I've always wondered why Bungie hasn't gone back to Halo: CE and coded it for Live.

How long would it take them to simply take all the same textures, geometries, animations, weapons etc. from Halo: CE and just code it for Live?

I mean considering Halo 2 took four years to make and Halo 3 took 3, how much of that time was devoted to making it work on Live?

I'd personally stop playing Halo 3 and fork up forty or fifty bucks for it without thinking.

I also remember Achronos responding to one of these thread with something about how long it would take.
But honestly, would it really take more than a few months for a game that is now six years old?

Any thoughts?

Yes. It's not as simple as dragging and dropping crap into once place, coding it to making it Live capable, then releasing it.

If you're so desperate for a Halo 1 that can do multiplayer that you'll shell out 40-50 dollars, try the PC Halos, or make a full conversion.

To play or not to play....

Heck I bet they could port the Halo custom edition over to live though. That seems easy enough. Though alas I dream a dream.

I might even be tempted to shell out some $$$ for it too. Just cause it would be so cooooolll.

Too. Freaking. Long. Okay, perhaps not years, but I don't think Bungie or Microsoft would be willing to do it in the very near future.

Not even! Halo PC nowadays at most costs just $20.

They have it for live, it's called Halo PC.

It would be a lot of work to make Halo live compatable. Coding is not simple business, as one little error can cause a fatal crash. It just wouldn't be worth doing.

Wrong, wrong, wrong, dude. Halo PC is no substitute for a true Xbox Live-enabled online multiplayer on the Xbox. They're two different games.

it is different, that's true, but Halo PC is probably the best we are going to get.

if they had a MM system, that would be pretty damn awesome, but i don't see bungie making Halo 1 live compatable any time in the near or distant future.

Oh, I wasn't saying it cost that much, just that if he was willing to spend that much money just for multiplayer H1, that there were less costly alternatives readily available.

Ideally they would only have to update the network code, but in reality, a lot of the game relies heavily on the network code. That code would also have to be rewritten/tweaked. It would require a lot of writing new code and tweaking existing code to make it work right. By the time it was finished, it could (from a code stand point) be a a very different game. It could very well play quite differently. It would depend on how much they changed. Halo PC didn't seem to be changed as much, but the network code still seems less than optimal.

Since it's just coding the game, it would require fewer man hours, but normally, during game development, different teams are working simultaneously. So, actual development time would still probably be pretty significant. It would be less time than an entirely new game, but it would still take awhile. While Halo PC isn't bad, it's probably not the quality of game they would want to produce. I would personally be fairly satisfied with a 360 port of Halo PC, but I don't think it would be up to Bungie standards. I guess it's ultimately up to Microsoft anyway, but I doubt they're even willing to do that, at this point.

I've played Halo:CE on XBC, but really, its not enough.

I've played Halo: PC but you can't very well use a Duke on you're PC.

Even then, people mod Halo: PC like no other.

And lastly, I wouldn't want a Matchmaking system or any of the extras we have in H2 and H3.

Just a basic, bare bones game finder that lists the current people online and what they are playing would be awesome.

I agree with you on the game finder, I also played on XBC, all the time. In fact one year we had a Lan like every year, we had a friend join us through XBC being he couldnt be here for the Lan. I actually logged on to XBC to see if any Halo CE games were up and nothing. Those days, and maps were so much fun. It would be cool to have those maps but it still wouldn't be the same with what they have done to the weapons now. The pistol for example is now worthless, might as well just get rid of it.
Hey if anyone wants to play Halo CE on XBC get in touch with me and lets get it back going agian. People would complain about Lag But I could always host games with 10 people and they would say I was the best Host, of course most of us have higher better speeds now than we did then so it should be even better.
For those who dont know what XBC is , it is XBConnect. Go www.XBConnect.com and read up on it and download what you need to system link you console.

I think Halo 2 was made in a year. Not four, that's for sure.
But I don't think it would be hard.

It was announced, with screenshots, in August 2002. It was released in Novemember 2004. That's over two years there. It was probably around 3 years, since that's the time between Halo: CE and Halo 2.
