So I was hanging with some of my old high school friends recently and we were talking about the good old days of LAN parties almost every weekend and not being burdened with responsibility and an interesting comment got brought up. One of my friends said, "in my opinion xbox live ruined halo." At first I said no that's impossible, but then he explained himself and I had to really think. He had a couple of reasons for saying this.
First he said that halo has become too serious. Back in the day of halo 1 I remember playing a circuit of rumble pits on every halo 1 level, slayer pro on most, rockets on prisoner, and snipers on big levels. Then when we got back to battle creek we'd pick teams based on the rank that we got in the match. Teams were picked for the greatest multiplayer event of them all: 3 score, touch return, flag at home to score, all vehicle CTF on blood gulch or sidewinder with pistol and AR start. Man did we love this, its the reason we all converted to the xbox from either nintendo or playstation.
But now its not like that. I can't remember the last time I got together with my friends for a LAN party. Sure we all have live, but often times some of our friends with higher ranks don't want to play games like team slayer for fear that they will delevel. That's pretty sad, people don't play games with their friends for fear that they will lose a number that only matters in cyberspace for one game. Video games are about fun, and multiplayer is about having fun with friends. Sure everyone wants to be as good as possible, but it should never get to the point where people abandon one another for their dreams of going pro or some crap like that. Now halo seems to be more about competition than it is fun.
Saying a LAN party and xbox live are the same thing is kind of like saying that going to a bar and going to a chat room are the same thing. They aren't. There's something about seeing people face to face that makes things be more fun than the event by itself. I like hanging with friends better than playing video games, when I can do both that's even better. Now I know that I can LAN whenever I want, in theory, but it is much harder to get one together than it used to be. I mean why would someone logically decide to unplug they're tv and xbox and drive half an hour to play the same game they could by turning the xbox on and clicking multiplayer? That's the thing LAN parties aren't logical. They take transportation, time, and a lot of other sacrifices. But when you love halo multiplayer and your only choice is to sacrifice and have a LAN or be stuck making speed runs of assault on the control room on legendary by yourself you more often than not will choose the LAN. Without the LAN halo loses a crucial part of its existence. Things like halo's LAN were a definitive mark against computer gaming. Friends from wherever packed into someone's basement, 4 people sitting on one bed playing splitscreen on a 19 inch tv. It was hardcore, it was a community, but so many aren't willing to sacrifice and therefore they rarely happen anymore.
I'm not going to say that xbox live ruined halo like my friend, but it sure hurt it for the worse. What's the community's opinion?
