Subject: Halo 1 PC Exception Notice

What's up? I'm Anthony, from Maryland. I play a lot of video games, too many. Enjoying the Halo Reach Beat right now. Also Halo was kind of my life from the age of 11-14.

I recently purchased Halo 1 for the PC because my 360 had to be sent in for repairs and at first it worked fine, then I went and bought a graphics card so i could play multiplayer and when I put the game in a box pops up that says Exception ! then another box pops up and says Halo has encountered a problem and need to close. I've tried evryhting form uninstalling the game and the graphics card and reinstalling it. Even after I completely got rid of the graphics card I still get the message. If anyone can help please do, Thanks.

Delete your program files/Microsoft Games/Halo folder. Exception means there is a problem with one of the game files, usually a map. Uninstalling sometimes won't delete all the files, and reinstalling sometimes won't overwrite. So manually delete, then reinstall, and see what happens.

Also, what's the new graphics card/drivers for it, and what are your other specs?

Thanks, I will try this, also I got rid of the graphics card because I thought that maybe it was interfering with the game or something and I got rid of all the extra folders and components that came with it.

Yes, I am a hypocrite, and I'm sorry. I really do mean well, but I'm not running on all cylinders.

Everytime someone buys a copy of Halo 2 Vista, a puppy dies.

Probably using video chip that's included on the motherboard.

*facepalm*

That is false. True in some cases, but mostly falses.

Do not listen to this man's advice. Halo will not launch an exception on startup. If one of the "game files" are messed up, that's from tinkering with Halo .maps files, and it will crash when you try to launch the map. If the game's core files were corrupted, you wouldn't fix it by just deleted the folder. That's silly. Just re-install (or "repair") the game.

Do you by chance have anti-aliasing enabled for your graphics card? If so, go to your ATI or Nvida Control Panel, and turn off anti-aliasing. Halo has a notorious reputation for crashing on startup when anti-aliasing is enabled. Find a way to turn it off. I've had that problem myself, and many, many others have as well.

EDIT: Yes, I'd suggest you find what brand and model your graphics card is, find the official website, and download the latest drivers for it. Also make sure your computer supports Halo's minimum specs.

And why would you remove your graphics card? You know that magical little port you plug your monitor in to? Yeah, that's your graphics card right behind that. And besides, Halo needs your graphics card. I mean, how would it draw itself without one? =X

Also, if you don't even have a GFX card, but have a chipset on your mobo to replace it, Halo won't run on your computer. That falls under the category of not having the proper graphics card (or even one at all), but I doubt that's the case.

If you can run other games just find on your PC, then your GFX card is fine. Just turn off anti-aliasing; that should fix it.

Bapabooie, I take it you've never modded before? Exceptions occur on STARTUP when there is a map error or usually a difference in filesize. Maps are loaded into the game when the game starts. That's why custom edition takes forever when there are multiple maps. Trust me, I modded halo for a long time before there was custom edition that allowed such differences in file size.

but anyway, yes it seems to be a graphics card/driver issue.

That's for intermittent .map problems, silly. I've had my game crash plenty of times right after I start the map, or do a certain thing on the map if I didn't mod correctly or messed up somewhere along the line. Plus, I'm talking about Halo PC, not Halo Custom Edition. I believe Halo: Custom Edition is the one that runs a checksum to make sure all the maps are alright during startup. I was talking about Halo PC.

Never.. modded... Halo? You've got to be kidding ;] Been making mods for years, and I've made a few maps myself =] Worked on scenery files, and even a vehicle or two (which didn't work out very well.. at all). Even right now, I've been working on a Halo map editor of my own (C++) as well. I pretty know the structure of a .map file inside-friggen' out. I pretty much do all my modding in hex-editing now =]

OK, I feel greasy for talking like that. But yes, I am a modder, and I've been modding for years. Just thought I'd point that out.

Now if only H2V wasn't such an ass...

Of course, why would using some crappy chip(s) on your mobo be any better than having a card entirely dedicated to that stuff?

It may just be my science and geography homework talking....But did anyone laugh at that....Even just a little? =S

With that out of the way, from my limited expierence from using/seeing/trying to make mods, the "Exception!" error is usually something to do with your maps. I guess this may come with expierence, but when one game doesn't work while all the others do, removing the graphics card isn't going to be the best solution....
However! I have to keep typing to avoid spilling my mind into where the hell a squiggly line, and what lake/land form it may be! And I may actually have a solution. What you may want to do is find the drivers for your chipset/ graphics card. This can be easily done (google is your new wife...Or er....Husband?)
First: find the name of your graphics card.

-Goto; START
-'run'
-type into the box 'dxdiag' without the quotes.
-Allow it to load, and click yes/no to whatever comes up. It doesn't matter.
-Goto the 'Display' tab at the top of the new window that came up.
Then type to us what it says under "name" ,"Chip type", and Approx. total Memory.
for instance; mine would be:
NAME - NVIDIA Geforce 8500 GT
CHIP TYPE - Geforce 8500 GT
APPROX. TOTAL MEMORY - 512.0 MB

Now, you can do this without our help! Go onto the interwebs, and go to google. Google search your name of your graphics card and add in 'drivers' So mine would be: "Nvidia Geforce 8500 GT drivers .
Goto the website that looks the most official, and which offers a download for the drivers. If you manage to find the download, open and let these drivers run. Try running Halo again.
If it doesn't work still , then at least you updated your graphics card! High Five!

BTW: when you said you whipped out your graphics card, are you sure you took out your graphics card? Say...Can you still listen to music on that comp? :P

Yeah. From what I know, maps can crush randomly during runtime if you mod it incorrectly, because the problem isn't always intermittent. The map will load, but you did something wrong, and you could do something to make it crash.

Or, it'll just crash when you load the map all together.

Halo 1 PC doesn't make sure the maps are OK when the game is loading, Halo Custom Edition is the one that does a checksumduring startup, and that's what causing the long loading time sometimes.
