prevention of future infractions. When someone visits a forum for the first time they should be asked if they want to go through a tutorial or something like that explaining how the forum works. Or perhaps when they should go through one when they first sign up for a Bungie.net account.

Solution for you: Report as Spam. It's what Achronos or any mod would tell you.

Pfft. >_> Forum cop.
<_<

Seriously though, Coffey is correct. Report as spam, don't worry about it. I'm really not sure how (even after the web team moved Halo 3 Forum to the near top of the list) people still manage to post in the wrong forum.

I still propose a 'form' or 'agreement' you have to checkmark and say "I agree" every time you post a new topic. This would be unique for EACH forum and clearly state what discussion the particular forum you're about to post in is for. Then, if a user still manages to post off-topic, they can have a more severe punishment (blacklisting) that they agreed to. It could also make a few users go "Oh, whoops." and find the correct forum before posting.

If the "I agree to the Terms and conditions" tick box has taught me anything it is that a lot of people don't read tick boxes hence this probably wouldn't work . . .

I have no doubt that TGP is right. In the meantime I say smite all those that wish to defile the Underground with their spam an off-topic posts. Sometimes rules have to be learned the hard way, because that's they only way some people will learn them.

Add a pseudo link at the top of the the list so people are required to move their mouse to actually decide and choose which link to click >_>

We don't need more effective descriptions, rules, gestures, whatever. We need more effective members that can follow rules and post accordingly. I do not meet those requirements, we're all imperfect in our posting - forums, rules, thread appropriateness, etc. The only advice I can offer in this situation is to act according to the rules and be nice. Setting an example for new users and those who are thick headed will hopefully result in training them to be nice forum going people. If not we can always hand them to the moderators, because they're very much like the Jackals in the Covenant prison where the Arbiter is being dragged into the Hall of the Arbiters - needless to say they're vicious.
