To get nice, smooth and shiny graphics on Halo, does it actually matter what type 128mb video card I get? I want to get a new one but i dont have much money. So if i got one for 25 pounds instead of 100 how much of a difference will it make? Thnx.

Not all 128mb cards work... I know it's old now, but I used to have an ATi Rage Pro (128mb) and Halo had "serious issues" with it and wouldn't start at all...

It is always best to go for the best you can afford, and maybe waiting another couple of weeks to get a bit of extra money is no bad thing... I would reccommend that you buy AT LEAST an Nvidia FX5200 128mb. You can pick these up for around £30-£40 now.

I can't comment on the ATi series... I don't know ANYTHING about them. Somebody else should be able to help you if you are interested in those...

Hope this helps.

Heyyo,

When it comes to videocards, ram doesn't mean much, which's why whenever I see videocards saying how much ram it has innit as an advertisement I shake my head cause they know not how to advertise... RAM only stores the files the videocard uses for models n' junk, so 128MB is enough ram for pretty much all games out there... BUT, what really matters is the chipset behind it. For ATI I suggest a ATI Radeon 9600 PRO, yeah, the FX5200 should be able to do it, but really slowly, and new games will suffer from a constant low framerate... So for Nvidia I suggest a minimum of a FX5700.

Description of RAM, video cards, and stuff

The Mard is right on. Ram really doesn't mean much. It's the processor/chipset the card has, as well as its interface with your motherboard. Don't follow the link's info religiously. It'll just give you an idea of what a 'good' video card is.

The Radeon 9800 Pro will run Halo well, and will run future games decently, although it is a bit out of your range. The Radeon 9600 series, especially XT, is great, one of the best values in my opinion.

Not everything with 128 mb will work.

I bought the GeForce Fx5700 (I think) with 256 mb ram, and it runs pretty crappy. I have to run it at 800x600 to get a decent frame rate. Of course, I bought it before I read Davis's description.

I'm thinking of returning it, and getting the Radeon 9600XT. But, should I bother to pay the extra $20 and get the 256 mb of ram?

Also, to the thread starter, are you buying with newegg? They have some of the best prices I've seen, and great shipping.

There won't be a huge performance gap, but the 256 MB version does a tad better, especially when you use antialiasing. The thing is, the 9600XT was so damn advanced for its time, it still rocks. Most cards today, even the best ones have less than 550 MHz of core speed - the 9600XT has 500MHz...and it's 3 friggen years old!

If you want a slight performance boost, go ahead. It will make antialiasing and a few other effects better, like antisotropic filtering, but as far as resolution and effects, not much will change. If your gith on cash, then don't, but otherwise it could be a fair investment.

The Radeon 9600 series is the best card in its price range, get a 9600 pro or xt. NEVER EVER GET A SE CARD.
