No recon, you are pretty close, but I don't want my friends list, I just want my own status, that way, say for instance my clan members come to our website, start surfing our forums and see....oh hey, BlackOps is on, I think I'll hop on too...that's all I want.
I don't think that it needs your passport information to do that, on the server side it simply queries your status, it polls your XBL account, you are either online, or you aren't. The querie would simply return a 1 or a 0. The reason the .net passport works for this is because its owned by microsoft, which ties into your XBL account in the first place.
Here is some evidence as to why I don't think its necessary to have your login information. If I have AIM, then you cannot see my friends list, nor will you ever. Nor do you need my login information to have my online status made public and posted on a website...there are several sites, as well as AOL provides, online status indicators for several AIM clients. Same with the Xfire mini profile, it tells you if I am online or not, and what game I am playing, all without using any of my credentials.
Chris, of course I have heard of privacy, and if you don't want to use it, then by all means don't. Not to mention that you can change your online status in the game so as to maintain that privacy you are so concerned about, even if you had this indicator.
