How about a remote status indicator? Like when I go to my friends list here at the site, it has their name and then what game they are currently playing or offline, what about making a small javascript or flash file or whatever, that Halo players could put in their sigs here and on other sites that would give their online XBL status?

...If I'm understanding you correctly, you want Bungie to create some Javascript so that people can put it in their signatures, on other sites, to show whether they're on Xbox Live or not?

User Access to Xbox Live status is restricted, I believe. Unless they're on your friends list, you cannot see their status, period.

I don't think it could be done.

Yup

Can't be done is a pretty bold statement. The infrasctructure is already in place since I can see peoples' status online that are already in my friends list. It wouldnt' take much to write a javascript to poll your account status and return a game name.

I don't think it can't be done, but I don't think it should be done.

I wouldn't want to advertise all my friends' names and statuses to the world either! For crying out loud, ever heard of privacy?

No recon, you are pretty close, but I don't want my friends list, I just want my own status, that way, say for instance my clan members come to our website, start surfing our forums and see....oh hey, BlackOps is on, I think I'll hop on too...that's all I want.

I don't think that it needs your passport information to do that, on the server side it simply queries your status, it polls your XBL account, you are either online, or you aren't. The querie would simply return a 1 or a 0. The reason the .net passport works for this is because its owned by microsoft, which ties into your XBL account in the first place.

Here is some evidence as to why I don't think its necessary to have your login information. If I have AIM, then you cannot see my friends list, nor will you ever. Nor do you need my login information to have my online status made public and posted on a website...there are several sites, as well as AOL provides, online status indicators for several AIM clients. Same with the Xfire mini profile, it tells you if I am online or not, and what game I am playing, all without using any of my credentials.

Chris, of course I have heard of privacy, and if you don't want to use it, then by all means don't. Not to mention that you can change your online status in the game so as to maintain that privacy you are so concerned about, even if you had this indicator.

Well, B.net is retrieving your online information from the Xbox Live servers, through secure Passport Authentication. It's a little more complicated to get at this data then a simple server query, and because of the way Gamertags have to be linked, I'd think the only secure way would be for your site to have Passport software on the servers.

Nope, can't happen. Presence information like what you suggest is extremely restricted for privacy reasons. The only people who can see your status are yourself and people on your friends list. Furthermore, the Passport is significant in that it allows us to discover (with authority/certainity) what gamertag you are. And on top of that, access to Xbox Live services is VERY restricted.

Sorry.
