I was talking to one of my friends (an avid Halo 3/Halo 2 player) a couple days ago. I asked him if he had ever played Halo Combat Evolved. He replied, "No, I've never played the first Halo." Immediately I started to think, "What in the world! How could you not play Halo:CE? It's a classic, and not to mention one of the best games of all time." I started to ask him if he knew anything about the story, which he replied no to pretty much everyone.

After this conversation, I started to wonder how many Halo 2/3 players have never played Halo:CE. To me, it's almost unthinkable. It's like missing the whole beginning of the storyline, just imagine the number of holes in the plot! And what of all the missing fun of the multiplayer side of Halo:CE? I remember almost the entire summer of 2002 me and my buddies (the guy I mentioned before was not there, of course) played CTF on Sidewinder and Blood Gulch, with many fun times and great memories. My friends who haven't played Halo:CE don't understand why I hate 343 Guilty Spark and why I was so glad to kill him in Halo 3, why I think equipment is un - Halo like, and why I think Halo:CE is better than Halo 3. Yes, some people will say that I feel this way because Halo:CE is nostalgic, but, who cares. I should end my rant now.

My question to you is, do any of you feel the same?

Halo 2 was the first game in the series I ever played, but I eventually played the first game and learned to appreciate it more than the other games.

I don't understand how you can play Halo 2 or Halo 3 and get what's going on in the story line at all, because quite frankly Halo 3 would be a complete mess to those who never played the first two games; same goes with Halo 2, although at a lesser extent. If you play a trilogy, why don't you start from the beginning?

Unfortunately, the game is now too old for most people to pick it up for the first time and appreciate it. But I certainly agree.

What the poster above me says is spot on - halo 3 is a complete mess if you don't know what's going on.

Yes, the game is pretty old now. But, being able to download Halo:CE over Xbox Live may bring more people to it. Sadly, Bungie will probably never give online capability to Halo:CE, which may turn people away.

I do not have a 360, so I have always played CE & 2, but I definately would get him into CE. It lacks the MM and Online play that alot of 2 and 3 players live for (I have never done either, I am campaign only) but if your friend likes campaign play as much, or more than, going live or Multiplayer then he should love the campaign aspects. CE is alot more in your face combat, with less medium and long distance battles. 2 is alot of medium and long distance combat, which requires a different approach to the gameplay at times, but to me is less satisfying. There is the lack of the skulls, and the vehicle combat is not as varied, those can be a bummer for someone used to those aspects of the game. But the fact that you can approach the same battle in so many different ways keeps CE from getting stale. In 2 (and I would assume 3 as well) if you vary from the one or two strategies that work to get you through alive (on Legendary of course) then typically the battles become unwinnable and you just get to keep enjoying the same checkpoint! I like to go all melee, or all PP, or all Magnum, or all grenade stick, etc... You do not have that kind of flexibility while playing 2.

Age of the game affects only how the game looks on the screen compared to the graphics that 2 and 3 offer. Personally I think that CE is much more the visual treat than 2 is. Things are closer, bigger, badder and more personal in CE than in 2. The landscapes are more impressive in my opinion, you just cant explore them as much as you can in 2 with Sputnik on.

Overall, I enjoy playing CE more than 2, and I imagine your freind might as well!

Well said, womyfts. I may just go out and go buy some Microsoft points so he can go out and try it himself. Or I can let him borrow my copy for a bit.

I have come across a lot of people like this... It's really sad...

Halo: CE is one of those games you just must play...

To have people who have never played it think they 'know' Halo....

Ah well.
